Vedic Origin of Organic Farming | In Conversation with Vandana Shiva

  • A British scientist was sent to India 100 years ago to teach advanced agriculture. After studying Indian farming, he wrote a book explaining that the knowledge of Indian farmers was far more advanced than in Europe. Indian methods of organic farming thus reached Britain where an institute was set up. They called it the INDORE METHOD of farming. Later on, a top American scientist visited Britain to learn this technique and established the most prestigious agriculture institute in the USA for research on organic technologies. Now, many foolish Indians think we are learning organic farming from the West.

Do you think the West should acknowledge Vedic origins of the modern field Agroecology? Why do you think they have removed references to India's knowledge of organic farming? Let us know in the comment section below.

We should patent our Vedic sources to prevent issues in future. Or educate and broadcast our knowledge so they cannot patent it or rebrand it. First step should be to get our scriptures in their libraries to avoid this confusion

I suppose that they don't want to acknowledge that they have learnt it from Bhartiya culture. This may be because if they acknowledge it would at some stage be feather in the cap of Bhartiyata. They don't want us to be aware of our contributions to the world and always hold western culture in high regards. Like this, we may deny our own culture at some stage and take up their values. The case is similar with yoga, our spiritual methods, our texts, mathematics and many more. They are silently attacking out culture and most of us are still in denial mode. Thanks Rajiv sir.

As you say...they probably don't want to acknowledge the fact that we and our culture are/is superior to them in every field... except perhaps racism 🙃.
Keep up the good work Sir.... much appreciated 👍🙏🙏🙏

I completely agree with you sir.. But if we try to do so, they will create lot of roadblocks on the path. But with a strong vision and will, we can make them acknowledge

Definitely the West should acknowledge it. Its so annoying they are doing this to every single Vedic system of knowledge.
Also all of this knowledge must become part of our education system. Prasar Bharati must broadcast such knowledge also.

This is actually a fine and clear example of so-called Western invention. It confirms my hunch that the Library at Alexandria and the Baghdad centre of learning were really Translation centres, as were Toledo and Cordoba, culling original knowledge from the Eastern manuscripts and travellers' stories. The European enlightenment did not happen suddenly in a vacuum!

I can’t say I’m surprised to hear that. That’s what many Western people and corporations have been doing, they borrow from our ancient culture and then tweak it a bit with scientific explanations and re-brand it as their own genuine inventions. And then they parent it or try to patent it. A variety of basmati rice, turmeric, yoga comes to mind. One of the reasons this has been allowed is that we Indians lack self esteem and pride in our culture and traditions and will only follow it when approved by Western society. We’ve known the antiseptic and anti inflammatory properties of turmeric for thousand of years which scientists are discovering now. I hope indian scientists work on them and back this up with scientific explanations and I also hope any patent which tries to own an Indian innovation gets challenged

🙏🏼🙏🏽 10 years ago, I had an argument with a western friend I met at a popular Ashram. My locus for Organics, Veganism, Eco-friendliness, Animal rights etc. was always Vedic. I did not have the proper means to prove it. My friends response was "no one can claim" they invented Organic farming. However it is clear, that "Krishi Sutra" is a type of Shaastra. It is not an accidental discovery; but carefully avoids "Intrusive, explotation of the Soil". Also, regardless of what farming knowledge existed anywhere in the world; the fact is that Howard, and Rodale learnt it from Indian Farmers who were rooted in Vedic practices. They did not learn it from China, or some shaman. They learnt it from India!! Kudos to Dr. Vandana Shiva for expounding this in the manner only she can. Koti pranams to Shri Rajiv ji; who is a Rishi of our times.

Tamil Nadu is called "vedam Niraintha Tamizhnaadu'. Land thats filled with Vedas". Raja Raja Chola built an empire on the back of vedic farming techniques as he was a patron of the vedic scholars. He settled brahmins in villages he granted them.Aquaponics or Fish Pond Fish tank irrigated agriculture was Cholas secret. Angor Wat in Cambodia is the best example. It was built by Vijaya Raja Chozha. Fish was in their flags and government seals. The world Heritahe centre Temple for Fish Eyed Godess Meenakshi was built by chozhas. Chozhas used this agro Surplos Value to run their Global Trade. They were best examples of Vedic Prosperity.Toda the Chozhas are blacked out necause of their Vedic Patronage. Todays Tamils wallow in Myths of Aryan and Dravidan unlike Chozhas who celebrated the vedic knowledge and Havans that bring rains due to Carbon emissions. The ancient Vedic Tamizh Naadu was rich while todays Tamil Nadu has become Taliban Nadu rotting in corruption and poverty going behind Marxists and Missionaries. This is a very time;ly video byu7 Rajiv Malhotra that will help revive Vedic Farming..

"In June 2014, Indian and international media reported that Navdanya and Vandana Shiva were named in a leaked, classified report by India's Intelligence Bureau (IB), which was prepared for the Indian Prime Minister's Office.[47]
The leaked IB report raises concerns over the foreign-funding of Indian NGOs whose campaigning activities, the report claims, are hampering India's growth and development. In its report, the IB said that Indian NGOs, including Navdanya, receive money from foreign donors under the 'charitable garb' of campaigning for human rights or women's equality, but instead use the money for nefarious purposes. "These foreign donors lead local NGOs to provide field reports which are used to build a record against India and serve as tools for the strategic foreign policy interests of the Western governments," the IB report states.[48]
Investigative journalist Michael Specter, in an article in The New Yorker on 25 August 2014 entitled "Seeds of Doubt",[10] raised concerns over a number of Shiva's claims regarding GMOs and some of her campaigning methods. He wrote: "Shiva's absolutism about G.M.O.s can lead her in strange directions. In 1999, ten thousand people were killed and millions were left homeless when a cyclone hit India's eastern coastal state of Orissa. When the U.S. government dispatched grain and soy to help feed the desperate victims, Shiva held a news conference in New Delhi and said that the donation was proof that "the United States has been using the Orissa victims as guinea pigs" for genetically-engineered products, although she made no mention about that those same products are approved and consumed in the United States. She also wrote to the international relief agency Oxfam to say that she hoped it wasn't planning to send genetically modified foods to feed the starving survivors."[10]
Cases of plagiarism have been pointed out against Vandana Shiva. Birendra Nayak has published on her plagiarism involving copying verbatim from a 1996 article in Voice Gopalpur in her 1998 book Stronger than Steel.[51] Several paragraphs of an article by S Faizi on the Plachimada/Coca-Cola issue published in The Statesman in 2015 were plagiarized by Vandana Shiva in an article she published a year later.[52]

Journalist Keith Kloor, in an article published in Discover on 23 October 2014 entitled "The Rich Allure of a Peasant Champion", revealed that Shiva charges US$40,000 per speaking lecture, plus a business-class air ticket from New Delhi. Kloor wrote: "She is often heralded as a tireless 'defender of the poor,' someone who has courageously taken her stand among the peasant farmers of India. Let it be noted, however, that this champion of the downtrodden doesn't exactly live a peasant's lifestyle."[53] Wikipedia - Shiva

What about what we call Regenerative Agriculture? I hear nothing here about ruminant animals. It may be superior to the terrible practices here in the West, but I fear it may be a degraded form of an even superior land management involving cows and other native Indian ruminants. You can compost all you like. Without animals the soil degrades.

Cattle were always an integral part of agriculture in the Indian subcontinent. The interview was short and could have been overlooked. The dung of the cattle along with the straw waste was collected every morning while cleaning the cattle shed, and piled up in a place. This was then used as manure on the field just before ploughing. There is also a practice in south India to heard sheep on the fallow fields for a few days so that the urine and dung can fertilise them. These practices are followed even now.

About the anti-biotech activist Vandana Shiva: Shiva has attracted intense criticism from the scientific community for perpetuating long-debunked myths about agriculture, biotechnology and food safety.

"Shiva is scheduled to speak in late January at Stanford University and the University of California, Santa Cruz on “equitable and sustainable” farming methods. Her positions on a variety of issues have irked and at times outraged scientists who consider her a disseminator of misinformation who profits at the rate of $40,000 a lecture (or more) to spread propaganda critical of mainstream views of biotechnology. Raised in prosperity, this Indian Brahmin was formally trained as a philosopher, embracing and promoting a form of Quantum Theory that is now widely dismissed. She often falsely claims that she is a trained physicist, and those false ‘scientific’ credentials are often echoed by her supporters. The GLP has carried numerous articles about her history of misstatements and fabrications (here, here, here). She was the subject of a scathing critique, “Seeds of Doubt,” by Michael Specter of The New Yorker, which documented her history of misleading claims and what Specter maintained often verged on anti-science gibberish.
For more than three decades, she has relentlessly campaigned against globalization, focusing on food and agriculture socio-economic issues and an opposition to GMOs, free trade and intellectual property rights. She alternately promotes land redistribution, indigenous and peasant farmers’ rights, organic-only food production and ayurvedic health practices over conventional medicines, all of which she characterizes as an “earth democracy” movement necessary to restore “harmony,” people and nature.
Shiva receives financial backing from high-profile activist groups such as the Center for Food Safety, which shares offices with her in Washington. Among her most controversial talking points is her false claim that there was no hunger in India prior to the Green Revolution. The truth is almost 180 degrees the opposite, as the Green Revolution, marked in part by the introduction of synthetic chemical fertilizers and pesticides enable massive increases in food production. A recent review of the evidence shows, “the production of cereal crops tripled during this period, with only a 30% increase in land area cultivated.” Shiva also blames the Green Revolution for increasing poverty, indebtedness and despair among farmers. Her notorious allegation that the introduction of insect-resistant GMO crops in India led many farmers to commit suicide has been evaluated and dismissed as inaccurate. Shiva is also a fierce opponent of so-called Golden Rice, a crop engineered to combat vitamin A deficiency in developing countries.
In response to the scheduling of her two talks at Stanford and UC Santa Cruz, 39 scientists from around the world co-authored an open letter to both universities protesting the invitations. The signatories told the GLP that their aim is to alert the events’ organizers, participants and attendees to the numerous falsehoods in Shiva’s philosophy. The letter, reproduced below in full, blasts Shiva for her “use of anti-scientific rhetoric to support unethical positions.” Neither university has scheduled a scientist to present the evidence-based case for crop biotechnology." geneticliteracyproject.org/2020/01/14/39-biotech-experts-open-letter-protests-anti-gmo-activist-vandana-shivas-anti-science-talks-at-stanford-and-uc-santa-cruz/

Is vedic a brand or something. Why can't it be called Indian? Maybe vedic culture nurtured it more. But these things are pre-vedic right?

Native americans had a similar practice where they would plant beans, corn, and squash together. The corn worked as a support for the beans which fixed nitrogen and the squash leaves worked as ground cover to retain moistur. They called them the three sisters.

Dr. Vandana Shiva is my icon! Thank you for featuring this talk with her. I wasn't aware of the history of agriculture. I have been growing some of my food in my backyard using many of the Vedic farming techniques for the past few years with compost from my kitchen and garden. My family and friends can attest that the produce tastes better than anything you can buy in the market!

Unless India recognises its Vedic roots, this kind of thing will continue to happen. For that, this secular state must be made an explicitly Hindu state. When Indian state proudly affirms it is the caretaker of the Vedic Hindu civilization, the whole world will have to accept its superiority and authority.

Wow. Yet another one making a claim in the form of an adhominem. There is nothing chauvinistic about facts. Facts were presented and a court case was also won in the past. But all u can do is defame people without even giving any kind of explanation ...

People of the Indian race were one of the most highly civilized and intelligent.
We had almost everything from resources to farming techniques, Ayurveda, Aerospace science technology etc etc.
And even today i am very proud to say that we have preserved our genes and culture. The only difference now is all of our intelligent minds are now slave of the WEST. Because our own country after independence failed to acknowledge our legendary past and instead we were told that our history was nothing short of a myth.
As everyone know that Congress was responsible for making India into a dumping ground for foreign products and companies. By doing this they were successful in making the Indians believe that there was never something productive that came from our civilization and all was developed by the west.
You people can't even believe that so many generations of Hindus post independence lived and died without knowing anything about their culture and that's a sad thing. But I'm happy that things are changing now and we will require another decade or so to stand where we stood at one point in the ancient world. The true identity of bharath was always the center of knowledge and dharma. What we now have is just the hardware(meaning our physical body our genes from our ancestors) but the software(meaning knowledge and awareness about dharma and our culture that comes from family to children) is highly restricted.
The parents should awaken first then they will be able to spread the awareness to their childrens or else we will be just be like robots who can be reprogrammed by anybody to suit his agenda. We are a nation an ethnic group and an ancient culture so it's time we start acting like one and stop being intellectually vulnerable to outside negative influences whose intention is to digest you and then call you its property.
    Jai shree Ram
    Jai Hind 🙏
