Paper Luigi one of my best friends has PTSD that was brought on by a similar situation to Bernie, trust me she is almost textbook with how she acts. Complex PTSD mainly, which is caused by long-term trauma such as neglect and abuse, as compared to a single traumatic event like a bomb going off. Hating herself, feeling like she can’t trust anyone and immediately jumping to the worst conclusion, and having difficulty with relationships, both in terms of trusting others and not falling in with less-than-loving partners (see: most of Bernie’s possible marriages, ESPECIALLY to Felix, it’s depressing as hell. she only gets an actually happy ending in like 3-4), just to name a few

The lack of female War Masters is especially baffling because of one thing: they're already in the game. When you go Blue Lions and get to Chapter 19 where you need to protect Claude, if you have recruited Hilda, the generic that replaces her on that map is a female War Master. So they're technically in the game, but for some reason I can't fathom we don't have access to them. What's the deal there?
@@shippouma121 Assuming that does happen, I'd argue it be too late. The new classes aren't coming until the 4th wave of DLC, which is coming out I think in March or April 2020. That is nearly 9 months after the release of Three Houses. I doubt many of the current players will still be around when they finally get added to the game. For comparison, all the DLC for Shadows of Valentia, which included optional grinding, new story, and new characters were all released within 2-3 months after Shadows of Valentia released.
Bernadetta is like a breath of fresh air to me. I have never seen a character who needs so much help, especially a female one who tends to be portrayed as strong and independent as current trend goes. I am so glad to see her digging out of her hibernating hole, even if sometimes she fails. She reminds me that a person can be likable even he/she is totally vulnerable without acting tough. One thing I really like about Bernie is her sheer honesty. The fact that she can't hide her thoughts is her greatest weapon in my opinion.
It's as she said herself, even if her efforts to leave her comfort zone fail and she retreats back into her room she can always muster up the courage to come out and try again the next day.
I completely agree. As much as I love strong female characters who kick ass, one of my favorite characters of all time, Sakura Matou from the fate series, is the exact opposite of that.
Ah, Bernie. One of the most polarizing of 3H characters. I think her main problem is that a LOT of her C supports follow the same beat of her freaking out over some dumb misunderstanding on her part, despite many trying to help her. Then you learn of why she's so paranoid and it clicks. But for some (Mangs and Mekkah included), the reasoning doesn't excuse the tedium of her going "AH PLEASE DON'T HURT ME" Buuuuut she gets better, and part of the reason why I don't flat out "hate" her is because Erika Mendez just plays the part so damn well. The screams, the voice inflections, it's weirdly endearing in some places. JPN Bernie is just torture on the ears.
JPN Bernie sounds like Donald Duck. When my friend first showed me the beauty of JPN Bernie, I thought he was fucking me. Just what were they thinking with that voice. English Mercedes seems like 10/10 voice compared to that.
I love how in Crimson Flower you just never see her in her room, which i feel is a real character growth and a cute touch to her character as she improves
I found Bernadetta a tad annoying until I hit a specific support (i cant remember which at the moment) where I instantly related to her, as I am going through very harsh anxiety issues myself. She's probably the character I relate to most actually, even if she isn't my favorite. I'm happy that intelligence systems managed to handle a character with anxiety with some tact. As for the issue of the game portraying her anxiety in a comedic light... it bothered me at first but as i advanced in my recovery and watched Bernie become more confident herself, i came to the realization that anxiety is a funny thing, as in it's almost always based on no facts and it never really makes sense to those who cant experience it. With that point of view I was able to enjoy the character much more
a huge thing people don't understand about mental illness, both irl and when in fiction, is that a lot of times its irrational. the biggest complaints people have with characters like bernie and even dimitri is that nothing they feel or do is how a rational person would handles things and... thats the fucking point
Luna's Peridot My problem is how overblown her paranoia is, while it is still irrational, the way it’s portrayed is a far cry from how it affects the majority of people. I don’t hate it for her character though, I just find it off putting how she misrepresents the demographic she’s supposed to cover for the sake of being the butt of the joke.

That while many people wouldn't say the things she says out loud what she says still lines up with their internal thought processes. chrimbo math I get that, as I said it isn’t the anxiety that bothers me. It’s the paranoia, namely the part that extends beyond normal anxiety (because there is a bit of built in paranoia in anxiety): the stuff where she assumes everyone wants her dead or is trying to kill her. While that does occasionally cross the mind of those with anxiety, it’s not that common or even as nagging as the assumption that you’re just a bother that people want to leave them alone. THAT is what is overblown for the sake of comedy imo. All that said Bernie is one of my favorite 3H characters regardless of how the game mixes messages with her.
Bow knights are the only mounted class without a spd penalty, it actually has a +1 Spd modifier or +3 Spd if dismounted while Snipers have 0. There is already enough miscoception about Bow knight being worse than Sniper, please...
bow knights are obviously better but the growths of snipers are always more beneficial. you wouldn't really want to be a bow knight until you're sure the character doesn't need much more strength or speed growths
@@volterion6317 On maddening mode I hear the guaranteed double hit from the Sniper's Hunter's Volley is pretty valuable as its much harder to double enemies in that mode.
@@veravera6571 If you want your bow user to go bow knight, then they should turn into a bow knight ASPA. The 5% less speed growth isn't much, and the class already has higher base speed than a sniper (1+ speed mounted and +3 speed unmounted compared to a sniper) You should only stay sniper if you want Hunter's Volley. It's a great skill in maddening. Being able to double all the time at range is not a joke.
To be fair, most of the Crests in the game proc so rarely that it's hard to consider them good, because you never consider them when strategizing. Only exceptions are the Crest of Flames and Fraldarius.
You'll be saying it's a good crest when it helps you escape death by being able to attack a second or even a third time. It has saved Bernadettas life on a handful of occasions on my 2 full playthroughs so far. But again it's all based on how good your RNG is. Let's see how my third playthrough is going to look like.

For utility I think the combat art "Encloser" is well worth mentioning. It's a combat art that prevents the enemy that gets hit from moving (even demonic beasts.) I've had Bernadetta and Claude get it and it is incredibly useful for suppressing enemies that can't be taken out right away. Paired with bow range +2 that makes Encloser have 4 range and safe to use without fear of counterattacks from the vast majority of enemies. Deadeye is good for extreme range, but it's not as good if you didn't get a lot strength on Bernadetta or stuff her full of strength stat boosters. For future spotlights I'd recommend covering unique or uncommon combat arts (or just the ones that are useful) that the character has. You can of course do whatever you want, but that's how I'd do things.
Yeah, not mentioning combat arts is the main reason people think Cyril is bad. I mean Cyril starts of with one of the best combat arts in the game. +3 Might and a guaranteed double attack, before the enemy can attack, is nothing to sneeze at. Very useful in Maddening too.
@@milkman9412 No, bow range+ does affect combat arts. Weapon range doesn't affect combat arts. Deadeye is 3-5 range at base and you get 3-7 with bow knight. I've played the game for long enough to know that. A long bow would not increase your range however. I'm speaking from experience; It's not a theory craft of how I *could* use them. I *did* use both Bernadetta and Claude with Encloser, as bow knights; at 4 range. You can boot up the game and check yourself. Just as it doesn't for weapon range; it won't change the listed range on the combat art, but it will change the actual range. Here's an example: With bow range +2 a long bow will have 2-5 range, (from 2-3 at base) but if a combat art is used it will use the default range of the combat art. So a curved shot (2-3 range combat art) with a long bow is still 2-5 range. This gives to some people; the false impression of combat arts being unaffected by bow range+. In reality they're just using a combat art with the same range as their bow, so it *feels* like it's unaffected, but it's not. When using a combat art the base range of your weapon is irrelevant; the combat art takes its place and then has its range modified by bow range+.
I think, for me at least, one of the main reasons I like Bernadetta so much is because her B support with Byleth literally moved me to tears. I have hardly ever cried at something in a Fire Emblem game, let alone a single support conversation!
The one bad thing about the B support is that it makes the A support insufferable to me. It's bad enough that Byleth deliberately tries to freak her out for laughs after that B support. But giving the player a dialogue choice between two different ways to mock it is just rubbing it in.
Actually I think it was just her mother that had her sent to the monastery. While her relationship with her dad was abysmal Bernadetta still often shows concern about her mother's wellbeing and does think of her warmly. Going to the monastery would let her get away from her father's controlling behaviour and would let Bernadetta come out of her shell more. Bernadetta wouldn't ever go by choice so her mom did the next best thing and whisked her away as she slept.
Something tells me the "Pass" skill is what she unintentionally teaches Felix during their support, since she can practically get behind enemies and catch them off guard by flailing around like a wild creature or so Felix says
I think there's one major error you made in Bernadetta's backstory. You said her mother and father both kidnapped her and sent her to the monastery. However, the support conversation only says the mother did so. I interpreted that to mean that Bernadetta's mother defied her husband to spirit her daughter away from his abuse. In other words, I think her mother was trying to save Bernadetta. And it worked.
This is a good point. It's a bit unclear as to what her mother's actions was, I just thought it was her parents who made the choice, and her mother who carried out the transfering. I would think that if her mother went against the father's will, he would just send soldiers to the monastery to bring her back? So it doesn't make sense the mother did this to get her away to me, but you could be right.
@@Mangs1337 I think the main reason he didn't try to take Bernie back is the damage it would do to his reputation. He obviously sees his daughter as a commodity. His abusive actions are all geared towards making her the "perfect" wife so that she can/will marry the person of his choosing and bring further power to HIS line. The COS is HUGELY powerful and influential in Fodlan. What would it look like to the other nobles if he removed his daughter from there? Especially considering that the future rulers of Fodlan and their most important retainers, the Prime Minister's son, as well as the sons of the Minister of Defense and the Minister of the Interior are all currently enrolled there. TLDR: He didn't retrieve his daughter because it would raise questions and make him look bad.
@@Mangs1337 I can't find a copy of it, but I do recall Bernadetta saying speaking positively about her mother in her monastery dialogue one month. This tells me that that the relationship between those two was positive. As for why she wasn't just dragged back, for one, her father had pretty much given up on her anyway. As for why her father didn't just drag her back, it probably would have hurt his reputation. Remember that House Varley was in charge of maintaining relations with the Church of Seiros. Marching soldiers into town to drag a student out against her will wasn't in his best interests. Especially as he'd probably been an early cog in the plot to overthrow the church.

Her A Support with Byleth pisses me right the fuck off. Having make Byleth make fun of the anxieties she told you last support are due to severe child abuse she suffered sucks. Making the player choose between two ways to mock her is just rubbing it in.
@@bificommander remember these things 1. She told them that 5 years ago, so it would be one of those things it would be better time to poke fun at. 2. These two have grown close enough to where Byleth feels comfortable enough to do so. Bernie gets mad about it, but she treats it more as an annoyance, like your friend reminding you of that one time you shit your pants, rather than taking it as a huge offense and hating them, so I think it's fine.

Plus, although this video argues otherwise, she doesn't seem all that over her fears post-timeskip to me. (That may be due to the limitations of letting the support conversations do character development. Everyone's monastary lines are written without knowledge of how many supports the player will have unlocked.) 2: IIRC, it's not just her being annoyed at her phobia being mentioned. That would have been more palatable, but I seem to remember her actually freaking out and her then being displeased that you deliberatly scared her. Not an outright panic attack perhaps, but it's still not very nice to do. I might have been more willing to use your interpretation if it wasn't for her S support. Despite her C support having her state that she never feels scared when she has to be around you, her assumption when you take her to the godess tower is that you're getting her alone to murder her. Which is not only a great start to a relationship, but also puts a damper on the idea that she's now sufficiently over her anxieties that she doesn't it so much if you jokingly invoke them.
Bernie's pretty awesome as a Falcon Knight too. On my Silver Snow run right now and I use her, Petra and Ingrid as a sort of wolfpack squad that just tears enemies to shreds.
I agree, she was my pegasus knight for both CF and GD (even though Petra and Leonie were right there). Plus since that class line likes lances, I took to using Vengeance on her whenever the opportunity strikes, synergizes very well with her personal. The only problem is getting her sword rank up but there's plenty of time to do that. Also, I don't know how but she had more strength as a falcon knight than she does right now in my BL playthrough as a bow knight for some reason, not to mention she has Swift Sparrow on her too. Does Falcon Knight have some sort of strength bonus I'm not aware of or am I just getting really lucky with this class line (Since Ingrid is also getting decent strength as an FK and no DB)?
11:20 Someone who took a closer look at crest activation rates mentioned that the crest of Indech when activated just activates a brave effect, therefore her crest does not synergize with brave weapons since they cannot stack.
That's weird. I'm 100% sure that Bernadetta crest did activate in my play with a brave bow. I was in the last map of CF againist a golem she ended doing 3 attacks in row.

Youre actually wrong. It can appear that way because she often two shots enemies even on maddening, but no you can triple enemies with indech proc and brave bow. Ive done it and recorded it.
@@SadisticNiles it does indeed stack. I proced it when I was using a brave bow+ and she attacked 3 times, I was confused about what happened since I never paid attention to any Crest except Byleth. Edit: Now that I think about it some more I believe it does proc with a brave bow, but only if you don't quad, since you can't attack more than 4 times at once.

Bernie is a great early unit, on maddening she helped out a lot. The thing that makes her not such a great unit is her low strength is hard to offset with classes that can fix her strength she has banes in.
Me *a moron*: makes Bernadetta a Wyvern Lord in Maddening anyway, because it's funny. I now don't have bow range +2 which makes Encloser have 4 range and hate myself.
Bernie was my favorite character on the Black Eagles. I find her really endearing, but I get why she's a turn off to many. I have some anxiety problems, but compared to her, I might as well be an extrovert. She also became one of my strongest units by the end, and was my primary damage dealer for demonic beats. I only used her in my first run, which was the church route, so I couldn't abuse NG+ to over-invest into her. I just used most of my speed, attack, and dex boosting items on her, and she turned out great.
I think she's polarizing because I believe there's an expectation that a character like this is an anxious and standoffish wreck, someone shows them mercy, love, and warmth, and then she instantly converts into an insecure cuddlebug that melts into the arms of everyone around her. Bernie never really takes that step. Completely seperate from her issues, she really likes being left alone to do her own thing most of the time, and that never changes. She never really undergoes that transformation that I think a lot of people expect she will, so it maybe feels like wasted effort or some sort of dis. Kind of a hot take, but, until I come up with a better explanation, that's what I got.
Honestly, I think she might be one of the best candidates. Pass is a very useful skill for dancers to have for maneuvering to whoever needs that dance most in a tense situation, and bows are actually a great way for you dancer to contribute when a dance isn't helpful, especially with Deadeye and Encloser. Bernie's fairly low strength means you lose less damage in giving her turn to someone else, the only mastery class she's really suited for is Bow Knight which is an easy pass, and lets you ignore lances and mounted past getting Pass to get some nice healing magic, and while she's certainly no armor knight, she's a bit tougher than a lot of other good candidates for the role.
My Bernadetta was very bad in my Silver Snow playthrough, because I promoted her to cavalier instead of to archer, where she could have gotten the Hit +20 skill. In my Crimson Flower playthrough, I promoted her to archer first, then to sniper, and bow knight, where she did noticeably a lot better.
I dont think it has to do with the darkness of it. Otherwise they wouldve rewritten the whole thing. Probably trying to change a misreading of sexual abuse
@OkayGotIt nah i think that sort of thing would be exactly what they would want a character to grow out of. It might just be nintendos attempt to make it slightly more child friendly or prevent a misreading of a character. Either way it would be nice to know what they were thinking
Bernadetta's very interesting from my standpoint. As someone who went through similar parental circumstances as her, I feel like she is a scarily accurate interpretation of a mindset marred by parental abuse. I got chills reading her Byleth C support self-deprecation because I had been exactly in her shoes in the past - I know how that feels... But going off my own personal experience, this type of paranoia and anxiety that Bernie displays is something that, realistically, should be kept internally rather than externally - I don't see how someone like Count Varley wouldn't get upset at that, which would lead to Bernie learning to keep her fears to herself (as I did). At the same time, though, writing her in a more subtle fashion runs the risk of the general public completely missing aspects of her character. Ignatz is a great example of this, in that his writing is done in a subtle, realistic manner, but he isn't half as popular or notable - arguably because this isn't done prevalently. Bernadetta on the other hand, by being more clear and external in this mindset, becomes easier to define, at the cost of being potentially annoying to some or "badly written" to others.

Bow Knight doesn't have Strength and Speed penalties, it doesn't have much in the way of growths (which doesn't matter much since you're already past 30) but it actually gives the same +1 Strength bonus as sniper (one lower than Paladin's +2) and +1 Speed even while mounted, Which is 2 higher than Paladin and Sniper doesn't get a speed bonus. If you make her a bow knight and then just dismount her and never get back on the horse,then compared to sniper she trades 2 Dex and 2 Luck for +3 Speed, +1 Defense, +1 Move, and +1 Bow Range.
I personally relate to Bernadetta with anxiety I get why people don’t like her but I would personally give her 4 stars as a character also her strength isn’t that bad especially with the way promo gains work I would give her 4 stars as a unit
Bernadetta seems like one of the characters the developers put a LOT of thought into. Her growths by themselves are very underwhelming, but then they purposefully give her an amazing and unique tool kit of rare spells, Crest and personal ability, so it entices players to want to use her and be rewarded for investing in her. I don't know if it was on purpose, but this tells a narrative that investing a lot of care into Bernadetta is the way to make her shine really bright
Frankly the alterations to her Blyleth C Support make it seem more dark since it removes the details of what exactly the thing she was being tied to the chair to be trained in outside of "Being a good wife" which could take on a much worse meaning. It's like how covering Tharja's ass in that Awakening DLC made the image more suggestive than it was originally.

Great job with the video Mangs and honestly when I bought my copy before the patch, the original line hit me in my heart but then after the patch and the line change, I still understood Bernie's problem. As it is, I don't really know what to feel about the line change other then just a shrug but I may use Bernie differently in my NG+ run.
My Bernie got strength screwed in my first run and I didn't like her from the start. It didn't help that my Ashe and Leonie got strength, speed, and Dex blessed
Speed screwed, she ended up with 16 Speed at the end of the Crimson Flower Route. She was only useful because she used a bow where many Falcon Knights spawned in. Only Byleth, an under leveled Shamir, Ignatz "Let Me Paint You A Picture", and Ingrid could hurt them. I don't know what happened. She flopped so hard that every time I moved her into an enemy's line of sight, she usually ends up dying and doubled on attacks.
I'm on my first playthrough and recruited Bernie to BL a couple days ago. So far, I like her. - I do agree that her having so many support routes is a bit much, especially since most of her C ranks are basically her misunderstanding whoever she's talking to and freaking out. I have heard arguments that she has the THIRD HIGHEST number of supports to reflect how she wants to make friends at the monestary, but I feel like that is just too many. I can definitely see some interesting dynamics between Bernie and students outside the BE (mostly Ashe, Mercedes, and Sylvain from BL and Ignatz from GD), but it definitely feels like a stretch after a point - EDIT: got a couple C Supports with Bernie and, so far, only the one with Byleth was weird (conversation's going well until Byleth randomly brings up overhearing Bernie singing and the latter flips out). Dorothea's was actually pretty organic with Bernie expressing her desire to be friends, but getting PTSD to what her dad did to the last commoner she befriended and Ingrid was more the crazy one in their C Support (oddly, that one seemed to work since Ingrid is used to dealing with Sylvain's shenanigans and wasn't aware of Bernie's PTSD, so a stronger hand makes sense for her)
Something you didn't touch on is how she learns Deadeye, that thing is SO good. Gives her insane range super early, and the most beautiful thing is that even if it misses, it will still aggro the target to make them come to you like an idiot. I remember doing that to the boss of the bridge chapter in non-CF routes, it's very funny She's also the only character aside from Claude to get Encloser, which can trivialize monster fights or render any enemy useless, and Vengeance but that's kinda memey Her having a talent in lances also gives her very easy access to pegasus knight, which is arguably the best T2 class. The low strength is an issue, but I feel like people overstate that a bit too much in general, it can be circumvented pretty easily: batallions give really good bonuses, you get _faire skills, you can get DB by going through brigand, or just use good weapons. I remember at the end of my BL run Ingrid had 23 strength at level 37 and she was ORKOing stuff just fine. Though that said, she isn't that great, that shitty base speed and defense really hurts her, especially in maddening, but I think she's a super interesting and fun unit and that probably plays a big part into why I like her so much (and yes she must be protected) Oh and something that I found super touching is how in the everyone is sad month, she comes out of her room to put flowers on Jeralt's grave. She's the girl who's afraid of everything, but she still finds the courage to go do that, like come on that's the sweetest thing ever And you see her try constantly to get better and that's super endearing
I think you really exaggerating the people that don't like her. There's a whole lot more people that likes her that don't. Can even make a poll about it.
This was really good. It's thanks to your video on Fernie that made me realize that he's not as bad as I originally thought. I honestly look forward to seeing these sorts of videos. And you doing one on Bernadetta makes a lot of sense as there are parts of her character that many might miss. I don't mind the support change but I wish that they kept the context that she was tied to a chair to become a good wife in the new support as without it, the context is kinda missing. I do think one of the characters you could do a spotlight on next is Ashe, the Blue Lion's archer, though I really wouldn't be mad if you did someone else cause these videos shine light onto things about these characters some may miss. All and all, keep up the good work and I can't wait to see the next one.
Despite Bernie's pretty bad C supports I liked finding out about her backstory. Many characters have interesting backgrounds and although I don't particularly enjoy her overreactions her growth is touching. On a different note, fingers crossed for Hilda and Sylvain spotlights.
I have not beaten a single route yet, but my Bernie is an amazing Archer and a Sorceress, having blizzard and thoron at early levels balanced her out amazingly especially once I got a magic bow to capitalize on that too.
Bernie is great! Well, I like her as a unit and she is a more tragic character, and her design is great. I like purple, so her having that in her design is appealing to me. Though, when she's on the battlefield, she is a monster. I don't have the need to "protect".

I remember my first CF playthrough, Bernie was faring the same as Shamir in the battlefields. But then I've noticed that yeah her stats are lower so that was quite a surprise.
I’m personally a fan of her A rank with Felix, if only because it takes place in the form of a montage, showing that their relationship has a persistently positive effect on her day-to-day life.
I relate to Bernadetta a lot. But rather than being groomed to silence for marriage, I would sit silently while my family would fight. Now I'm a messed up dude with social problems, and I h8 myself. So Bernadetta is a character I see myself in, I think more people should give her a shot
My absolute favourite support pairing in FE3H is Bernadetta and Raphael. Raphael treats Bernadetta and her PTSD with kindness and patience, things which she wasn't given much of in her early life. He offers to help her and she slowly opens up to him and eventually people around her. They eventually have a picnic together, where Bernadetta isn't very anxious at all. She gives him some food she cooked, which Raphael really enjoys. Bernadetta offers to cook some more for him and they hope the war ends soon so she can cook some more. Raphael cooked for his little sister so I can imagine cooking in the kitchen with Bernadetta. In the paired endings, Raphael guides Bernadetta to come out of her shell and she becomes much happier because of it. It's also a massive kick in the face for her father because her father hates commoners.
i only recruited her because someone said, his bernie was a beast. while i wasnt so lucky with mine, i immediatley fell in love with her. she just resonates with me because i grew up with a very abusive mother and that "annoying overly paranoid" side she shows was accurately what was going on in my head on a daily basis. im a bit sad that it looks like its played for laughs tho
7:27 I think the line change is fine. I saw the line after the change, and got the same message from it. Sure, it removes the example of the quiet game, but that just leaves some of his reasons for chair-tieing to the imagination. The removal of the word "submissive" is trivial. I figured that out from the chair thing. Overall, sure, less detail is given, but sometimes less is more.
On my first playthrough Bernadetta was killing everything, armor units included. She became a beast and had really good levels throughout the whole game.
Additional facts Bernadetta English VA also voice raphtalia from shield hero (my second favourite anime female character) And Ferdinand English VA voice naofumi also from shield hero as the main character and raphtalia love interest (my second favourite male anime character) So listening to their supports I cant not ear naofumi and raphtalia even if only a bit.

Good review. I definitely had a blessed Bernie who was rolling over the Crimson Flower lategame as a Bow Knight, but there was certainly some luck involved. Good levels early have that snowball effect, after all. I sent her from Noble to Soldier, then Archer-Sniper-Bow Knight.
I did Black Eagle Church Route for my first run, and I made my Bernadetta a Sniper and then a Bow Knight. OMG she was my most powerful character after Byleth!!! One-hitting like everything! (And easily doubling everything! I got really lucky with her level ups because she had high speed without ever getting any speed item power ups. I did give her a speed increasing ring though). Add to that her great distance and being a mounted unit, then I would generally use my Dancer on Bernadetta and just destroy every enemy. As to her character, I found her annoying at first, but her sweetness and abusive backstory won me over. (And her supports with Felix had me laughing to the point of tears)
As someone who was abused as a child and went through years of crippling social anxiety and borderline paranoia as a result, I personally do NOT find Bernadetta relatable at all. That being said, I understand where they were trying to go with her. Her C supports are some of the worst thing in this game, they're not funny and they're so god damn irritating. I am glad she blossoms after timeskip though, it's a small redemption.
I think the issue is that they tried to draw attention to her but also tried making her the butt of countless jokes, they didn't do justice to the type of person she's meant to stand as a representative of, ESPECIALLY in her C supports

I really liked Bernie as a unit when I played, then against I cultivated her as a Lancer, not as an Archer... My first playthrough took her to paladin and kept her there honestly. After that since I used her so heavily in a Frontline role, I wanted to supplement her defense for future playthroughs so I put in a TON of work and made her an Armour Knight for Pavise. Now with Pavise and Aegis, I have a super speedy tank of a Frontline unit that I can handily take as a Falcon Knight for some high mobility high speed doubling/tripling with her skill. Add on the jewel that Mercedes gets from her paralogue (with the appropriate NG+ crest item) and she had 2x the chance to proc Pavise/Aegis AND nulls Flyer effectiveness, throw in the Death Knight's Lance from the same fight and she's a terrifying powerhouse who is super hard to hit and will only take 1 or 2 damage when she is hit. Not as dodgy as Petra, but one of my best Frontline units by far
i accept that bernadetta has flaws... she isn't the greatest character in all of three houses, but she'll always be my personal favorite... i've had extremely crippling anxiety for a while now and it's made my life so much harder... socializing with others has been extremely difficult and i'm terrified of dissapointing those around me... and it's difficult to even go to school... i relate to her struggles in so many ways, from a fear of parental/authority figures, and irrational mental breakdowns... and it's really nice to know that there's someone out there like me ^-^... and i'm sure there's many others that share the same struggles... so even through all of the community backlash, the terrible s support, and all of the drama surrounding her c supports and censored b support (wow bernie really got the short end of the stick when it comes to supports), she'll always be my favorite character also she ended up getting some really nice growths in my first playthrough (blue lions) and after giving her a few strength/crit rate boosting items it completely made up for any flaws she had. and when i gave her the failnaught and magic bow? yeah she kinda became the best unit on my team... ashe did incredibly well too, three houses archers are my favorite incarnation of archers in all of fire emblem, and i hope ashe, bernadetta, and claude too will do well in my golden deer playthrough :D
To put it bluntly, I love Bernadetta, as someone who has a lot of anxiety and who thinks people hate them I can understand Bernadetta though the familial issues are something I don't have which is a blessing unto itself.
I can only guess how other people experienced Bernadetta, but I’ve never recruited her before the Eagles routes and I was pretty excited for her. But I agree that her C supports were tedious, so much so that I skipped most of them during the Silver Snow route because I didn’t want to sit through them again. She’s grown on me, though, and I intend on recruiting her again during my second Deer route. Utility-wise, she’s walked the same path both Eagles playthroughs, namely archer-sniper-bow knight. And I gotta say, if you give her some luck boosters to counteract her low luck stat, she crits almost everyone aside from armored units. Even without crits, Bernie was a heavy hitter (although lance-wise she didn’t do much for me), who was perfect for making waves along the battlefield and Deadeye-ing enemies who couldn’t hit back because she was out of reach for them. All in all, I’d rate Bernie a 7/10, she was a lovable character to me, but by far not my favorite from the Eagles.
I tend to make Bernadetta a Falcon Knight with Pass and keep her using bows. It takes a lot of investment, especially for Sword C Rank, but the combination makes for the most versatile chip-damagger of the whole game. Give her a brave-bow and the combar art "Encloser" for even more utility and stage control.
On my Black Eagles playthrough, Bernadetta was really good. I went the archer-sniper-bow knight way and I never had any issues dealing damages to ennemies(was on Hard/Classic). I even managed to forge the Parthia and gave it to her. Oh boy she was so good at murerding everything with that bow+her personal skill. I definitely think you can be RNG screwed with her though, that would explain why people are so divided about her saying she's really good or really bad.
My Bernadetta was the sniper on my team. I literally nicknamed her the sniper. She has gone so many critical hits other then my character and a few characters on the black eagles. She was taking enemies out left and right. Bernadetta is one of my favorite characters to use in the entire game. She’s so good.
Fun story: On Verdant Wind, during the Blood of Eagle and Lion Chapter, I actually made sure that I avoided Bernadetta. It made her the second most bothersome element in the Chapter (the other being Felix) but I wasn't about to kill someone who seemed like she didn't want to be there.

Personally, for me, what really makes Bernadetta click for me is her growth. While she never fully gets out of her anxiety (something she even admits to), I find it cool to see how she does warm up to others over time, as she's able to converse with others much more easily in Part 2 compared to Part 1. That moment where she gets out of her room to put flowers on Jeralt's grave is honestly one of my favorite moments of the game, and showed me just how much of a sweetheart she is once you get past her anxiety problems. And at the least, I do find her behavior reasonable. If she was paranoid and easily frightened for no reason, I could understand those who don't like her, but that isn't the case. Her supports pretty much spell out exactly why she tends to assume the worst when others talk to her, hence why I pretty much never laughed whenever she freaked out. The execution isn't perfect, but I still think she's a good character for those who struggle with anxiety to relate to. As a plus, Erica Mendez gives one of the finest vocal performances in the game with her, which is saying a lot given how excellent Three Houses' voice acting is.

The lack of female War Masters is especially baffling because of one thing: they're already in the game. When you go Blue Lions and get to Chapter 19 where you need to protect Claude, if you have recruited Hilda, the generic that replaces her on that map is a female War Master. So they're technically in the game, but for some reason I can't fathom we don't have access to them. What's the deal there?

@@shippouma121 Assuming that does happen, I'd argue it be too late. The new classes aren't coming until the 4th wave of DLC, which is coming out I think in March or April 2020. That is nearly 9 months after the release of Three Houses. I doubt many of the current players will still be around when they finally get added to the game. For comparison, all the DLC for Shadows of Valentia, which included optional grinding, new story, and new characters were all released within 2-3 months after Shadows of Valentia released.

Bernadetta is like a breath of fresh air to me. I have never seen a character who needs so much help, especially a female one who tends to be portrayed as strong and independent as current trend goes. I am so glad to see her digging out of her hibernating hole, even if sometimes she fails. She reminds me that a person can be likable even he/she is totally vulnerable without acting tough. One thing I really like about Bernie is her sheer honesty. The fact that she can't hide her thoughts is her greatest weapon in my opinion.
It's as she said herself, even if her efforts to leave her comfort zone fail and she retreats back into her room she can always muster up the courage to come out and try again the next day.
I completely agree. As much as I love strong female characters who kick ass, one of my favorite characters of all time, Sakura Matou from the fate series, is the exact opposite of that.

Ah, Bernie. One of the most polarizing of 3H characters.
I think her main problem is that a LOT of her C supports follow the same beat of her freaking out over some dumb misunderstanding on her part, despite many trying to help her. Then you learn of why she's so paranoid and it clicks. But for some (Mangs and Mekkah included), the reasoning doesn't excuse the tedium of her going "AH PLEASE DON'T HURT ME"
Buuuuut she gets better, and part of the reason why I don't flat out "hate" her is because Erika Mendez just plays the part so damn well. The screams, the voice inflections, it's weirdly endearing in some places.

I found Bernadetta a tad annoying until I hit a specific support (i cant remember which at the moment) where I instantly related to her, as I am going through very harsh anxiety issues myself. She's probably the character I relate to most actually, even if she isn't my favorite. I'm happy that intelligence systems managed to handle a character with anxiety with some tact. As for the issue of the game portraying her anxiety in a comedic light... it bothered me at first but as i advanced in my recovery and watched Bernie become more confident herself, i came to the realization that anxiety is a funny thing, as in it's almost always based on no facts and it never really makes sense to those who cant experience it. With that point of view I was able to enjoy the character much more
a huge thing people don't understand about mental illness, both irl and when in fiction, is that a lot of times its irrational. the biggest complaints people have with characters like bernie and even dimitri is that nothing they feel or do is how a rational person would handles things and... thats the fucking point
Luna's Peridot My problem is how overblown her paranoia is, while it is still irrational, the way it’s portrayed is a far cry from how it affects the majority of people. I don’t hate it for her character though, I just find it off putting how she misrepresents the demographic she’s supposed to cover for the sake of being the butt of the joke.

It’s the paranoia, namely the part that extends beyond normal anxiety (because there is a bit of built in paranoia in anxiety): the stuff where she assumes everyone wants her dead or is trying to kill her. While that does occasionally cross the mind of those with anxiety, it’s not that common or even as nagging as the assumption that you’re just a bother that people want to leave them alone. THAT is what is overblown for the sake of comedy imo. All that said Bernie is one of my favorite 3H characters regardless of how the game mixes messages with her.

@@veravera6571 If you want your bow user to go bow knight, then they should turn into a bow knight ASPA. The 5% less speed growth isn't much, and the class already has higher base speed than a sniper (1+ speed mounted and +3 speed unmounted compared to a sniper)
You should only stay sniper if you want Hunter's Volley. It's a great skill in maddening. Being able to double all the time at range is not a joke.

You'll be saying it's a good crest when it helps you escape death by being able to attack a second or even a third time. It has saved Bernadettas life on a handful of occasions on my 2 full playthroughs so far. But again it's all based on how good your RNG is. Let's see how my third playthrough is going to look like.

For utility I think the combat art "Encloser" is well worth mentioning. It's a combat art that prevents the enemy that gets hit from moving (even demonic beasts.) I've had Bernadetta and Claude get it and it is incredibly useful for suppressing enemies that can't be taken out right away. Paired with bow range +2 that makes Encloser have 4 range and safe to use without fear of counterattacks from the vast majority of enemies. Deadeye is good for extreme range, but it's not as good if you didn't get a lot strength on Bernadetta or stuff her full of strength stat boosters. For future spotlights I'd recommend covering unique or uncommon combat arts (or just the ones that are useful) that the character has. You can of course do whatever you want, but that's how I'd do things.
Yeah, not mentioning combat arts is the main reason people think Cyril is bad. I mean Cyril starts of with one of the best combat arts in the game. +3 Might and a guaranteed double attack, before the enemy can attack, is nothing to sneeze at. Very useful in Maddening too.

@@milkman9412 No, bow range+ does affect combat arts. Weapon range doesn't affect combat arts. Deadeye is 3-5 range at base and you get 3-7 with bow knight. I've played the game for long enough to know that. A long bow would not increase your range however. I'm speaking from experience; It's not a theory craft of how I *could* use them. I *did* use both Bernadetta and Claude with Encloser, as bow knights; at 4 range. You can boot up the game and check yourself. Just as it doesn't for weapon range; it won't change the listed range on the combat art, but it will change the actual range. Here's an example: With bow range +2 a long bow will have 2-5 range, (from 2-3 at base) but if a combat art is used it will use the default range of the combat art. So a curved shot (2-3 range combat art) with a long bow is still 2-5 range. This gives to some people; the false impression of combat arts being unaffected by bow range+. In reality they're just using a combat art with the same range as their bow, so it *feels* like it's unaffected, but it's not. When using a combat art the base range of your weapon is irrelevant; the combat art takes its place and then has its range modified by bow range+.
I think, for me at least, one of the main reasons I like Bernadetta so much is because her B support with Byleth literally moved me to tears. I have hardly ever cried at something in a Fire Emblem game, let alone a single support conversation!
Amen to that. That moment where she tries to say she doesn't deserve affection after spilling out her backstory made me want to hug her right there.

The one bad thing about the B support is that it makes the A support insufferable to me. It's bad enough that Byleth deliberately tries to freak her out for laughs after that B support. But giving the player a dialogue choice between two different ways to mock it is just rubbing it in.
Actually I think it was just her mother that had her sent to the monastery. While her relationship with her dad was abysmal Bernadetta still often shows concern about her mother's wellbeing and does think of her warmly. Going to the monastery would let her get away from her father's controlling behaviour and would let Bernadetta come out of her shell more. Bernadetta wouldn't ever go by choice so her mom did the next best thing and whisked her away as she slept.

I think there's one major error you made in Bernadetta's backstory. You said her mother and father both kidnapped her and sent her to the monastery. However, the support conversation only says the mother did so. I interpreted that to mean that Bernadetta's mother defied her husband to spirit her daughter away from his abuse. In other words, I think her mother was trying to save Bernadetta. And it worked.
This is a good point. It's a bit unclear as to what her mother's actions was, I just thought it was her parents who made the choice, and her mother who carried out the transfering. I would think that if her mother went against the father's will, he would just send soldiers to the monastery to bring her back? So it doesn't make sense the mother did this to get her away to me, but you could be right.
@@Mangs1337 I think the main reason he didn't try to take Bernie back is the damage it would do to his reputation. He obviously sees his daughter as a commodity. His abusive actions are all geared towards making her the "perfect" wife so that she can/will marry the person of his choosing and bring further power to HIS line. The COS is HUGELY powerful and influential in Fodlan. What would it look like to the other nobles if he removed his daughter from there? Especially considering that the future rulers of Fodlan and their most important retainers, the Prime Minister's son, as well as the sons of the Minister of Defense and the Minister of the Interior are all currently enrolled there.
TLDR: He didn't retrieve his daughter because it would raise questions and make him look bad.
@@Mangs1337 I can't find a copy of it, but I do recall Bernadetta saying speaking positively about her mother in her monastery dialogue one month. This tells me that that the relationship between those two was positive. As for why she wasn't just dragged back, for one, her father had pretty much given up on her anyway. As for why her father didn't just drag her back, it probably would have hurt his reputation. Remember that House Varley was in charge of maintaining relations with the Church of Seiros. Marching soldiers into town to drag a student out against her will wasn't in his best interests. Especially as he'd probably been an early cog in the plot to overthrow the church.
I don't have the exact conversation handy either, but I seem to recall Bernie not liking either of her parents. Only her late uncle.

1. Is her B support locked to pre-timeskip? Admittedly it's likely you will have unlocked it then, but I don't think it's certain. Plus, although this video argues otherwise, she doesn't seem all that over her fears post-timeskip to me. (That may be due to the limitations of letting the support conversations do character development. Everyone's monastary lines are written without knowledge of how many supports the player will have unlocked.)
2: IIRC, it's not just her being annoyed at her phobia being mentioned. That would have been more palatable, but I seem to remember her actually freaking out and her then being displeased that you deliberatly scared her. Not an outright panic attack perhaps, but it's still not very nice to do.
I might have been more willing to use your interpretation if it wasn't for her S support. Despite her C support having her state that she never feels scared when she has to be around you, her assumption when you take her to the godess tower is that you're getting her alone to murder her. Which is not only a great start to a relationship, but also puts a damper on the idea that she's now sufficiently over her anxieties that she doesn't it so much if you jokingly invoke them.
Bernie's pretty awesome as a Falcon Knight too. On my Silver Snow run right now and I use her, Petra and Ingrid as a sort of wolfpack squad that just tears enemies to shreds.

I agree, she was my pegasus knight for both CF and GD (even though Petra and Leonie were right there). Plus since that class line likes lances, I took to using Vengeance on her whenever the opportunity strikes, synergizes very well with her personal. The only problem is getting her sword rank up but there's plenty of time to do that.
Also, I don't know how but she had more strength as a falcon knight than she does right now in my BL playthrough as a bow knight for some reason, not to mention she has Swift Sparrow on her too. Does Falcon Knight have some sort of strength bonus I'm not aware of or am I just getting really lucky with this class line (Since Ingrid is also getting decent strength as an FK and no DB)?
11:20 Someone who took a closer look at crest activation rates mentioned that the crest of Indech when activated just activates a brave effect, therefore her crest does not synergize with brave weapons since they cannot stack.

Youre actually wrong. It can appear that way because she often two shots enemies even on maddening, but no you can triple enemies with indech proc and brave bow. Ive done it and recorded it.
You actually get two chances to proc it, after the first shot and after the second shot.

Edit: Now that I think about it some more I believe it does proc with a brave bow, but only if you don't quad, since you can't attack more than 4 times at once.

Bernie is a great early unit, on maddening she helped out a lot. The thing that makes her not such a great unit is her low strength is hard to offset with classes that can fix her strength she has banes in.
Me *a moron*: makes Bernadetta a Wyvern Lord in Maddening anyway, because it's funny. I now don't have bow range +2 which makes Encloser have 4 range and hate myself.
Bernie was my favorite character on the Black Eagles. I find her really endearing, but I get why she's a turn off to many. I have some anxiety problems, but compared to her, I might as well be an extrovert. She also became one of my strongest units by the end, and was my primary damage dealer for demonic beats. I only used her in my first run, which was the church route, so I couldn't abuse NG+ to over-invest into her. I just used most of my speed, attack, and dex boosting items on her, and she turned out great.
I think she's polarizing because I believe there's an expectation that a character like this is an anxious and standoffish wreck, someone shows them mercy, love, and warmth, and then she instantly converts into an insecure cuddlebug that melts into the arms of everyone around her.
Bernie never really takes that step. Completely seperate from her issues, she really likes being left alone to do her own thing most of the time, and that never changes. She never really undergoes that transformation that I think a lot of people expect she will, so it maybe feels like wasted effort or some sort of dis.
Kind of a hot take, but, until I come up with a better explanation, that's what I got.
I turned her into my dancer. Between being able to do magic and bow skills, she has been one of the best dancers I have had.
Honestly, I think she might be one of the best candidates.
Pass is a very useful skill for dancers to have for maneuvering to whoever needs that dance most in a tense situation, and bows are actually a great way for you dancer to contribute when a dance isn't helpful, especially with Deadeye and Encloser. Bernie's fairly low strength means you lose less damage in giving her turn to someone else, the only mastery class she's really suited for is Bow Knight which is an easy pass, and lets you ignore lances and mounted past getting Pass to get some nice healing magic, and while she's certainly no armor knight, she's a bit tougher than a lot of other good candidates for the role.
My Bernadetta was very bad in my Silver Snow playthrough, because I promoted her to cavalier instead of to archer, where she could have gotten the Hit +20 skill. In my Crimson Flower playthrough, I promoted her to archer first, then to sniper, and bow knight, where she did noticeably a lot better.
The Bernie B-Support was too dark? THE GAME IS DARK! And I love it.

Bernadetta's very interesting from my standpoint. As someone who went through similar parental circumstances as her, I feel like she is a scarily accurate interpretation of a mindset marred by parental abuse. I got chills reading her Byleth C support self-deprecation because I had been exactly in her shoes in the past - I know how that feels... But going off my own personal experience, this type of paranoia and anxiety that Bernie displays is something that, realistically, should be kept internally rather than externally - I don't see how someone like Count Varley wouldn't get upset at that, which would lead to Bernie learning to keep her fears to herself (as I did).
At the same time, though, writing her in a more subtle fashion runs the risk of the general public completely missing aspects of her character. Ignatz is a great example of this, in that his writing is done in a subtle, realistic manner, but he isn't half as popular or notable - arguably because this isn't done prevalently. Bernadetta on the other hand, by being more clear and external in this mindset, becomes easier to define, at the cost of being potentially annoying to some or "badly written" to others.
You would think Bernadetta is the most hated 3H character if you just went by Mangs comment section lol.

Bow Knight doesn't have Strength and Speed penalties, it doesn't have much in the way of growths (which doesn't matter much since you're already past 30) but it actually gives the same +1 Strength bonus as sniper (one lower than Paladin's +2) and +1 Speed even while mounted, Which is 2 higher than Paladin and Sniper doesn't get a speed bonus. If you make her a bow knight and then just dismount her and never get back on the horse,then compared to sniper she trades 2 Dex and 2 Luck for +3 Speed, +1 Defense, +1 Move, and +1 Bow Range.

Bernadetta seems like one of the characters the developers put a LOT of thought into. Her growths by themselves are very underwhelming, but then they purposefully give her an amazing and unique tool kit of rare spells, Crest and personal ability, so it entices players to want to use her and be rewarded for investing in her. I don't know if it was on purpose, but this tells a narrative that investing a lot of care into Bernadetta is the way to make her shine really bright

Great job with the video Mangs and honestly when I bought my copy before the patch, the original line hit me in my heart but then after the patch and the line change, I still understood Bernie's problem. As it is, I don't really know what to feel about the line change other then just a shrug but I may use Bernie differently in my NG+ run.
My Bernie got strength screwed in my first run and I didn't like her from the start. It didn't help that my Ashe and Leonie got strength, speed, and Dex blessed

Speed screwed, she ended up with 16 Speed at the end of the Crimson Flower Route. She was only useful because she used a bow where many Falcon Knights spawned in. Only Byleth, an under leveled Shamir, Ignatz "Let Me Paint You A Picture", and Ingrid could hurt them.
I don't know what happened. She flopped so hard that every time I moved her into an enemy's line of sight, she usually ends up dying and doubled on attacks.
I like to make Leonie my paladin, best cav unit imo by far

I do agree that her having so many support routes is a bit much, especially since most of her C ranks are basically her misunderstanding whoever she's talking to and freaking out. I have heard arguments that she has the THIRD HIGHEST number of supports to reflect how she wants to make friends at the monestary, but I feel like that is just too many. I can definitely see some interesting dynamics between Bernie and students outside the BE (mostly Ashe, Mercedes, and Sylvain from BL and Ignatz from GD), but it definitely feels like a stretch after a point

EDIT: got a couple C Supports with Bernie and, so far, only the one with Byleth was weird (conversation's going well until Byleth randomly brings up overhearing Bernie singing and the latter flips out). Dorothea's was actually pretty organic with Bernie expressing her desire to be friends, but getting PTSD to what her dad did to the last commoner she befriended and Ingrid was more the crazy one in their C Support (oddly, that one seemed to work since Ingrid is used to dealing with Sylvain's shenanigans and wasn't aware of Bernie's PTSD, so a stronger hand makes sense for her)
Something you didn't touch on is how she learns Deadeye, that thing is SO good. Gives her insane range super early, and the most beautiful thing is that even if it misses, it will still aggro the target to make them come to you like an idiot. I remember doing that to the boss of the bridge chapter in non-CF routes, it's very funny
She's also the only character aside from Claude to get Encloser, which can trivialize monster fights or render any enemy useless, and Vengeance but that's kinda memey
Her having a talent in lances also gives her very easy access to pegasus knight, which is arguably the best T2 class. The low strength is an issue, but I feel like people overstate that a bit too much in general, it can be circumvented pretty easily: batallions give really good bonuses, you get _faire skills, you can get DB by going through brigand, or just use good weapons. I remember at the end of my BL run Ingrid had 23 strength at level 37 and she was ORKOing stuff just fine. Though that said, she isn't that great, that shitty base speed and defense really hurts her, especially in maddening, but I think she's a super interesting and fun unit and that probably plays a big part into why I like her so much
(and yes she must be protected)
Oh and something that I found super touching is how in the everyone is sad month, she comes out of her room to put flowers on Jeralt's grave. She's the girl who's afraid of everything, but she still finds the courage to go do that, like come on that's the sweetest thing ever
And you see her try constantly to get better and that's super endearing

This was really good. It's thanks to your video on Fernie that made me realize that he's not as bad as I originally thought. I honestly look forward to seeing these sorts of videos. And you doing one on Bernadetta makes a lot of sense as there are parts of her character that many might miss. I don't mind the support change but I wish that they kept the context that she was tied to a chair to become a good wife in the new support as without it, the context is kinda missing. I do think one of the characters you could do a spotlight on next is Ashe, the Blue Lion's archer, though I really wouldn't be mad if you did someone else cause these videos shine light onto things about these characters some may miss.

I have not beaten a single route yet, but my Bernie is an amazing Archer and a Sorceress, having blizzard and thoron at early levels balanced her out amazingly especially once I got a magic bow to capitalize on that too.
Bernie is great! Well, I like her as a unit and she is a more tragic character, and her design is great. I like purple, so her having that in her design is appealing to me. Though, when she's on the battlefield, she is a monster. I don't have the need to "protect".

I remember my first CF playthrough, Bernie was faring the same as Shamir in the battlefields. But then I've noticed that yeah her stats are lower so that was quite a surprise.
I’m personally a fan of her A rank with Felix, if only because it takes place in the form of a montage, showing that their relationship has a persistently positive effect on her day-to-day life.
I relate to Bernadetta a lot. But rather than being groomed to silence for marriage, I would sit silently while my family would fight. Now I'm a messed up dude with social problems, and I h8 myself. So Bernadetta is a character I see myself in, I think more people should give her a shot

My absolute favourite support pairing in FE3H is Bernadetta and Raphael. Raphael treats Bernadetta and her PTSD with kindness and patience, things which she wasn't given much of in her early life. He offers to help her and she slowly opens up to him and eventually people around her. They eventually have a picnic together, where Bernadetta isn't very anxious at all. She gives him some food she cooked, which Raphael really enjoys. Bernadetta offers to cook some more for him and they hope the war ends soon so she can cook some more. Raphael cooked for his little sister so I can imagine cooking in the kitchen with Bernadetta. In the paired endings, Raphael guides Bernadetta to come out of her shell and she becomes much happier because of it. It's also a massive kick in the face for her father because her father hates commoners.
I somehow got a strength blessed Bernie that puts Pent to shame. She punched through paladins and Great Knights with ease with a silver bow.

Good review. I definitely had a blessed Bernie who was rolling over the Crimson Flower lategame as a Bow Knight, but there was certainly some luck involved. Good levels early have that snowball effect, after all. I sent her from Noble to Soldier, then Archer-Sniper-Bow Knight.
I did Black Eagle Church Route for my first run, and I made my Bernadetta a Sniper and then a Bow Knight. OMG she was my most powerful character after Byleth!!! One-hitting like everything! (And easily doubling everything! I got really lucky with her level ups because she had high speed without ever getting any speed item power ups. I did give her a speed increasing ring though). Add to that her great distance and being a mounted unit, then I would generally use my Dancer on Bernadetta and just destroy every enemy. As to her character, I found her annoying at first, but her sweetness and abusive backstory won me over. (And her supports with Felix had me laughing to the point of tears)
As someone who was abused as a child and went through years of crippling social anxiety and borderline paranoia as a result, I personally do NOT find Bernadetta relatable at all. That being said, I understand where they were trying to go with her. Her C supports are some of the worst thing in this game, they're not funny and they're so god damn irritating. I am glad she blossoms after timeskip though, it's a small redemption.
I did find her C support with Hubert to be really funny tho

I think the issue is that they tried to draw attention to her but also tried making her the butt of countless jokes, they didn't do justice to the type of person she's meant to stand as a representative of, ESPECIALLY in her C supports

Bernadetta is my waifu in three houses, but I understand your opinion. That also makes me ask, how good was Bernadetta on your playthrough?
I really liked Bernie as a unit when I played, then against I cultivated her as a Lancer, not as an Archer... My first playthrough took her to paladin and kept her there honestly. After that since I used her so heavily in a Frontline role, I wanted to supplement her defense for future playthroughs so I put in a TON of work and made her an Armour Knight for Pavise. Now with Pavise and Aegis, I have a super speedy tank of a Frontline unit that I can handily take as a Falcon Knight for some high mobility high speed doubling/tripling with her skill. Add on the jewel that Mercedes gets from her paralogue (with the appropriate NG+ crest item) and she had 2x the chance to proc Pavise/Aegis AND nulls Flyer effectiveness, throw in the Death Knight's Lance from the same fight and she's a terrifying powerhouse who is super hard to hit and will only take 1 or 2 damage when she is hit.
Not as dodgy as Petra, but one of my best Frontline units by far
i accept that bernadetta has flaws... she isn't the greatest character in all of three houses, but she'll always be my personal favorite... i've had extremely crippling anxiety for a while now and it's made my life so much harder... socializing with others has been extremely difficult and i'm terrified of dissapointing those around me... and it's difficult to even go to school... i relate to her struggles in so many ways, from a fear of parental/authority figures, and irrational mental breakdowns... and it's really nice to know that there's someone out there like me ^-^... and i'm sure there's many others that share the same struggles... so even through all of the community backlash, the terrible s support, and all of the drama surrounding her c supports and censored b support (wow bernie really got the short end of the stick when it comes to supports), she'll always be my favorite character
also she ended up getting some really nice growths in my first playthrough (blue lions) and after giving her a few strength/crit rate boosting items it completely made up for any flaws she had. and when i gave her the failnaught and magic bow? yeah she kinda became the best unit on my team... ashe did incredibly well too, three houses archers are my favorite incarnation of archers in all of fire emblem, and i hope ashe, bernadetta, and claude too will do well in my golden deer playthrough :D
To put it bluntly, I love Bernadetta, as someone who has a lot of anxiety and who thinks people hate them I can understand Bernadetta though the familial issues are something I don't have which is a blessing unto itself.
I can only guess how other people experienced Bernadetta, but I’ve never recruited her before the Eagles routes and I was pretty excited for her. But I agree that her C supports were tedious, so much so that I skipped most of them during the Silver Snow route because I didn’t want to sit through them again. She’s grown on me, though, and I intend on recruiting her again during my second Deer route.
Utility-wise, she’s walked the same path both Eagles playthroughs, namely archer-sniper-bow knight. And I gotta say, if you give her some luck boosters to counteract her low luck stat, she crits almost everyone aside from armored units. Even without crits, Bernie was a heavy hitter (although lance-wise she didn’t do much for me), who was perfect for making waves along the battlefield and Deadeye-ing enemies who couldn’t hit back because she was out of reach for them.
All in all, I’d rate Bernie a 7/10, she was a lovable character to me, but by far not my favorite from the Eagles.

Her crest only activated once.... and it was a crit. I was like, ‘oh, that’s what her crest does?’
I tend to make Bernadetta a Falcon Knight with Pass and keep her using bows. It takes a lot of investment, especially for Sword C Rank, but the combination makes for the most versatile chip-damagger of the whole game. Give her a brave-bow and the combar art "Encloser" for even more utility and stage control.

On my Black Eagles playthrough, Bernadetta was really good. I went the archer-sniper-bow knight way and I never had any issues dealing damages to ennemies(was on Hard/Classic). I even managed to forge the Parthia and gave it to her. Oh boy she was so good at murerding everything with that bow+her personal skill. I definitely think you can be RNG screwed with her though, that would explain why people are so divided about her saying she's really good or really bad.
My Bernadetta was the sniper on my team. I literally nicknamed her the sniper. She has gone so many critical hits other then my character and a few characters on the black eagles. She was taking enemies out left and right. Bernadetta is one of my favorite characters to use in the entire game. She’s so good.

For me, Bernadetta was an absolute beast on the battlefield, sniping anyone in her way.
you're not wrong in that, if you play your cards right, she will become a second Lysitea(vANtaGe) or a second Dimitri (wrath, vantage)
Bernadetta is by far my favorite character in this game.
She is someone I must protect, no matter what.
Fun story: On Verdant Wind, during the Blood of Eagle and Lion Chapter, I actually made sure that I avoided Bernadetta. It made her the second most bothersome element in the Chapter (the other being Felix) but I wasn't about to kill someone who seemed like she didn't want to be there.

Personally, for me, what really makes Bernadetta click for me is her growth.
While she never fully gets out of her anxiety (something she even admits to), I find it cool to see how she does warm up to others over time, as she's able to converse with others much more easily in Part 2 compared to Part 1. That moment where she gets out of her room to put flowers on Jeralt's grave is honestly one of my favorite moments of the game, and showed me just how much of a sweetheart she is once you get past her anxiety problems.
And at the least, I do find her behavior reasonable. If she was paranoid and easily frightened for no reason, I could understand those who don't like her, but that isn't the case. Her supports pretty much spell out exactly why she tends to assume the worst when others talk to her, hence why I pretty much never laughed whenever she freaked out. The execution isn't perfect, but I still think she's a good character for those who struggle with anxiety to relate to.
As a plus, Erica Mendez gives one of the finest vocal performances in the game with her, which is saying a lot given how excellent Three Houses' voice acting is.
She also voices a gorgeous mysterious waif, but has the unfortunate karma of voicing a garbage princess who should die in a dumpster fire.
