I have a Teac X-3 purchased on 8-27-1982 for $329 and it still works fine, that's 34 years. The Teac X-3 offers wow/flutter 0.06% (7 1/2 ips), signal/noise of 49dB's, THD of 1.5% and THREE motors ( 1 drive and two reel). Also has two tension bars for better tape control, and push button controls for functions (much smoother than mechanical switches). At 3 3/4 ips I can record one and a half hours on EACH side of the tape (UD 35- 90). Talk about long playing! Even without Dolby noise reduction the sound quality is still great, especially for rock music where tape hiss isn't as noticeable. These figures are from the HiFi Engine web site, please feel free to check out the facts. For a beginner Reel To Reel buff, this is an Excellent deck. I have an article on the X- 3 as reviewed by Julian Hirsch in Stereo Review Magazine that helped me decide on this unit.
It's not too difficult to maintain an X-3. You really need a good repair shop. NOT to fix it, but more to give it a "check up" every few years. I've had mine serviced three times in the last 34 years and it's not very expensive. It is cheaper than waiting till something goes wrong and needing repairs. Believe it or not the BEST way to maintain the X-3 is to just use it! I run mine at least twice a week (frequently more) it sort of keeps things moving inside. This might sound silly but it works. Good for cassette decks too. The best cure is prevention. I live in up-state New York and have a good repair place, 'Stereo Workshop', this guy is ace's. Seek out a place near you. NOTHING lasts forever but your components can last a long time, with good care.
@Marty Jewell....I could not agree more on running this machine here and there for the machine to either work out kinks by using it, etc. To me, it is similar to a used car...Why? Well, because if you let you're car sit long enough, things you would not want to occur, tends to occur, for example, tires start to flatten and other issues arise from sitting too long similar to vintage equipment. I like to take my care for a joy ride, ONLY on the freeway with no stops, which cleans out the car, so to speak, AND you're vehicle tends to run more soundly in the end by doing this say once a month. One hour up and one hour back to your residence. Believe me, my father taught my this tip back in the late 70's when I was a kid. Thanks Marty !
i have a teac x-3 as well and it does a weird thing where the internal amplifier shuts off than turns back on, so the vu meter lights shut off and there no sound and then it turns back on what is that?
@@vintage-wb5gq, just saw this post. Could be a short?? Does the deck get hot while in use?? I'd suggest a good reliable repair or restoration shop. Does FF/REW/PLAY work as it should?? It is a fine open reel deck, love mine.
I just added one of these to my repertoire of vintage equipment, and after a bit of professional TLC mine's working every bit as nicely as yours is. I trust yours is still working well after all this time? You simply cannot find better machines than these!
Nice unit. Just got one that needs new belt. Once that's done, I'm hoping to have one as nicely working as yours is here. Good choice in demo music. Any issues with it since the making of this video?

Marty Jewell , It's good to know. May I know how you maintain this machine?
Thanks
