Quest has such a love and knowledge of music. His questions are insightful and you can feel the mutual respect with him and his guests. …By far my favorite podcast.
The Deele played in Columbus Ohio a few times at this club on Main St. (Larry's East or later called Ashley's). They were all the rave with their costumes, curls and dynamic vocals w/ Face. I remember like it was yesterday.
Dear Team Supreme. Thank you so much for the many many many, great conversations and interviews. Please don't stop until you have a talk with Quincy (again) , "The Godfather" Clarence Avant's Biographer, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock,Frankie Beverly, George Benson, Evelyn "Champagne" King , Marcus Miller, Nile Rodgers and Tarik Trotter "Black Thought".
Does anyone realize this is probably the greatest and most significant interview ever done in real music history... A staple in the middle of a whole music revolution... Bananas
Recently finished reading LA Reid's book and having grown up in Cincinnati it's fascinating what was happening in the 80s in the midwest.....arguably the most important region for the birth of modern music with the Minneapolis sound, Chicago house, Detroit techno, and Cincinnati Funk/R&B
I enjoyed this so much man. LA has produced many of my favorite artists and songs throughout my young adult life and is a major reason why I feel in love with music and became a producer. The stories were fantastic, and I LOVED what he said at the end about the barrier to entry.
I'm from Ohio too. I'm always playing music out of Ohio for my sons. We lived in Indy for a while and they have famous black people from Indy on the wall including Baby Face. My youngest plays piano, drums and trumpet. So I'm always finding music for him
This Meeting Was A GREAT Meal For The Mind And Soul. Mr. Reid Was Very Candid And HONEST With His Responses And Because Of It I Flat Out Respect And Honor Him As A Music Fan And A Human Being...Great Show Quest And Co.
I agree with your comments here, but what do you think about the ballad " Dry your eyes " taken from the same album. This track was very underrated in my opinion.
Great interview dynamics! Well-structured with good questions and insight on the power of instinct, and creative process and decision-making in the music business, throughout his own career, and in general! Worth watching every minute - ‘old school’ LOL @Quest, didn’t even realize it’s almost 4hours! Much appreciation & respect!
Very informative indeed. Always proud of young men who can bring you up to date about their lives in a exciting way. Your Mom must be very proud of you and your children. Thanks for sharing
1:43:30 Always wondered about that snare sound! I knew it sounded familiar and then one day YEARS ago while listening to Control, I thought to myself, is that where L.A. and Face got that? My question has been answered!!! Such a classic LaFace trademark even if it was borrowed from Jimmy! 👍💜
i don't what yall talking about but the ritual of love album that jimmy jam and Terry lewis did for karyn white was a smash the way i feel about you and romantic was both top 10 records
I loved this interview. I'm Your Baby Tonight is my absolute favorite Whitney Houston song. Getting the backstory on their work with Jermaine Jackson thoroughly explained some things that I needed insight on lol.
It's interesting to hear how that album "Dirty Mind" was so captivating. LA Reid was influenced by Prince and his Band back then. When I first saw the album back in 1980 I was also impressed with the Album cover. Although like Quest I didn't start exploring the album until after Purple Rain hit.
Dirty Mind and Controversy were both trendsetters in their own lane when he created them. We were in Boston when he died and there just wasn't a collective vibe about the history of Prince - it was a lot of pop stuff after he had already crossed over to pop music.
It's crazy my dad loved the uptempo funky stuff from The Deele, and hated the slow ballad Babyface stuff lol. He even loved Babyface uptempos on his solo album but hated the ballads.
I Dug This Interview With All My Heart. Growing Up With Atlanta As My Capital Hearing His Name Gets A Highly Honorable Salute. I Even Used To Hear My Momma And Her Friends Speak On The Deele When I Was Younger
The record label conversation at the end is interesting. Going independent is kind of unrealistic cost wise unless you come from a rich family. The artist needs the support of the label to blow up
So essentially Hip-Hop began in Ohio based on James Brown albums being created here, and Bootsy Collins, and Zapp and let's keep going.....all those records were sampled and played by DJ Kool Herc
In the 80s he was getting $100 a night. $600 a week is amazing for anyone no matter the age, especially in the eighties. That was way more than the average wage back then.
Great interview but I wish we heard from about the start of LaFace records with Damian Dame (and their passing) and what plans the label had for their sophomore album.
Am Looking At This Interview La You And The Group Had Too Video For Two Occasions And Shoot Up Movies I Remember 🎵 Quest Love Good Show The Gemini Man NYC📀📀
There’s NO such thing in the entire entertainment industry as the little guy from the bottom making all the way to the top of the mountain PERIODT👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽!!!!! They either pick you and have you go through intense development or it’s flat out nepotism because celebrities don’t just have children for no reason those children are written into their contracts( at what point and time to get pregnant) everything is well done within the confines of this well oiled machine 🤬🤬🤪🤪🤷🏽♀️💁🏽♀️💁🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️!!!!!
I swear 😂 LA has a history of picking the wrong songs and not initially gambling on the Right talent.... 😂 He almost didn't sign some of the people he signed 🤣 He has had others around him that have helped him for sure God bless him
This interview could have been so much more productive and interesting. Too much screaming and hollering, too many irrelevant questions and most of all not critical enough. We all love LA Reid but he messed up a lot for many artists! Why not talk about that, too!? Too many lost opportunities to segway into legendary careers and people: For example he mentions Shalamar and no one segways to Jody Watley’s iconic solo career !???? C’mon man…C’mon.
LA seems like a cool dude, but he is exposing himself as being a mediocre exec/a&r/producer. He rode babyfaces coattails, picked the wrong songs, basically stole more money from tlc with the 3 video debacle, P!nk…he was not responsible for the moves she made…P!nk did that herself after the first album. Dropped the ball on Tierra Marie, was NOT responsible for Rihanna. Basically he has been lucky more than anything.
Questlove. Bruh. Why u think u gonna get the same treatment from a label as TLC or Mariah? Huh? All love but lord help us with u inserting yourself as an equal to some industry giants is really played out.
Quest has such a love and knowledge of music. His questions are insightful and you can feel the mutual respect with him and his guests. …By far my favorite podcast.
I’m amazed that a man like LA Reid has almost four hours to talk about anything other than business. This is truly a must listen.

Mr. Reid Thanks for taking a chance with Kast...Im from Atlanta and back then we knew they were Atlanta legends. Much respect

The Babyface interview was good as well. That guy is HILARIOUS!!!
This interview, with LA Reid-Wow. Thank you.
The "Eyes of a Stranger" album....you gotta start it off with those 3 as crazy as it sounds. Shoot Em Up Movies is a masterpiece.
I agree with your comments here, but what do you think about the ballad " Dry your eyes " taken from the same album. This track was very underrated in my opinion.
YESSSSS
THAT was unbelievable!

If I could get ONE of these wonderful people TO JUST LOOK AT MY WORK... Life changing.

Why am I just seeing this ❤ simply beautiful interview

LEGEND!!!
I always stop and go listen to the song when Quest asks the "earliest music memory" question. There could be a playlist of just those answers.
@Jae My self as well

I'm hip!!!
Same here..wow!

Great interview. Quest you know your stuff🙂
Amir... Please get Frankie Beverly on. We need that in order to bridge generations.
absolutely love these interviews! I read LA's book. Great stuff!
I read it also, so so good I dont think I've ever read so many pages in like a week
Love seeing Quest kicking it in the big room
The record label conversation at the end is interesting. Going independent is kind of unrealistic cost wise unless you come from a rich family. The artist needs the support of the label to blow up
the legend in the house.
Fantastic interview ✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿
That was a amazing speech . Please joy come home
Dope interview
Much Gratitude
Suga Steve needs to ask at least 1 question.
I agree..Did he not want to be there? It's so obvious something was going on. Not a good look.
favorite podcast with favorite executive! incredible insight
My best memories of the music run.
How did Quest hold the mic for 3hr?? Must be Drummers strength !!
So essentially Hip-Hop began in Ohio based on James Brown albums being created here, and Bootsy Collins, and Zapp and let's keep going.....all those records were sampled and played by DJ Kool Herc

Super Dope interview
would you consider ""Eyes of a Stanger"" a ballad. We were dancing to that one because it was semi upbeat
In the 80s he was getting $100 a night. $600 a week is amazing for anyone no matter the age, especially in the eighties. That was way more than the average wage back then.
Jimmy Jam & L A Reid ♊️✊🏿
If you listen to James Brown's I feel good (I got you ) it is a song called Caledonia
?uest, Tion has a book coming out :'-) ...¿ Why don't you have her on the show?
@Theroots Can you please interview Shanice Wilson?
LA Reid @ 1:12:28 😆😆😆😆
My friends. Cameo what's the first major artist to relocate to Atlanta and establish themselves. Everyone else followed afterwards
Great interview but I wish we heard from about the start of LaFace records with Damian Dame (and their passing) and what plans the label had for their sophomore album.
Did LA say Rick James wrote Square Biz for Tina Turner at the 48:30 mark??
Yeah, def a slip
He did not like that question about TLC having to pay for all 3 vids lool Shout out Laiya
That sorry brotha Reid KILLED REAL HIP HOP...Eff that guy...NEXT
What’s Suga Steve’s role? lol
Mint Condition is a dope band!
Hard Work “pays” off
LA ""Cant get enough of that Funky stuff"" by original Kool and the Gang was tight. However Shes Fresh was a monster by the 2nd version of Kôol

Yup….
Say what you will about Ms. Millie but she was hip hop before hip hop was. Def Jam meets Soul Train.
"Most moisturized band of all time...." bahahahahahahahahahahaha
I think usher is beyond Versus. Sit it out.
Boy I bet after Outkast first album with Andre 3000 change he almost sh*tted on his self La reid

C’mon man…C’mon.
What did Jody Watley’s solo career have to do with LA Reid tho? He didn’t work with her, why would they discuss her?!??
The Deele was bad band ! I really hated that those Albums didn’t sale. They also put on a good show

Really disappointed to see you guys interviewing LA Reid after Drew Dixon accused him of sexually harassing her. Who’s next? Russell Simmons …
Mint condition is also a black band. Come on now
