It's extremely unique and really not something we hear in video games right now,. The armored core series has such a distinctive sound and while most audiences will know fromsoft as the dark souls folks, it's really exciting to go back to form with the game that really helped them become the fromsoft we know now.

Fun fact, the reason why Armored Core's music is so unique is due to the fact that their composer, Kota Hoshino, is _self-taught._
This is the final boss theme of Armored Core: Verdict Day, where you're facing down a man who's lived so long on a battlefield that he can't imagine a place for himself in a peaceful world. At the end he's fully willing to let the world burn so long as he can keep fighting.
To quote the man himself: "There is no place for me other than the battlefield. To live as I please, and die a senseless death. That is who I am. Not a mere man of flesh. War is part of my existence."

J was such a crazy boss fight. Getting to that mission and basically seeing the evil twin of White Glint charging at you was something else. Seriously, seeing the N-WGIX/v and hearing Mechanized Memories brought back so many memories from playing the hell out of ACFA. Of course, the true treat came during one of the updates several months later when something much larger returned... (and I still hope that they bring THAT back again in Armored Core 6)

J's a very Twisted character. from all the killing he done, to how he toyed with Magnolia and twisted even her perspective of life, turning her against us and forcing us to kill her too.
i think by the point we meet him he's just looking for a way to die, on the place he call home, by the one he deems "worthy" the so called "chosen one" he was looking for through the game. and as he said, everyone that died up ti that point was him simply culling the numbers. i just detest what he done to Maggy tho. its too cruel. may be he told her that if she managed to beat him, and kill us too, J would let her be free, because he'd be dead. and she went absolutely insane over that thought. because J is the man that destroyed her life. he even ripped her arm off during their last battle, making her unable to perform what she thought was her reason at life.
may be this whole music is what J's feeling when we put him down and FatMan asks him "there. you're happy now?" and in his dying moments J realizes all he done. and its terrifying.

    • @osakanone
      @osakanone ปีที่แล้ว +51

J is like an echo of a man who died 100 years ago running in a computer. He's not allowed to die, like the Dixie Construct in Neuromancer and its something he utterly hates. He's so warped that a lot of what he says comes out as nearly delirious because so many concessions have been made on this digital echo that he's incomprehensible, even to himself. The "fantasy" is that he's a "real" person, and he gets just enough waking consciousness to recognize what he is and just like the Dixie Construct, they hit the reset switch and he's robbed of his realization of self-awareness of his condition and he's left with a sense of confusion, malease and his mind becomes slightly more corrupted and warped by the process of keeping him controllable.
The final time you see him is when he literally removes his off switch, and wants you to kill him so he can finally die, but his programming won't let him self-terminate so he fights back. "Rain" (AC4), "Fall" (AC4), "Remember" (ACFA) and "Mechanized Memories" (ACVD) are all his songs, and they go from when he was a man of flesh to the current moment.
There's a fairly strong chance that Joshua Obrien/ AI J is actually Nineball's origin story in earlier games later in the chronology.

In Armored Core 4 a character named Joshua O'Brien - a fellow Raven - nickname 'White Glint' is shown to be an upstanding mercenary and treats your character with a high degree of respect. However by the end of the game the corporation which is in charge of his unit has him pilot a monstrous super mech against you and attempts to have you killed as your character presents a serious threat to their carefully manipulated power balance. After you defeat him and the game ends your character apparently takes up his moniker and forms a new colony in an attempt to uphold his desires to protect the people and do generally good things.
In Armored Core For Answer, you are playing a new character entirely, but 'White Glint' shows up again, and no matter what choices you make, he dies. However it isn't quite so simple. It is apparent that the corporations which survived the previous conflict worked together to ensure that no matter the outcome 'White Glint' would die. This also included a betrayal by the very faction he was protecting.
In Armored Core V, the *shadow* of 'White Glint' appears once more as the final boss and it is revealed his entire psyche was copied and implanted into another monstrous mech, and he is forced to do the bidding of a super AI which has been doing what the corporations from 4 and For Answer were attempting to do all along, maintain a ceaseless conflict from which no peace could form.
The original version of this song plays in that fight. To me this song represents his internal fear and disgust. The righteousness, the good are both stripped away, and all that is left is a monster who can only comprehend battle.

An important note to consider is that you the nameless pilot in AC 5 (game this song is from) is essentially this un-killable nightmare that defeats foes piloting crafts that SHOULD outmatch yours in everyway and give you no chance of victory and yet you still defeat them with RAW SKILL alone. Your allies fear you, one even comments on how everything you touch turns to ash. Your enemies fear you as if you are the mecha pilot equivalent of the doom slayer. Hell there even these hyper intelligent combat AI that can't compute how a human pilot is able to achieve the level of combat ability you have. The song also has a LOAD of call backs to early game music, appropriate to call this mechanized memories for sure as it gives me callbacks to another nameless pilot who single handedly takes on mechs the sizes of literal cities called arms forts. One of the melodies is a straight up mimic of the melody from the arms fort boss fight sprit of motherwill but sped up a little. I really hope they tease more of the old game soundtracks in the same way in AC 6.

Oh I'm so glad you reacted to this song! Other comments have mentioned this, but it is actually a remix of an earlier Armored Core song, "Remember" from AC: For Answer. That song is commonly associated with White Glint, an opponent who was trying to ask you the reasons for why you fight (a core theme of From Answer's story, what is your "Answer"?). The White Glint itself was named after a machine used by the pilot's deceased friend, Joshua O'Brien, whom they themselves had to kill in the finale of Armored Core 4.
This song, Mechanized Memories, is associated with the final boss "J", and his machine that is actually a salvaged and repurposed White Glint. You pretty much hit the nail on the head, as the character is coming to terms with his role as a soldier and part of the war machine, as well as possibly being either bred or engineered to be the next Joshua O'Brien/White Glint. The song is as much a culmination of J's character, as it is a corruption of Joshua and White Glint, a symbol of fighting for what you believe in, reduced to just another destructive element reducing the world to ruin.

Story of Mechanized Memories is sang when fighting N-WGIX or J for short. J is a clone that has the memories of previous pilots who are at the best or peak at their height. Like in the picture of the music, you see a white mech is named "White Glint" is piloted by one best the pilots, and human plus augmentation since they can survive more than 9 G force that an average human can only withstand, since every ACs can move at Mach Speeds so suddenly and the "N-WGIX" is sometimes called the Black Glint in the community because they have keen resemblance. Well, after the defeat of W.G someone stole the blueprint of it, tried to replicate it and that's the result.

It's not human plus augmentation, human plus only exist in AC1 and AC2. The right answer is AMS system (AC4 universe human plus equivalent) that allows the pilot to control the mech directly with their thoughts and alllows them to survive over 9Gs, the difference between them is Human plus require surgery in order to take effect, meanwhile AMS is already installed into every Next's Core

I listen to alot of the work from Armored Core 4/4 Answer, 5, & Verdict Day like musical poetry. The feeling of these songs is really fascinating.
Obligatory re-iteration that "Mechanized Memories" (Verdict Day) is a remix of "Remember" (4 Answer), which itself is a remix/sequel to an Armored Core 4 song "Panther". If you're doing Armored Core themes as well, you should listen to "Someone Is Always Moving On The Surface."
It's really bittersweet, a piercing use of the piano. I don't quite know how to best describe it. The notes sound warm and you get the feeling the intent is to invoke a sense of hope; but the song in it's entirety seems hollow, like the hope is intended to mask a feeling of pain. The pace of the piano is quick and the chorus swells, but it rings empty or broken.
A good metaphor would be wearing a smiling mask to hide the fact that you're crying. The song's delicate and powerful and lonely, poured together into one.

While the specifics may differ I think you have the right take on this. The reason I say that is because the player (from Armored core for Answer) will ultimately eradicates a significant portion of humanity and thus I think your take on the moment of realization is a strong one. Also the “oh I’m scary” is also likely to be the realization of how the main character has become “scary” as the killer of mankind. The final portion of the song has another track from for Answer mixed, and it’s chanting “amen amen, gospel, amen” which may be an internal prayer.

    • @Aoenias

What I find REALLY interesting about the Armored Core For Answer endings is that there's basically 3 main endings:
      1. Execute the Closed Plan with ORCA to liberate space travel once more but doom Earth to a grisly death due to the League arranging amnesty for their leaders prior to the Closed Plan and now getting to abandon Earth with the elite and take all its resources with it, leaving no refuge for the lower classes due to you destroying the only sustainable arcology Line Ark and leaving only the highly toxic/radioactive kojima plants. Also only the elites get to escape so all the other slightly less wealthy people now die from illness since they never adapted to life in the surface pollution and the Cradles have been forced to land due to you rerouting all their power and destroying the control system.
      2. Stop the Closed Plan with the League and maintain the status quo, allowing the wealthy to live in bliss upon the Cradles a little while longer before the kojima plants that keep them afloat start to pollute the upper atmosphere as well, ultimately dooming all of humanity within generations when the surface dwellers can no longer survive and maintain the plants and nobody moves into space. But at least you saved Wynne's family.
      3. Destroy the League. Destroy Orca. Destroy the Civilians upon the Cradles. Become the greatest monster in history, eliminating anybody who could possibly stop you. And yet, Line Ark still stands, the anti-satellite battery still stands. Technically the pollution of Earth has been halted dead in its tracks (upon the blood of the Civilians it was sustaining which you murdered), a sustainable refuge remains for some (though Line Ark does not have the capacity for everybody and will likely degrade due to overpopulation and corruption introduced from these changes), and the resources to liberate Earth to space travel remain intact for future use (though arranging for their reactivation will likely lead to future conflict as humanity briefly cooperates to make them functional and then immediately struggles over who gets to utilize them). Arguably the best future for both the Earth and Humanity given the choices, but at far greater immediate Human cost. There was no "good Answer". It makes me cry but makes me think about our own future and how to create alternate Answers.

AC fan since gen 1. Here's a couple of songs/tracks that might be good to listen to.
AC Master of Arena - 9
    AC 3 - Artificial Sky 1
AC 3 Silent Line - Silent Line
    AC 4 - Mr. Adam
    AC 4 - Thinker
AC for Answer - Someone's always moving on the surface
AC for Answer - Spirit of Motherwill
    AC for Answer - Remember
AC for Answer - the Answer
Armored Core 1 through 2 has this heavily techno oriented sound and since Armored Core 3 onwards has gotten more orchestral, save for Armored Core V and Verdict Day. Only odd OST for Armored Core is Formula Front since that game is basically Armored Core combined with Formula 1 Motorsports.

Remember - On Your Memories reprise from the anniversary disk is another awesome rendition of this tune.
As for this song in particular as someone who started with gen 4 AC hearing this song reprised as a frankensteined version of the 4th gen tech swooped in was like a Soul of Cinder moment for AC fans. So much emotion.

Judging by all their previous reveal trailers the music they had in the TGA will be their new direction. Dark synths and heavy electronic. The theme we heard in the trailer might even be the main menu theme. I fucking loved the new trailer. The music was so alien and gave me such an strong sense of dread, really fits the post-apocaliptic, war torn future world these games are set in. Im really looking forward to AC6, though personally I hope they slow it down from 5. Haven't played any of them but when I decided to look at gameplay the pace of old AC games seemed way more up my alley than the crazyness of 5.

The theme of Fires of Rubicon (I'm just assuming) is indeed impressive and the main reason I've re-watched the trailer more than a few times. Not having payed attention to AC since the PS2 era, I've never seen the grit of brute dirty mechs clashing in what feels like the end of the world be represented so colorfully through music. The whole thing is elevated into the robotic uncanny, and I feel it actually touches into broad themes of the cyberpunk genre where humanity is dissolving into the destructive cold fire of bellicose machinery.
Considering the screenshots from the leak, AC6 might indeed be the most atmospheric and aesthetically gripping AC. I'm very much excited for it.

Something that used to be symbol of peace and heroic (White Glint). Now becoming a monster who destroy and disaggregated everything that it walk through (the second phase of the fight)

Armored Core is the one of hooks that first got me into Fromsoft games.
One is Tenchu, and the other one is Armored Core.
It was so different, so difficult, to the point of me wanting to give up.
But the game mocked me, taunting me with all the cool stuffs that I can get and become, if I only moved a little bit faster, turned a little bit better, and shot a little bit quicker.
So I put a little bit effort into it, and I was reeled in.
_Master of the Arena, Silent Line, Nexus, Ninebreaker, Last Raven, 4, 4 Answer, Verdict Day._

It's incredibly interesting you see the death and changing of the pilot into something scary in these lyrics. In the game AC: for Answer, the main character dies in two of the endings and in the third he/she literally becomes death it self. Killing 100 million people in a single mission and becomes unstoppable by the end of the game. "Some called it the Dark Raven". So your read on the lyrics is spot on. You either die in the game or you become something that has zero humanity left in them. And these lyrics are really sad if they are the internal monologue of the pilot.
Love this theme so much!!! I can't wait for AC6. I hope you will cover that music too

The rest of the lyrics could be about Armored Core Verdict Day, where Mechanized Memories play in the final boss, which is a callback to the main mech of Armored Core For Answer.

So, there is a part of the Armored Core lore, that certain pilots, either by choice, or through extenuating circumstances, are directly wired into their Core, this is usually referred to as HumanPLUS, though AC6 calls it "Augmented human", and in AC6 it's heavily implied that every pilot is HumanPLUS.
AC4/For Answer uses a similar method for NEXT pilots, called Lynx, known as the AMS, or Allegorical Manipulation system, in which only people with latent psychic abilities can be pilots due to the mental strain the AMS places, which in high level pilots, can be nothing more than a minor headache, or in lesser pilots, things like nose bleeds, nausea, burst blood vessels, aneurysms...
So, yeah, you could argue that J, who is either.. the barely alive corpse of Joshua O'Brien from Armored Core 4, plugged back into the cobbled together remains of his best friends mech from For Answer, or an AI made from a scan of his deceased brain, just.. wants to get out of the monster they turned White Glint into, an act that will kill him, regardless of his circumstance.

This music is the music of the final Boss , J , a myth and a legend just as much as out mute-psychopath pilot is , he as lived through countless wars and even said himself
« There is no place for me other than the battlefield. To live as I please, and die a senseless death. That is who I am. Not a mere man of flesh. War is part of my existence »
And my personal theory to why is it the reoccurring theme in this music is of pain , fear and fantasy is that J is the ‘’rookie lynx’’ the pilot of AC4 for answer. where you have there ending and one of them is the devastation path where you destroy the flying cities of mankind housing half of humanity and kill five elites pilots in high grade NEXTs ( the name of the mechs ) single handedly ,
You are monster of a man , you destroyed the world and the fantasy that humanity was and left it a warring hell scape and in that world he is the incarnation of apocalypse and death
Parts his mech literally comes from the white glint , a symbol of hope for peoples that fought for their own freedom against ‘’elitist parasites’’ and to get that said path you have to fight alongside the white glint to defend line ark ( a group that fought against the established power « the league » )but in the end WG is destroyed and you are the only one remaining of that battle and you obtain the mech for yourself that you can use for yourself
I haven’t played AC5V but I have looked it up a lot to write this , you can also assume J is for « Joshua O’brian » the first pilot of the white glint who himself had to be killed by the mute pilot , the mercenary of Anatolia, and by doing so he endorsed that name and became a legend
It is like a cycle , the knight in shining armor defeating the mighty dragon ( and his 50 fucking missiles ) and being renowned for his prowess as THAT MAN that slayed the evil to become the hero long enough to become the evil that will be slain

To be honest, when I initially played ACV/VD, I didn't get to hear music when I played it initially which drastically changed my take on the game, as I thought it was intentionally music-less. In hindsight, it was either a read error or something else that caused it, so it wasn't until more recently that I got to hear the music from these games. I didn't dislike ACV/VD, though. Playing them without any music gave a strangely solemn experience, and the mission in particular was quite scary too, especially given the design of the enemy in particular. Hearing the music meant to go with it, it's good to know that the music didn't depart from the music sound design of V/VD's predecessors'.

One theme I always enjoyed about Armored Core is that of always improving yourself, with every munition you use and any damage you sustain it will be deducted from your pay to repair and restock your mech at the end of the day. You take any job not only to survive and maintain yourself in that post apocalypse but to also upgrade and improve your mech with your hard-earned cash, the missions will get harder and deadlier as your reputation grows. You learn to adapt and improve every mission either by not wasting ammo needlessly, bringing the right armaments for a specific mission, or by better taking advantage of cover or your mobility to avoid damage all in order to get higher payouts. All that cash is used to further customize and improve your mech according to your needs, knowledge, and playstyle preference and by the end you will have a reflection of all your improvements in a tailor-made Armored Core that you can call your own

This song is like a 4th wall break, and like you have mentioned, realization.
But it's a lot more like the state of realization rather compared to coming to one. Later AC titles played on an Especial pilot on the field (often you, the enduring wayfarer) . A eureka moment lived in the present, "Oh I'm scary"
As a player this is a zen moment. When we both become into confidence and awareness un our build. The same confidence that allows us to see we are going beyond survival, and able to see the 'battle picture's for ourselves.
This also matches the indirect storytelling AC is loved for. We become scary because we become the stuff of legends in the moment.
I'd say the different lyrics are like the different directions and what you can come to this point, just like your machine coming from different directions, but you come the 'scary', because you can now see things differently and it's like a fantasy.
Turn that now you can shape your memory.
(Ironically the very first garage song is Shape Alloy Memories,
    Malleable yet memorable...
AC tends to be quaint in this way)
Nice of you to take a look at this series, music in AC has shifted roles, but always aimed at this quality of fondness. Warmth being with the player in this cold setting.

On the latest gameplay trailer for AC6 the song that plays during the battle with the big robot with the burning blade arms sounds haunting and interesting, like a machine screaming. I don't think there's enough out yet to make a video on it, but I expect it to have some amazing music.

I'm actually excited that FS is making an AC game after 10 years, I think. I'm more of a mecha fan wholeheartedly, but I do appreciate the soulsborne that FS has made for a good while. It's just great to see they're touching back on one IP

6:05 - 6:09 really nails the point of the song. This song plays at the end of Armored core Verdict day, after the player has fought their way to the end of a long war, only to find that theres just another war waiting for them, they don’t want to be a soldier anymore but that’s been the future set out for them.

Yes this plays for the boss in Verdict Day that is essentially a NEXT from the previous game 4/4a that has been cobbled back together. The pilot, J, is a clone of other skilled pilots, bred for war. So pretty scary to fight as the player and probably scary for J to realize your only purpose is war and your only home is the battlefield.

@@theneoncatangelist iirc, J is more specifically implied to be a clone of Joshua O'Brien, the pilot of White Glint in AC4

Imo, I am very much in love with this song. The confusion, chaos and realization theme of the song, the abstract lyrics compared to the in your face “Oh I’m scary”… This song is that of someone who’s been a war for so long that all he knows is war. Song’s niche, but very good.

excellent content as usual ! Now, I'm too poor to donate or sign up for patreon, but I'd stil like to request that Marco have a listen to Guts' theme from Berserk, maybe even analyze it. It's one of my favorite pieces of soundtrack and strangely fitting even for such a brutal character and manga as Guts and Berserk respectively. Thanks so much !

This is a remix theme to an AC Pilot/Bossfight Armored 4 that appears in 4 Answer.
The boss pilots a AC that is made up of parts form his own and his implied lover. (whoes theme this is a remix of.) He's incredibly mentally unwell due to her death.

I read the lyrics like a popular mecha trope, in which the pilot enters some unique kind of mech that consumes them, but gives a huge power boost for a short time. The song is basically about that final leap. "So I'm scary" -- he lost his humanity and now is a metal monster, no going back. "All is fantasy" is talking about the delirium state that he's in because of stress, both physical and emotional, or maybe some traumatic event. "Look into the void, it's scary" -- the pilot doesn't want to die, but there is some higher purpose that's worth it for him. Also this line kinda compares the pilot and the void.

I've never played Armored Core but this song is amazing. If i'm not mistaken, this is a remix of a song from the sequel of the 4th AC game (,,Remember"). Hope they re-use it again in the AC VI, it's really good!

Mechanized Memories is a song that was remixed in pretty much every main armored core game. Part of the reason why it's so disjointed here is this is basically 3 different songs mashed together. Still fun watching ppl get confuzzled over AC lyrics.

Armored Core music has always been “vibe” music to me, less about lyrics and more about energy and mood of when it plays during the game.
