interesting to note that the album version is 96 BPM. this live version is 100-102+. maintaining relaxed 16ths like Jeff Porcaro does w/ the right hand was tough enough at 96...this is no friggin joke here ! what a groove monster.
+Scott Hiddleston my guess is north of 110 bpm. Jeff was a RH hi hat phenomenon. I am imaging he worked this from a young age w/ his musicals Dad/ family's help. Check his VHS video on TH-cam where he describes coming up w/ a drum parts for some tune I think at 108. Then the last tune is 102. Great.
So true. I'm 40 years old now, still drumming as a hobby. This song, godamn, this song : first time I heard it, I thought it was two handed, appears to be simple, then I saw videos..... that speed and feel : so hard to play with the same kind of groove....
Incredible drummer, one of the coolest things about him was that he provided a canvas for the rest of the band to paint on while still beautifully putting his mark on the song. The result was a Masterpiece.
I'd disagree. Look at Bernard Purdie on Home At Last, Steely Dan. He said, flat-out on the Roseanna instruction video, he stole it from that one and John Bonham, Fool in the Rain. I think it's almost more impressive that Bonham did it. He was a massive powerhouse, not much for finesse, and definitely not that often sober. Also, JB's timing is all his own. God help you if you tried to play Zep with a metronome. Lol. That means, too, that JPJ was one HELL of a bassist.
Jeff had that amazing deftness in his right hand. I asked him once about Mornin by Al Jareau that he played on. He said that track was first take. Beautiful artful drum performance. I asked him how he got his hands so strong. He said 'Awe my hands are shit man'! RRIGGHHTT!!
…hey Phil. Speaking of Al Jareau.. his live (only, I think) version of “Blue Skies” with Peter Erskine on drums was done on the first take. That’s according to Pete himself. Talk about smoking! 160bpm!
Of course it's Jeff on Mornin'...omg!! I never knew that and listening to it again. Jeff had the greatest grooves, which makes that song so spectacular!!! And the first take? WOW. Thank for mentioning this!!
Mike at his peak post Doobies and off the skunk - he is still great live today but during this period he had a stella band and would often pull in friends such as Jeff and the great Robben Ford on guitar. Jeff sadly missed.
Ah, my favourite drummer. Next year would have been his 60th. I hope his boys know how amazing he was. I am his age. I have 3 daughters the same age as his 3 sons. The little one just turned 21. I am a grandma too. How that man was robbed!! Does anyone know who the bass player or the singer is? She "kept forgetting" when to come in. I guess anyone except Patti Austin would feel intimidated singing next to Mr. McDonald! I know.... Chaka Khan. Patti Labelle.... I stand by my original remark. Haha.
I wander why it feels so much better played with just one hand on high hat. It's something most people don't feel but we do as musicians. It's just better with one hand I don't know why??!
Brian Baker Most drummers are right handed so they s Hit harder with that hand. So a left/Right pattern will be louder with the right hit. All right handed makes it even sounding. Look at Jeff’s video, he explains it.
I found it screechy. I would have gone with Carly Simon, or Merry Clayton (Stones, "Gimme Shelter" the screamer: "Rape! Murder! It's just a shout away!" She cracked her voice on the record, too).
lets not forget the genuis( and I use that accolade rarely),Jeff Porcaro. Check out all your favourite records and see how many Jeff plays on. you will be pleasantly surprised.. Clue : Steely Dan , Boz, Bobby Caldwell,Need I say more ?
right on brother!!!! as my pic shows im a bassist of 15 years and all the lights in the world went on in my head when i heard his drumming on the brothers johnson classic..."i want you" from the album "winners". hes been in my alltime top five ever since.pretty much most 80`s drum parts were played by jeff or directly influenced by him. i play bass to steely dan and all my toto catalogue every april 1st and play till twilight as a birthday celebration.hes the man responsible for "the groove" on micheal jacksons "beat it" as well as the album "thriller" and many, many more.like you said duncan...a "GENIUS". you can bet hes behind the kit for heavens house band! :) R.I.P JEFF PORCARO...DRUMMERS DRUMMER!! X
Merry Prankster I recently heard an old AT40 from 1982. Jeff was on FOUR tunes, including this song, I.G.Y, The Girl Is Mine and Dirty Laundry. And the week after, he was on 5 when Africa debuted. He was incredibly prolific, especially in what's called "yacht rock" nowadays.
Merry Prankster I've never been called a 'brother' except by my brother! What a nice thing to say. I'm a funk( I'd like to think jazzy) guitarist but have always loved drums and bass. I see you like Victor who for me is the greatest since Jaco.I also see you like the Crusaders who are one of my all time favourite bands. I only ever saw them in 1996 at a small club in Newcastle upon Tyne (UK) and had the pleasure of meeting Wilton and Wayne at the after gig sign the new record(casette)/meet. Thanks for your comment.
Better late than never, look up where he "Stole" Rosanna from "Home at Last" Steely Dan/Purdie and Fool in the Rain/Bonham. He says this on the Rosanna instruction video. It was adorable how he says it one way and plays it another!
The year I discovered Marilyn Martin, on a blind purchase of her then recent album, This Is Serious, featuring many well known studio and touring musicians, but oddly, not one Toto member ;).
@smilzomagro hell yeah ! JP was the master of these quarter=100 sixteenth note grooves. not too many guys do this, they switch over to alternating RLRL...not like JPs insane RRRR technique w/ the push/pull thing w/ the wrist pivot. he must have practiced this all the time or just "evolved". this is like maintaining eighths at 200 for like 5 minutes. and it's so loose & solid he can lay the bass drum perfectly in the groove. genius.
I think you're bouncing at least 2 out of 3 hits here, tho i know exactly what you mean. Bill Cosby, as stupid as he was, had this bit about playing drums and wanting to impress a live band. A PROFESSIONAL jazz band let him sit in.AS A DRUMMER, then knocked him out if the water immediately after playing blues all night. Lol. "Cherokee." It's insane. VERY fast on the ride. He was talking about how his hand started to cramp and I fell on the floor laughing.
@@raylombardo4186 02:30 in the top right, you can see his left hand on the snare drum. Sixteenth notes played at this speed are insane especially with this groove!!
Love Michael Mcdonald you could tell the vocal strain he was facing at this point he still had the amazing upper register but how much touring was he doing it looked like an insane schedule

Definitely Porcaro. From 2.29 to 2.35 there's clear sight of the drums and everything about the drummer's appearance, body language, hell, even the way he plays the hi-hat, says 'Jeff Porcaro'. What a guy - sorely missed...
There's isn't enough video of Jeff Porcaro playing live on TH-cam 😩😭😭
... Amen
Yeah... We just have some Toto live show to watch...
He died ☹️
That’s no lie
Little to none with decent quality.
Jeff's grooves could float a boat. He even spanks his crash cymbals with feel. RIP Maestro.
As Fagen said, he had that popping sound.
The best drummer.......ever
Certainly in the top 10 but ahead of bernard, DG and JR, & not to forget Richie Hayward, the GOAT term should not be thrown around lightly
Steve Gadd
There they go...lol
The best

Well, than again, Toto does tend to play their songs that way, too. Remember the song "Stop Lovin You?"
Jeff Porcaro, Mike Porcaro and Carlos Vega in my heart !!!Thiago from Brazil !!! Shannon Forrest my new hero !!!
It just doesn't get any better does it! Music as a whole has suffered since we lost Jeff!
true that

Louis Johnson plays bass on yhe studio version. Jeff+Louis=🔥
Wow, what a performance. You can see Jeff's big glasses and huge smile even with low resolution and Dan Huff is enjoying himself pretty good too.
I love every version. That 70's and 80's were great. I could live it all over again!

Unbelievable and memorable--Michael McDonald, Marilyn Martin and Jeff Porcaro!
Jeff+Louis=GOATS
Jeff PORCARO graet combination with MM
Michael McDonald played with toto earlier this year. Jeff did play the drums on the studio version. JP played on over 3000 records.
What a legend he was... Still lives on in music and our hearts to this day
I wanted to be Jeff Porcaro when first started on drums, at 18. Now I am 49 pro drummer. Still wanting to be Jeff Porcaro.
What a ride my friends.
❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊

I love this 16th note groove, the bass drum pattern is unusual but fits the song perfectly.
Steve Lukather in the shadows with that deadly rhythm part
Dann, Jeff, Marilyn Martin, Michael......what a gig!
jeff had a prodigious hand, I recommend the video teaching
Damned funky! Everything in this video is just extra-class, highest level, phantastic band, supreme drumming, awesome singers.
Jeff will always be my favorite drummer.
I have such a love and respect for Michael McDonald, what a great guy he is!
He always was so modest and said he could barely keep up those sixteenths. He did it like every day for years lol. He was the groove master.
Caro Jeff quanto bene meraviglia Jeff porvaro
Michael Mcdonald is still good to this day.
Is this the best version of I Keep Forgettin' live perfomances? Jeff killin' that 16th hi-hat notes
Wow this song is amazing, i didn't know Jeff did the drums on this and Michael's voice is so awesome :)
Excelente con Jeff Porcaro en la batería.
Steve Lukather en guitarra en la versión original de estudio.
Awesome live performance, not many singers can do this live this well anymore. It used to be the standard.

Yes, he was very sexy when he explained Rosanna one way and played it another. :) I thought it was extremely cute!
The female backing vocalist might scream late 80s more than anyone I've ever seen :)
That’s Marylin Martin who’s best known for “Separate Lives” her duet with Phil Collins from the movie “White Nights”.
I found it screechy. I would have gone with Carly Simon, or Merry Clayton (Stones, "Gimme Shelter" the screamer: "Rape! Murder! It's just a shout away!" She cracked her voice on the record, too).
Jeff's groove is heavy
I miss Jeff every day.
haha, at 1:10 she's so immersed in the music and Michael's singing that she misses her cue :-)
hansonis27 well the song is "I keep forgettin"
hansonis27 And the she keeps fkin up by singing Michaels parts smh
anthony paturzo Your right haha
TheSolidheroes she can make all the mistakes she wants and no one would probably care! She’s hot and can sing! Who is she?

Jeff..

marilyn martin, the chick who sang seperate lives with Phil Collins. She also did a BV tour with the guy with fedora, BObby Caldwell.
I was just rackin my brain and then I read your comment I knew the voice and your right.
Dann Huff on guitar!
Best live-sound in history!!
Westcoastmusiclover I can't really hear the drums, personally...
The sound is not the best, but I love the athmosphere.
@hansumjoe
I think it was Marilyn Scott that toured with Bobby Caldwell
Love this female singer, any idea who she is??
So, I wonder i the rest of this show exists somewhere!
Yes, of course there are more songs but the entire concert is not here.
Killer performance of everybody. Except the female singer.
yes Mr Jeff Porcaro in Drums...
@edcollante I think its his Wife Amy Holland !
Thanks for uploading
1:07 She forgot to sing "I keep forgetting".
Ironic
She kept forgettin’
God the band sounds so good
@Calatafimi I think it's Marylin Martin.
yes Dan Huff on Guitar
i was thoroughly immersed into this live version until this woman killed it for me...
Yes, she did that for me audio wise. Not visually, but.....anyway.
I have to agree. She's kinda missing the point and the vibe of the song. It needs to be sexier.

Nathen East
Louis Johnson played the studio version
LOVE this. Who is the girl singing??
0:00-0:16 and 2:28-2:30
That's why we will always miss your fuckin badass groove :'-(
@Calatafimi Correct!
Marilyn was a powerhouse too!
is jeff the girl dancing b/c there is no cameras on drummer?
Is it dan huff on guitar?
@Tjottirotti yes Dan Huff on Guitar
You can make him out behind Marilyn at 1:01
