I wonder if central African kingdoms would be influenced by Ethiopian culture. And if the crusader kingdoms try and make contact with this Ethiopian empire as some form of alliance against a common enemy. Even if not, I'd imagine much more Ethiopian mercenaries present in the crusader armies.
@Mø Nälayé So were many others. Byzantines had their own interests, as did Armenias, and the principality of Antioch. Didn't stop them from working together. Hell, the crusaders tried to form an alliance with mongols till it blew up in their face. So it's likely Ethiopia and the kingdom of Jerusalem would form a casual alliance knowing that they'd be weakening a common enemy in different areas. This especially could have happened during the rule of Baldwin the 4th since reynald was doing raids in the red sea. In fact the kingdom was going through a succession crisis trying to marry sibylla or her half sister to someone competent. Considering that kings of Jerusalem regularly married foreigners from byzantine empire and Armenia. It wouldn't be suprising if a competent Ethiopian Nobel or general was a candidate to form an alliance.
@pokezee king-wolf But if in this hypothetical situation. The Ethiopians would still have access to the red sea and would frequently use it. There is no way the crusaders states wouldn't make contact with this Ethiopian empire, especially during Baldwin's reign.
@D B There was Ethiopian mercenaries and soldiers in the crusader states, that's true. But in this hypothetical situation Ethiopia would be much more powerful and connected so the number of Ethiopian pilgrims and mercenaries would significantly increase compared to our timeline.

I don’t see how the Muslims would allow such a powerful Christian empire to emerge so close to Mecca. A better play for Ethiopia maybe to expand west and take over the Sahel. They would have a transcontinental empire from the Arabian Sea to the Atlantic, or at least to the borders of Mali. Nobody is going to bother them for a long time
One thing that would not happen would be the occupation of Abyssinia by the Italians as both Eritrea and Italian Somaliland would've been controlled by Ethiopia.
Well, I got a little list here: *Visigoths -* They were a corrupt and weak kingdom around that time, so weak that an Arabic raiding party made them collapse. they would either go through a dynastic change (peaceful or otherwise) or some Frankish venturer would claim the throne (happens more than you'd expect). *Ostrogoths -* Justinian and the Lombards sealed its doom in the end, and it was mostly controlling Italy because Odoacer's Kingdom of Italy was universally hated by everyone. I doubt it would stay Gothic, maybe a mix of Gothic and Italian culture would appear which would dominate the ruling class and lands around Ravenna (where the kingdom was founded) similar to how Lombard culture came to Italy. *Ukrainian Goths -* They would just be a minority like the Tatars. *Crimean Goths -* They were the least impactful in history but survived the most. They probably could conquer all of Crimea and unite it under a mixed Tatar-Germanic-Pontic Greek culture. Expect a duchy that would be a pain in any local empire's ass by continuing to ally others for that sweet balance of power.

How about just kyushu, let's say the shimabara rebellion succeed. Lets say some sympathetic Europeans decided to use their ships to supply hara castle with food and maybe some decent weapons. From here the Japanese government might figure the fight isn't worth it and decideds to have Kyushu be a puppet state, absolutely loyal but able to govern themselves (like legalizing Christianity) the rebels would probably take that deal.

During colonialism Ethiopia (or may be it was called Ethiopian Empire) did sought to become a significant non European/western power in geopolitics & was apparently taking inspirations from the Empire of Japan. If that had succeeded instead of them having to deal with Italians on their border may be things could've been different. Even today if Ethiopia had coastal access & consisted the territories of Eritrea, Djibouti & may be also Somalia (all of whom has common ethnicity with parts of Ethiopia) their economic growth would've been much greater than it is now.
What went wrong??? Why couldn’t Ethiopia be successful like Japan??
@@danielyeager6666 From what I know they didn't had a peaceful time like Japan did to start industrialisation.
@Mø Nälayé
So were many others.
@pokezee king-wolf
But if in this hypothetical situation. The Ethiopians would still have access to the red sea and would frequently use it. There is no way the crusaders states wouldn't make contact with this Ethiopian empire, especially during Baldwin's reign.
@pokezee king-wolf
Didn't saladin use nubians soldiers in the third crusade?
@D B
There was Ethiopian mercenaries and soldiers in the crusader states, that's true. But in this hypothetical situation Ethiopia would be much more powerful and connected so the number of Ethiopian pilgrims and mercenaries would significantly increase compared to our timeline.

Sounds like Ethiopia in a strategy game. Their best chance historically would've been getting tech from Portugal (basically like Japan early on, until they got tech from other countries as well), and industrializing from there. Not sure if they have good access to farmland for industrial agriculture and iron for ships and weapons though. This suggests Ethiopia will be a super power again in the future.
Let's not forget that the Christan Ethiopian king named Abraha, was almost successful in destroying Mecca in 570 CE -- as documented in the Qur'an (Surah 105, Al-Fil).
Its said that many men will try to take the treasure under the Kaaba, and between them an Abasynian called Dhu al Swaiqatain will take it. It doesnt mean that they'll become a super power especially that the prophecy said that this will happen in the end of the days and after the destruction of Arabs and when all the muslims are gone.
ATSE SHADE, Abraha attempted to distroy the Kaba without success. Indeed his strong army (with elephants) was obliterated as the following Qur'anic Verses from 105 Chapter (The Elephant) relate in detail:
HAST thou not seen how thy LORD dealt with the masters of the elephant?o Did he not make their treacherous design an occasion of drawing them into error; and send against them flocks of birds, which casts down upon them stones of baked clay; and render them like the leaves of corn eaten by cattle?

They have An abundance of gold in the north and I think Ethiopia would be a dominant AFRICAN power if major decolonization happened like our time line
I made a timeline where I made 2 dominant powers in Sub-saharan AFRICA. The east African federation and Nigeria. Don't let the title fool you. I SWEAR THIS IS NOT A TROLL th-cam.com/video/1Pt5Xu8Ebbw/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for discussing my country’s history I love your content
I don’t see how the Muslims would allow such a powerful Christian empire to emerge so close to Mecca. A better play for Ethiopia maybe to expand west and take over the Sahel. They would have a transcontinental empire from the Arabian Sea to the Atlantic, or at least to the borders of Mali. Nobody is going to bother them for a long time
The prophet muhammed warned his followers to not attack Ethiopia although some of them didn't listen and attacked Ethiopia
lol in the sahel there we're other great african empires such as kanem-bornou, songhai and mali, it wouldent be that easy.
It's strange that China never discovered beaurocratic warfare considering how powerful beaurocracy was there
And they also have one of the best theoretics on warfare.
Which shall be a what if.
Ethiopia will be superpower very soon
I always get excited whenever you make a new video
One thing that would not happen would be the occupation of Abyssinia by the Italians as both Eritrea and Italian Somaliland would've been controlled by Ethiopia.
Eritrea was annexed from Ethiopia in our time line
Love to see this updated in a few years once the dam in online
What if the Gothic kingdoms survived?
Well, I got a little list here:
*Visigoths -* They were a corrupt and weak kingdom around that time, so weak that an Arabic raiding party made them collapse. they would either go through a dynastic change (peaceful or otherwise) or some Frankish venturer would claim the throne (happens more than you'd expect).
What if someone travelled back in time and killed Hitler?
Matt Nalty HELL MARCH INTENSIFIES
That can't happen I mean if it did happen it would create a time loop !
@@zelekaassefa1814 Wow!
I'm inclined to think that Ethiopia could industrialize in this timeline, as long as it didn't get a Sykes-Picot sort of affliction. But my understanding of why some countries caught up to the West and others didn't is pretty rudimentary...
Geography and technology are factors.
The Ethiopians didn't have their own patriarch until the 20th century. They were subject to the Coptic patriarch of Alexandria in Egypt.
You never answered the biggest question though. Would the Solmonic Dynasty still be in power? I would assume yes, but if you had asked anyone in 1946 if the solomonic dynasty would still be in power today most would probably say yes. how could a government that successfully survived European colonialism, had successfully reestablish itself after exile, and generally loved by it's people fall away? But I guess that's what makes it so difficult to know "what if" or predict the future. you can never account for every detail.
No the axumite would've continued to rule the country
Now that I think about it, you are right about Ethiopia being the African Armenia
Yes we are not black but Semite peoples same as Arab that's why the call us Africas Armenia
@@christiannb8232 you're the African Italia
@@ngn6708 its true Ethiopians mostly speak a semitic language
7:51 but Ethiopians were africans, not outsiders. The reason central africa was deadly to europeans was because europeans didn't have immunity to the diseases of central africa for the same reason native americans weren't immune to european diseases. Ethiopeans had lived alongside central africans for most of human history so even though their society wasn't regularly ravaged by the diseases they would most likely have much more immunity than europeans.
No, Ethiopians didn’t have immunity. Why do you think they expanded into Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Eritrea, in ancient times but never into tropical Africa? They wouldn’t even have faced resistance but the diseases were a death sentence and no outsider could live there.
@@kingmisssile9730
The terrain is a good reason why no power disease immune or not could expand/build empires in equatorial africa. That doesn't mean Ethiopians were not immune to the diseases.
Ethiopians are genetically speaking a mix of three groups namely native east African hunter gatherer, natufian(levantine origin) and early iron age southarabian none of these groups developed an immunity against malaria while Bantus and other groups did , even the native component was mountain dwellers unconditioned to tropical life .
@@kingmisssile9730 lol ethiopia are black africans with the sane geneitic makeup, ethiopia simply did not want to as simple as that. The british themselves at their peak needed a whole century to beat the ashantis i doubt ethiopians could pull that off im saying this as a african who loves ethiopia.
@@AMR_k400 lol there is not natufan in their DNa stop making stuff up dummy.
great video love the good energy, music, maps, you did great
I find that hard to be alive that could happen, modern Ethiopia can’t hold together Oromos Tigrayans Agra’s Somalis and Amharic peoples I don’t think an empire would be able to do it especially with holding Yemen and Oman to. The pride cultures of Arabs Swhillis and Somalis would easily be able to repel within a few decades and this would bring these people’s together in response we would get a east Africa with dominant Somali Swahili and abasynian.
Yeah this is rubbish
No u see amharas and tigres were created after the fall of axum ,and currently in Ethiopia nationalism is rising so tribalism wont be a problem for long
No such thing as arab swahili, swahili is a black african culture.
What about the Crusades? Wouldn't the Ethiopians help the Byzantine Empire's fight against the Ottoman Empire?
The time is coming...you will be the witness. All roads will lead to Ethiopia!
This makes me want to play an EU4 Ethiopian EU4 game.
That whole taking yemen and dominating trade seems like a good strat but I think the meta is rushing for the Kilwan gold mines near madagascar. If Ethiopia decided to liberate Egypt from the Mamluks they would've had a easier time industrializing with access to European tech.
You own TWO ties!
Really enjoyed this timeline
I think you'd be interested in a video I made. It's basically the 1940s- present greek version of this timeline. I don't make Greece a super power but I do make it much richer, much more powerful and I expanded it's borders to the size of tunisia.

See, that's how you make an edgy joke. You mention that it's a joke right away, instead of leaving people guessing, and *then* saying "oh it's just a joke!" when you're called out on it.
I had never even thought of this before
Ethiopia did industrialize in the 20th century. You need to study Haile Sellasie bro!
Yep- Ethiopia was on its way to becoming a developed country like the European powers - that was until the dumbass rice-eating Fascists invaded the country.
subscribed a couple of months ago, i really like this channel, but would have never guessed u made a video about my country.
WHAT IF BRAZILIAN EMPIRE SURVIVED?
Something you didn't mention was that Nubia was also a patchwork of Christian kingdoms that didn't convert to islam till the 1500s. A strong Ethiopian ally and reading partner next door would likely stave off the influence of Muslim merchants that were the catalyst for This region turning majority Muslim.
It would be interesting if South Arabia and the East coast of Africa was christian
