    When you mentioned Richard Osterlind, I thought, “That’s a good recommendation. Richard Osterlind and Banachek are the only Menatlists whose stage performances didn’t bore me.” …And then you mentioned Banachek!
    Solid recommendations and guidance with this video.
    Both Osterlind and Banachek, (both are really, really nice guys, too, by the way), are partially responsible for me expanding my magic to include mentalism.

    If you’re going to get 13 Steps to Mentalism or Annemman’s Practical Mental effects, I would highly recommend getting Richard Osterlind’s companion DVD sets. Seeing the effects performed to a real audience by a professional is a huge help.

    "Viewers Questions" is an inspired spin off and that was a masterclass to kick off. Wholly agree with almost all of your recommendations and can only add "Magic and Showmanship" by Helman Nelms because to paraphrase Msr Robert Houdin - and the thing that separates Derren Brown from a legion of imitators - " A Mentalist is an Actor playing the part of a Mentalist".

    Perhaps a top 10 types or principles of mentalist effects? Book tests, bank night, seven keys, Tossed out principles, one ahead, the miscall. Each of these categories can be its own top 10 or 5 list. Top 10 bank night effects, top 10 princess card effects (I use this as a closer-email me if you want), top ten book tests…

    I'm still a beginner, but I definitely recommend 13 steps for beginners. Epecially that encyclopedia version. Maybe it doesn't have all the best tricks and presentations, but it gives a lot of knowledge about the history of mentalism and of methods and way of thinking. Really a great way to start.
    Other recommendations are great too. I still hope that one day I can get my hands on the Derren Brown one. Prism by Mac Maven is on my wishlist.
    Only missed Phill Smith in your list. Great tricks and decks, and the passports!And Mythology Codex is just insane, but maybe a bit pricey for a beginner.

    Hi David, as regards mentalism books, I've not had the opportunity to read all of the books you mentioned. I did read HarpaCrown, but before I started HarpaCrown Too (i still haven't started it!) I read 'A Piece of My Mind' by Michael Murray and got a lot from it. At the moment I feel exhausted from mentalism and I'm playing with simple magic that makes me happy. It's the best feeling.

    Cassidy, Osterlind, Banachek, Corinda, Fulves, Maven, Anneman, Brown, are all great mentalists to start with. I'd also suggest T.A. Waters' massive book It's oop, and usually goes for exorbitant amounts on EBay, but I've seen affordable editions here and there once in a blue moon.

    My first mentalism esque marketed effect I learned was from Wayne Houchin's Stigmata... Banachek was also in the project. That DVD alone had me improve on aspects of performance. Together with Control... I have 2 weapons that could be a room filler. I still show up on my gigs with those 2 weapons till this day and age...

    • @acemcknaves
      @acemcknaves 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LK-uw9yb control is a simple method of a pulse stop effect. since the method is simple, you can focus more on your performance. I have done it even with nurses and doctors because of the Johnson Justification as discussed by Wayne in the project. This needs practice though but it is worth it. This is propless magic at its best.

    Is important to have a base of magic and showmanship to go to mentalism. Artful mentalism Vol. 2 has some inisights that I found very, very important for the mentalist. Is hard to pick one for start, but the magic is the base, you have to have a background in deception.

    Thanks for bringing this question to the table, certainly there is far more “ways to get started” in card magic than mentalism. There is no shortage of books, but I’m wondering if you could go one step deeper and suggest effects those starting in mentalism should begin studying? Is there an “ambitious card” of mentalism? A trick many suggest starting with. What is something a beginner can start performing for friends/family to get their feet wet in mentalism? Thanks again!!!!

    After watching the video (multiple times, lol) I was able to borrow a copy of Banachek’s “Psychological Subleties 1” and am loving it so far! Early on their is an effect called “Magician’s Choice” and in it, you are given two different methods (one from Teller) for when the spectator chooses a rolled up paper ball from a couple of rolled up paper balls with different names on them. Without revealing too much, I think Quiver or Quiver Plus would be great for this type of effect. When they choose, well… it could be Forced, and then you also show them that each paper ball (or Billets, whatever) had a different prediction written inside. Basically it would allow you to get the best of both worlds. What do you think? (I love Quiver & the Q+. One of my most used utility devices).

    David, the books you mentioned are all excellent, I have them all bar one, but (IMHO) They are 'second buy' books. I think you should have given a little more emphasis to the Fulves book "Self-Working Mental Magic". its cheap, available and is the bssis for so much more advanced work, it has to be a beginners first book.
