Mentalism is something I've been interested in for a while considering i lack the dexterity for much of the card sleights that are out there. thank you for this.
That's one reason I got into it
When you mentioned Richard Osterlind, I thought, “That’s a good recommendation. Richard Osterlind and Banachek are the only Menatlists whose stage performances didn’t bore me.” …And then you mentioned Banachek!
Solid recommendations and guidance with this video.
Both Osterlind and Banachek, (both are really, really nice guys, too, by the way), are partially responsible for me expanding my magic to include mentalism.
:D
was just looking for videos like this the last days, and just like that, you post a video about how to start in mentalism. ha, lucky me! Thanks a lot!
great ... MINDS think alike
Thanks for the reference suggestions on in and out of print books. I already have a few of the ones you mentioned but I'm always looking for other references. Osterlind and Banachek are two of my very favorites!
You are so welcome!
viewer questions is great thank you so much
Glad you think so!
Banachek and Osterlind. The two wings that fly you to Mentalism paradise
YES !!!
Thanks for the quick review and overview of mentalism.
more viewers questions soon
If you’re going to get 13 Steps to Mentalism or Annemman’s Practical Mental effects, I would highly recommend getting Richard Osterlind’s companion DVD sets. Seeing the effects performed to a real audience by a professional is a huge help.
Great recommendation !!!
Yeah I have Richards dvds and they are great!
Another great show! I am never giving up my copy of Pure Effect.
Rock on!
Great to see another type of video from you David! This was great! And if you're reading this and you're not a member, David does stuff like this over in the members section too ;D
Thanks for that!
Great video and awesome recommendations. This will help a lot of people , just put in the work and you will be amazed with peoples reactions.
:)
Re: the Cassidy book, he really hated calling it Vol 2. He just wanted it to be called Fundamentals, but the publisher wanted to take advantage of the original Artful Mentalism's popularity.
interesting
"Viewers Questions" is an inspired spin off and that was a masterclass to kick off. Wholly agree with almost all of your recommendations and can only add "Magic and Showmanship" by Helman Nelms because to paraphrase Msr Robert Houdin - and the thing that separates Derren Brown from a legion of imitators - " A Mentalist is an Actor playing the part of a Mentalist".
what a wonderful recommendation and comment
100%
Perhaps a top 10 types or principles of mentalist effects? Book tests, bank night, seven keys, Tossed out principles, one ahead, the miscall. Each of these categories can be its own top 10 or 5 list. Top 10 bank night effects, top 10 princess card effects (I use this as a closer-email me if you want), top ten book tests…
GREAT SUGGESTIONS
While it helps to have some performance experience with these, I’ve found the work of Scott Creasey and Lewis Le Val inspiring! 👍🏻
Lewis LeVal is amazing! Everything he puts out is gold - even his earlier works!
Jose Prager's material is so useable but is powerful to
Lewis Le Val is awesome! Really want to get his “Revelations” video.
I'm still a beginner, but I definitely recommend 13 steps for beginners. Epecially that encyclopedia version. Maybe it doesn't have all the best tricks and presentations, but it gives a lot of knowledge about the history of mentalism and of methods and way of thinking. Really a great way to start.
Other recommendations are great too. I still hope that one day I can get my hands on the Derren Brown one. Prism by Mac Maven is on my wishlist.
Only missed Phill Smith in your list. Great tricks and decks, and the passports! And Mythology Codex is just insane, but maybe a bit pricey for a beginner.
ANYTHING by Phil Smith - his marketed tricks - his books and his decks of cards !!!!
I like your book and theory/guide videos
awesome thanks !!!
Great video David 😊👍😊👍
Thanks 👍
Hope everyone is having a great day 😊
:D
Hi David, as regards mentalism books, I've not had the opportunity to read all of the books you mentioned. I did read HarpaCrown, but before I started HarpaCrown Too (i still haven't started it!) I read 'A Piece of My Mind' by Michael Murray and got a lot from it. At the moment I feel exhausted from mentalism and I'm playing with simple magic that makes me happy. It's the best feeling.
great to hear !!!
You read my mind :)
See, it's already working !!!
The booklets/books of George Anderson, Doug Dynent, and Bruce Bernstein are also great sources after you have the basics.
thanks for the tip !!!
Cassidy, Osterlind, Banachek, Corinda, Fulves, Maven, Anneman, Brown, are all great mentalists to start with. I'd also suggest T.A. Waters' massive book It's oop, and usually goes for exorbitant amounts on EBay, but I've seen affordable editions here and there once in a blue moon.
so oop
The man who knows how to amuse and mystify by Jose Prager is an excellent book as well.
Great reccomendation
I loved it. This is how I got started. I don’t believe 13 steps will « get you started » it will get you super knowledgeable though !
My first mentalism esque marketed effect I learned was from Wayne Houchin's Stigmata... Banachek was also in the project. That DVD alone had me improve on aspects of performance. Together with Control... I have 2 weapons that could be a room filler. I still show up on my gigs with those 2 weapons till this day and age...
nice !!!
Hi Coy, May I ask what recommendation is behind „Control …“ please? Thanks Jorn
@@LK-uw9yb control is a simple method of a pulse stop effect. since the method is simple, you can focus more on your performance. I have done it even with nurses and doctors because of the Johnson Justification as discussed by Wayne in the project. This needs practice though but it is worth it. This is propless magic at its best.
@@acemcknaves Thank you very much Coy for your answer. Best wishes, Jorn
Max Maven - Prism. Not overly expensive or complicated and still in print! :)
that's the book I was thinking of when I mentioned Max at the end - you read my mind !!!
@@magicorthodoxy hahaha awesome man, great video
Is important to have a base of magic and showmanship to go to mentalism. Artful mentalism Vol. 2 has some inisights that I found very, very important for the mentalist. Is hard to pick one for start, but the magic is the base, you have to have a background in deception.
I think that's how I approached this video - I think a total newb would start with the FULVES book
Hey, great video
Would you do a video like this for coin magic?
you mean how to get started? This book www.amazon.com/Modern-Coin-Magic-J-B-Bobo/dp/B008Z231GK/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=bobo+modern+coin&qid=1642007195&sr=8-2
Thanks for bringing this question to the table, certainly there is far more “ways to get started” in card magic than mentalism. There is no shortage of books, but I’m wondering if you could go one step deeper and suggest effects those starting in mentalism should begin studying? Is there an “ambitious card” of mentalism? A trick many suggest starting with. What is something a beginner can start performing for friends/family to get their feet wet in mentalism? Thanks again!!!!
wow if I was starting off in Card Magic - I would not begin with the Ambitious Card, but I get what you are saying
@@magicorthodoxy lol, fair point, but thanks for reading between the lines 😀
I want to learn those phone pin tricks and ATM pin trick and reading person tricks I noticed somebody else asked it too
Magic Question upcoming episode?
After watching the video (multiple times, lol) I was able to borrow a copy of Banachek’s “Psychological Subleties 1” and am loving it so far! Early on their is an effect called “Magician’s Choice” and in it, you are given two different methods (one from Teller) for when the spectator chooses a rolled up paper ball from a couple of rolled up paper balls with different names on them. Without revealing too much, I think Quiver or Quiver Plus would be great for this type of effect. When they choose, well… it could be Forced, and then you also show them that each paper ball (or Billets, whatever) had a different prediction written inside. Basically it would allow you to get the best of both worlds. What do you think? (I love Quiver & the Q+. One of my most used utility devices).
Great 👍 comment
David, the books you mentioned are all excellent, I have them all bar one, but (IMHO) They are 'second buy' books. I think you should have given a little more emphasis to the Fulves book "Self-Working Mental Magic". its cheap, available and is the bssis for so much more advanced work, it has to be a beginners first book.
agreed - I guess I was talking to the "magician" who wanted to "switch over" to mentalism
I want to learn those phone pin tricks and ATM pin trick and reading persons name tricks I noticed somebody else asked it too
Magic Question upcoming episode?
BTW way watched this video an when I visited the library I found pure effects by derren brown Awesome book 👍
I worry about alot of books going out of print as so often I hear someone say this is based on a Vernon(or other) idea but then I can't actually buy the book as it's OOP. Really wish they would either reprint or as least make these available as e books.
agreed
Hey David, you missed Phil Smith's Mythology Codex!
Absolutely one of the best 🔥
ANYTHING by Phil Smith - his marketed tricks - his books and his decks of cards !!!!
I would like to learn mentalism
there's a lot on my channel about how to do just that
In that context what do u think of the controlling minds kit from e ?
i'd say it's for more advanced performers
Simon Aronson for theory
any book in particular?
i have every ebook pdf of thoose
nice !!!! 👍
Hello which of these books reveals tricks like reading a name, unlocking a phone
For that should I read
What every body is saying, How to spy a lie, NLP Etc books
I am very confused these are book mentioned in some video to explain these tricks but others says these books have nothing to do with mentalism
I am a new mentalist and wanted to ask it would be of great help if you did .Thanks
there is no trick that allows you to truly unlock a phone with no prior knowledge of the code. They'd either have to write it down for you and you peek it - or the trick "looks like" you unlock it.
@@magicorthodoxy you reccomended what every body is saying in your previous video
What kind can be done with that?
Is any one here familiar with Daniel Fernandez? Is what he is performing called mentalism? It seems unreal
No book you mentioned is available on net for purchsse. Whats the use ?

@@magicorthodoxy magic orthodoxy you have answered 60+ comments but not mine why?
Mind Myth Magick?
How does "How to read minds" compare with "How to control minds" which is $30 more?????
Control minds is PROPLESS and I would say takes a lot more practice and experience th-cam.com/video/Pp4xGPa-hCk/w-d-xo.html
