Great job, and the passion with which James talks about foldable devices brings a huge smile to my face !

Old school telephones. If there were multiple phones in the home you could listen in to what was being discussed. The trick was not being discovered while eaves dropping. My trick was to hold down the button that connects the receiver to the device and to unscrew the speak into part and remove the diaphragm device and no sound would be detected from the instrument. Worked every time. I were always sneakin'. Especially if you were on a party line.

Can you imagine Jeremy Clarkson doing this? He'd last two minutes before smashing the thing to bits. 😂

This example might have been manufactured in the 50's, but this particular model of telephone is significantly older and was introduced way back in the early 1930's. At the time, it was one of the first telephones to incorporate all the necessary components in a single compact tabletop unit. Earlier tabletop telephones (such as candlestick types) required a seperate bell box mounted on the wall, which contained the bell motor, network coil and capacitor.

lord I love this series. It's like watching an indigenous person that grew up and enjoyed the way of life in the wilderness getting shoved into a big city like Seattle or smthn and after a decade of suffering through that horrific way of life experience (9-to-5 corporate crap env etc) getting back re-united with nature and the old non-electronics-driven life :))
It's not only calming and (ironically) refreshing to watch somebody enjoy the old but gold things again...makes me build more stuff again with my Dremmel in the shower cabin (cuz I don't have a house or a shed...so gotta make do xD) and inhaling soldering smoke and hot glue fumes 🙈

The German electronic band Kraftwerk HATED being disturbed when they were working in their recording studio in the 70s and 80s... they had a single telephone to their studio and they removed the hammer that rang the bell (see 28:05) so it wouldn't ring when it received a call ... they would only answer it once at a certain time of day, each day (eg. 3pm) so if you wanted to speak to them, you had to dial like crazy to get to the front of the queue ... they would pick up the silent phone receiver and sure enough, there'd be someone on the other end waiting to speak to them 🙂🙂

Yes, it was a bit silly on my part, but mistaking this for an original youtube thing is kind of a testament on how far this platform has come! TH-cam these days, and not even ONLY the bigger channels, have some pretty decently high standards of production!

I recon, the best job in the telephone factory at the time, would have been holding up the cellphone to iluminate the positioning of the dial screw.🤔

I've been watching this out in a work shop I built for myself while I've been fiddling with some organization issues and have about 3 current projects, all of them begun but nowhere near close to one (one of which is a guitar) on a desk which is over 100 years old and originally belonged to the founder of the library here in town that I saved from the landfill.
Is it impressive? Not really. Do I feel closer to James at times like this? Absolutely.

37:56 Does that thing have auto focus switched on? The moment the telephone entered the viewfinder, the focus ran away. I may be oldfashioned, but you should focus yourself. You see why, here.

And by now the battery should only hold a charge for five minutes, which coincidentally is just slightly longer than James would want to talk to anyone on the telephone. It's perfect.

@legomaster7982 Mumps was a childhood disease that would make your neck swollen. It's one of those diseases that was present the last century but is now almost gone because of vaccines.

    • @CrazedSpace
      @CrazedSpace 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

@legomaster7982 Mumps is a virus which had a vaccine introduced to the public in 1967. Before that, it was essentially a part of life as a kid. Pretty miserable experience, but, just like those ringing bells, an indicator of what time you grew up in. For kids who grew up in the 70s-90s, it'd be like chicken pox and T1 cell phone keyboards.

it is already out on sjit flix.
Season 1 and 2 out there.
And they are currently working on season 3.
      It is gonna be amazing.
Season 1 and 2 both ended basically the same.
Season one was the paint getting dry. Forming a small layer.
Season 2 was the layer developing even more.
But the fans started writing emails.
      They expected more.
And so, season 3 will be about how the paint behaves once a layer has formed on top of it.
I just can't wait to find out how it will end.
If i was the director, i would finish it by filming a bucket of paint that has been exposed to the elements for years.
As in: A solid block of paint in a bucket.
And then, i would end the clip with a guy carrying this bucket of solid paint to the garbage bin.
I perhaps would include a crying smiley ontop of the bucket of solid paint, to show its emotions when it is dropped in the garbage bin,
Imagine: A crying smiley on top of a bucket of dried out paint.....
To me it is like the red dress girl in Swindlers list.
