  • 1984 Johnson 9.9 on G3 all welded 1448 aluminum Jon boat with 1/2 inch plywood floor. Lake Allatoona, may 2013. Top speed 21 MPH. Carburetor is from another 15HP Johnson. Has original 9.9 exhaust tube which is holding it back by about 1 HP.

Did you ever install the 15hp Exhaust tube? And if so, was there any increase in speed?

No I haven’t. But saw video when guy did it after installing 15 hp carb on 9.9. He said after he did test run with new rounded exhaust tube that he didn’t feel any improvement. And I think he had GPS which confirmed it didn’t go any faster.

@@vojomatusenko thanks for getting back to me. I was considering swapping out the exhaust tube, and while I had the block off, installing boyesen reeds, but I'm not so sure I really want to tear it down that far, especially if it's not going to make much difference.

How would you compare/estimate the performance of a true 15hp Johnson/Evinrude on an Alumacraft 1648 NCS flat bottom? I would think an all welded 1448 hull like you have here would weigh slightly more than a riveted 1648. I think Alumacraft says they weigh 300 lbs.
I'm just curious. I just put a deposit down on the Alumacraft model I mentioned and also recently bought a 1982 9.9 and 1982 15 hp Evinrude. My plan is to take the strongest powerhead, lower unit, and other parts and build one really solid 15hp motor and sell the leftover 9.9 motor to recoup some money. As long as I can get 15-16 mph with two adults, trolling motor, battery, and a light load of fishing gear I will be happy.
Keep up the videos as well! I really enjoy them.

We need to see a startup of a Johnson 9.9 that has timing ignition and spark but still will not kick over even with starting fluid and good gas. Yes I have one!

What kind of GPS speedometer do you have in your videos? Great vids, most DON'T show the speed and THAT is what we want to know!

I think you needed to to have the microphone closer. Could barely hear even at full volume.
