Here are 3 Linear Fills that work in a musical context. They are simple fills but they pack a punch and are great to have in your back pocket whenever you need to whip it out and lay down a sweet and useful chop! They are all different in length and pattern, using all toms and kick drum. Please take time to learn it slow and clean before speeding it up! These are fills I have used is songs and live shows so I know they will work well for you also!

To every person who is actually serious in asking the question about how one plays these or any licks, beats or fills seen on you tube with such clarity, speed, and consistency. The answer to that question is practice practice practice. I've found, and I've been playing drums 30 years now, if you're having trouble finding time to practice, or just always put it off or go do something else chances are you'll never, or have difficulty doing any licks with any effectiveness. I always made and make time for drumming, always. I love it, and learn these licks, make my own licks, and I love it so much and will never stop. I'm 49, and still know one day I will be professionally sponsored to play some companies shit.

I gotta' tell ya' man... I love your approach. You talk it through (one e ana two e ana); show the pattern on the snare and kick; give it context on the toms. Nice. Everyone else just jumps to context, but I'm a beginner, so the way you provide the PATH to the fill is HUGE! After watching this I was able to grab sticks and play them (sort of) on the first attempt.

Great lesson on linear fills Eric. I have just started learning about linear grooves and have been now playing them nicely. Different from the way I was taught. I love the whole linear idea. Thank you for this free lesson. I feel that the linear world opens up my vocabulary so much more. I will practice these fills.

Hey Eric, been drumming a long time, but new to expanding the skill set using TH-cam. Out of all the similar short lesson videos I've discovered recently I'm liking yours the best man! Really enjoy your straight forward explanations to the approach and the overall format of the videos. Thank you for sharing! How about some lessons on poly rhythm grooves (like 16th or 8th note over triplets) and/or some linear fills accenting 16th note triplets...just a suggestion.

Nice fills and great comments about any potential applications. I really want to incorporate linear fills more often in a musical context and I´ll definitely get straight to hammering (my variations of) these fills into muscle memory, because damn are they tasty ;) Thx!

No thank You sir! Oh and the third one somehow came very natural to me, when I realized that I had actually already played it before. It's kind of there in the final chorus on "Rope" by Foo Fighters. Heavy hitting linear fill by Taylor 8th bars in.
