    nice, but c'mon, honestly! a belgian malinois is definitely gonna learn stuff this rapidly. I had a mal and had to save up for his college, they're so smart!

    It's so cool to hear German commands in your videos 😁 Why do you use the German "Platz" instead of "Down"? Love your videos obviously :)

      I know you asked 2 years ago, but this is because he can give 2 dogs separate commands whilst he is training, otherwise when the says "sit" to 1 dog the other would do the same

    I understand repetition and follow up has to be consistent for progress, but you taught this in one session with her???

    What exactly is the raised cot you use at the end? I'd be interested to use one of these.

    How would you shape a down into one piece when the dog sits before their down?

    • @tomdavisofficial
      @tomdavisofficial  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What do you mean?

    • @gemlepie
      @gemlepie 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I ask for the “down” command she always sits first then downs( two separate movements) but when lured she “downs” in one movement from “stand”. Like Lakota did around 6:40 when you said she messed up.

    • @scottfarlam1882
      @scottfarlam1882 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you teach your dog to down from a sit they learn that as the movement, its best to teach them down from a stand from the beginning.

    • @k9leadstheway531
      @k9leadstheway531 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to utilize the sit and down in variation. Your dog generalizes what you mentioned because you always tell her the command sit before the down. Just mix it up.

    are you rewarding with her with a portion of her food?

      Austin Whitlock no it's just beef liver!

    • @austinwhitlock1451

      I guess leading to the question, how long would you reward with food prior to just praising?

    • @tomdavisofficial
      @tomdavisofficial  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Austin Whitlock once the command is taught I usually reward 1/4 times with food.

    Isn't the stay already implied in the sit??? The dog can not break the sit command, there for the dog stays in position

    I appreciate the STAND video, but I noticed that you repeat commands instead of asking her to self-correct, you say yes more than once for the same behavior, and sometimes say yes without rewarding her. If I was new at dog training, I would find this very confusing. Nevertheless, it was fun to watch her progress.

      They always start sloppy when learning something new. once she knows the word he'll tighten her up and fine-tune it so that it doesn't appear so messy. Also, Lakota was still a puppy at the time of this video, you should see her now! Much better.

    Oh man let the dog complete your commands - example you said sit and the dog never completed the sit and then you said YES and gave her a treat. Slow down and let the dog complete the command. You as a handler are way to active

    Do you just continue increasing the distance to teach stand in place? I don’t have the cot and my puppy wants to come after the stand. I’m trying to stop using stay after she stands. Do I need to be more patient or am I missing steps.
    Great videos by the way; I’ve shared the link to your channel and subscribed.

    This has been the best sit - stand video. I struggled last night tryIng to teach my dog to stand with food marking and he didn't understand, me neither ha! as I was trying to have him reverse into stand. Sit and down we have achieved from close up and distance. Looking forward to trying this as his breakfast lesson. The place cot at the end of the video makes sense as I was worried he may think stand would be to come. Thank you wish us luck

      Well if you don’t
      Control your dog
      And make it understand
      Nothing will happen
      But if you train her for like 20 minutes without a break or a walk
      She won’t want to listen

    How do you feed her so many treats without diarrhea? No matter the treat, it only says lile 5 or 10 per day

    • @alhonnaalfred9078
      @alhonnaalfred9078 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He's using beef liver which is very easy for most dogs to digest and a hell of a lot healthier than most store-bought or packaged dog treats, plus they are cut into really small pieces so the dog can have a lot of them with no digestive problems. Also, he only treats this much when initially teaching the command. Once she knows what stand means he can and will switch to mostly other rewards like verbal praise or toys.

    Harder to teach this way when the YES is utilized as a marker but also a release. My dog understands yes as both, so wont break the sit unless is told another command. I trained the stand with a little leash pressure right in front of the hips, then quickly extinguished the leash once my pup understood what was going on.

    Hi Tom, I was wondering how you would train a husky/shepherd to stop counter surfacing? I have 4 other dogs none of which do this. Kodiak is almost 1 yrs. that I took out of a cruel situation and the only thing he can do now is sit and leave it. I thought maybe he would pick the good behaviors from the others but it isn't happening. I love your training ethics as I learned from William Koeller's trainging and I find it still works but people around here only want food luring for every thing.
