      Appreciate every DW host but if I had to choose I'd take Walsh over Klavan (espeically since Klavan is just weekly now) Still though when I watch Knowles and Walsh interact it sort of feels like two brothers who are trying to keep up appearances while they talk to each other, because one of them has a new girlfriend who's around or something, and they're going out of their way to make a good impression. Even if there is some genuine appreciation for each other, everyone involved knows that they're very aware that they're being watched, and behaving accordingly. (still think the Knowles Walsh collaborations are good though)
      I can't state any facts about any of these men who I've never personally met, but to me the FEELING I get when Klavan is here, is that these two actually care for each other.

    I will forever defend hard rock and metal, especially in the modern era of music because if you have the ear to listen to the intricacies of the music, it’s really quite delicately woven. True, its lyrics and rhythms rely almost solely on raw emotion, but there is value to that. I flat out reject the notion that there are no melodies or harmonies.
    The label of “the devil’s music” is certainly untrue, for I would argue today’s pop music is much more satanic than metal ever has been. With few exceptions, hard rock/metal concerts are about the togetherness of music and simply enjoying music.

    • @Meyer-gp7nq
      @Meyer-gp7nq ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Plus a lot of metal is openly (or closeted) Christian. Listen closely to Linkin Park lyrics, for example,
      (And don’t make fun of me for calling Linkin Park metal, they are the closest to secular metal I listen to, I mostly listen to Skillet and Thousand Foot Krutch and stuff)

    • @nebulysses7124
      @nebulysses7124 ปีที่แล้ว

      Metal bands use to use satanic imagery and themes as a shock factor and for marketing within the fan base. And even then it was more obscured, making the band mysterious thus interesting.
      As for today's pop music... I. Don't. Know. Honestly. Like, it is sooo overt and in your face, yet somehow more creepy. There is no logical sense I can make of it. Except, if they literally sold their soul to Satan, or at least genuinely believe that they have. I don't know, it's weird.

    This was great! I loved all of it, but disagreed thoroughly on the metal music conclusion. At least Andrew suggested he just didn’t know what he didn’t know. Metal is a broader musical genre than most, with some closer to “rock” and some much closer to differently-instrumented classical music. The latter is extremely complex and rich musically, highly ordered, more so than essentially any music written today. But i wouldn’t expect people to know that if they aren’t aficionados. It doesn’t have to be for everybody

    Love these videos Michael! You guys are a blast to listen to! I must disagree on your opinion of metal music though. There is such beauty and passion in metal music and even incredible melody and depth of lyrics. It can be jarring at first but once you are able to get over the initial shock of the screaming vocals or high gain guitars, there is truly some incredible music to listen to. Some of the most brutal music has almost brought me to tears with the emotion conveyed and also I have smiled as I listened to other stuff with truly original artistry with some of the more progressive metal which takes a lot of inspiration from jazz with odd time signatures and unconventional chord progressions and instruments. Michael you seem to have an open mind about many things I'd love you to be able to get to the point where you can enjoy metal music and see the value in expression and art that it does!

    Other than the huge misconceptions and faulty comparison of metal music with other genres, this was a great episode! Metal can contain all of the musicality of any other genre, and compared to a lot of the pop that is popular today, it has more.

      Absolutely agree. My generation grew up on metal music, and there is a big difference between Cannibal Corpse and Norma Jean. Christian metal deserves to be acknowledged for its potential to bring people to God. Pop music is where you find satan in today’s society. Metal songs are often about honor, dignity, and considering philosophical and moral questions - metal music is rooted in celebrating complexity. It is the logical evolution of classical music.

    Michael as a Catholic I agree with the majority of your stances. I must draw the line at the metal music comment though. I’ve been listening to metal since I was 8yrs old and I encourage you to look into some wonderful Christian metal bands such as Skillet (lead singer is a fantastic Christian advocate), Demon Hunter, August Burns Red and The Devil Wears Prada to name a few. Their lyrics, public statements and core beliefs are so profound. It is completely alright to not enjoy the genre of metal, but to say that it is inexcusable is dare I say an out of touch and ignorant statement for those of us who have sought a lot of solace in God’s word and message through this genre. Not that you will ever see my comment, but in the off chance welcome to my TED Talk and I would love nothing more than to take you on an educational journey of Christian metal.

    • @MarcusHCrawford
      @MarcusHCrawford 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree with this. I love metal music, and Christian hardcore in my teenage years really helped bring me closer to god. Passion and anger are human emotions, and Christian metal is about coming to terms with the human experience. Even Christian hip-hop exists. Christian R&B.
      Metal is passionate and angry. Hip-hop is prideful and violent. R&B is lecherous and lustful. Yet, with all of these qualities, great Christian bands and groups exist within all of these genres and are able to subvert the perceptions of the genre to spread the word of god.
      Bands like Norma Jean and Underoath allowed me to vent emotions I didn’t know what to do with, and channel those feelings into music and physical activity. Shows were about together with others, and just letting it all out in safety, consequence free.

      @bihan1429 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I love these guys but the way Michael depicts rock and metal is so stereotypical of someone who's never actually listened to it but just wants to bash it. It's not simply percussive and the rules of music have not been stripped away from it, nor melody or harmony. I mean, these are generalised statements and there are a ridiculous number of sub genres in metal. But there are plenty examples of metal music which have major parallels with classical music and even jazz. Complex song structures, not just three chords, odd time signatures and an absolute breeding ground for guitar virtuosos. Not so dissimilar to how certain violinists are seen in classical. It makes for more interesting and less predictable music than you might hear on your typical radio station. If only people would shed their preconceived misconceptions about it.

    I would definitely check out some symphonic metal bands. Within Temptation, Epica, Nightwish etc.

    I really enjoyed this show for the most part......You lost me when you said no to Metal music. I'm not saying all metal music is good, but there are a lot of songs that require a lot of talent to sing and play. Also there are a lot of good metal Christian bands with great music and good messages. As a disabled Vet who was contimplating suicide I was honestly saved by some of the songs I listened to that gave the message to carry on and look for the light. Honeslty if you find music you enjoy and makes you a better person thats all that really matters. I still love Michael and Andrew.

    I worked until our oldest 2 children were 4 years old and almost 2 years old. I was part-time with or daughter, and my in-laws cared for her. I worked full-time after our son was born, and I wanted to be home with them the whole time. I spent the next 24 years having 4 more children and raising them. I have been working full-time for the past 3 years and miss being at home.

    I demand the Daily Wire have the two of them listen to Metal. Since it's the holidays they could listen to Sabaton's Christmas Truce. Five Finger Death Punch's cover of Gone Away is fantastic. Michael might actually like Imperial Heretic by Parkway Drive.

      I would imagine if there's any metal Michael might enjoy, it would be OM.
      Kinda unrelated but I've been dipping my toe in hardcore/punk/hard rock/metal/shoegaze again (extreme metal was my jam as a teenager, my tastes have broadened and softened since then) and there's this new band "Fleshwater" that's got me really stoked about the sort of heavy music the zoomers are gonna be able to come up with. I recommend you check out their 2022 album, it's dope. Not quite metal, but something I suspect an old rocker would appreciate. "Narrow Head" is another new(ish) band in this vein I'm excited about.
      One thing I'll say about the zoomer bands is they tend to genre-bend quite a bit and take influence from all corners of their musical heritage. It's cool.
      Given the bands you're into I suspect you're close to me in age, and I'm curious if you've noticed any new fresh young bands under the broad category of "heavy music" that you find interestinf.

    I love Drew but even as a protestant, I have 0 clue how anyone sticks with the Anglican church, which was founded because an English king got denied a divorce so he could produce a male heir. I get why people choose Catholicism, but Anglican makes no sense to me. That said, I love Drew :)

    • @paulwoodhouse3386
      @paulwoodhouse3386 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I like that England, and by extension the C of E, basically owned half the globe, and practically gave us America. Also I like reformed roots it has, and the book of common prayer is kinda cool. The divorce part isn't great I guess...

    • @eimaiakominzontanos
      @eimaiakominzontanos ปีที่แล้ว

      That's one of the myths of history. The English church reformation was already underway before Henry the 8th. His divorce was just used as a catalyst to split from the Pope. The English church has roots all the way back to the 2nd century in the roman empire. In many ways, it was always a distinct form of Christianity and just happened to fall into the western Catholic church. The Anglican reformers thought they were returning to that original church, more so than that they were creating something new. That's the reason why they kept many of the "Catholic" forms of worship as opposed to many of the Continental reformers.

    I will defend metal music here, and recommend you listen to an instrumental titled "Orion", by Metallica. Some metal is bad and just percussive, but Metallica's 2nd, 3rd, and 4th albums all incorporated harmonies and melodies, and never praised satan or disparaged God. In fact, they have a song about Passover from the point of view of the Angel of Death. I would recommend listening to some metal before making a blanket statement.

    If you were to listen to the band Theocracy, they're a great melodic metal band that is great at sophisticated techincal music. It's a Christian band and their songs are phenomenal -- their band name is explained in one of their songs as well.

    Loved all of it but I gotta disagree with the music tastes at the end. To say that music and rock are bad poetry when bands like RUSH existed. Lookup "Freewill" by Rush. That's poetry of not just words.
    Also they were pretty generally wholesome.

    47:55 This reminds me of the scene where Thursday is recruited in G.K. Chesterton's 'The Man who was Thursday'.
    There the point is made that all the normal criminals like thieves and murderers and so on at least do their crime for honest reasons in a way, they at least do them for human reasons, but the anarchists just want everything to perish and as such are properly called diabolic.
