"Oh Lola I'm sure that the love would have been The key to all your pain No words will later come Did she spider bite your tongue We will surely not forget the Lola spider dance"
Incredibly disappointing, Culture Victoria, to suggest that there was nothing lewd in the Spider Dance by Lola Montez. Michael Cannon, in his book Melbourne After the Gold Rush, states that when Montez performed her dance in Melbourne's Theatre Royal she raised her skirts "so high that the audience could see she wore no underclothing at all". (Cannon is also quoted on Montez' Wikipedia entry.) Showing your naughty bits continues to be considered risque, even decades after shows such as Hair sought to shock their audiences out of complacency. (The movie of Hair was a disgraceful parody that didn't understand the story.) I look forward to this piece being updated to reflect what the Spider Dance actually involved and how shocking it would have been to those 19th century audiences as well as to modern audiences.
this is simply inaccurate. at one point of the dance she literally raised her dress so high that the audience could see that she was wearing no underwear. also, she was not praised and “showered with gold nuggets.” her dancing was often described as horrible and her career as a dancer was never a prosperous one. the only praise she received was due to her associations with those in higher class, and even that ended quickly for her
Lola did not ever appear onstage without undergarments; this was a rumor spread by her detractors, who were always ready to believe and to circulate the worst about her. Many of them never actually saw her dance and were making assumptions.
This attempt at a portrayal of Lola and her dance presents an actress who obviously knew little about either.--and who actually appears to be a blonde. Her skirts were no shorter than those of other dancers of the day, and contemporary accounts assure us that many found her dancing quite acceptable.

She was a courtesan and I imagine her dance was shocking.
