  • Well 2024 is really sucking so far. I got sick the day after Christmas and that had me down for a week and now the front wheel bearing on Big Munchie ASV RT-120F has failed. In the process it chewed up the front axle as well so we've got major repairs to make!

    Considering how chewed up the axle and inner hub are, I’m surprised you didn’t throw a track and wheel while working. What a mess. Good job you found the full extent of the damage before fitting the new wheel.

    I'm very sorry to see the problems you have encountered with the ASV. But at least it is repairable. Sometimes you just have to send these to the shop. Maybe you can get some recommendations from the mechanics about ways to prevent this issue from happening again. Hope you get healed up and back to 100 percent. Hang in there, brother.

    Pick up a decent dead blow hammer and a cheap set of wrenches. That way you can "bump" the bolts loose without risking your knuckle skin. Learned that a good while ago when I was a mechanic.

    Got my first skid steer in the beginning of December because of this channel. Kubota SVL 65-2. I’ve made $5k this month and was on a roll but then my windshield got busted out by some random kids ($1250) and house AC crapped and I need a new unit. $8k. When it rains it pours. You just gotta laugh at it say fukk it or it will eat you alive.

    i worked at a Power Generation Plant for 45 yrs and 30 of those years was spent as a mechanic in maintenance. We use to take the covers off of the sealed bearings and pack them with grease because the amount of grease they put in there was just not enough by our standards. If you were doing the job yourself i would suggest packing those bearings yourself. But you are taking it to the dealership shop . I knew that shaft would be damaged because of the bearing failure. You use that machine alot , too bad that you can't grease those bearing once in a while with fresh grease like you do on the arms of machine which hold your attachments. Live and learn. Good luck , hope the rest of the year is good to you.

    Two things….first I really liked that you tried to fix your own stuff. Second I would have the dealer remove the dust cover on the other side and check the nut. Also…I would also look at how many hours you have on the machine and divide it by two and in the future every let’s say 500 or 1000 hours you remove the dust cover and inspect the bolt that came loose. I bet the big washer you found was between the nut and bearing….if so and you decide to inspect in the future just remove nut, washer add new grease and then torque back down and replace dust cover.

    Let me tell you something that you may not know. You my man. set the standard for filming forestry mulnching on the fly on big munchie. You know exactly where to place the go pro to get the best pictures and filming of the distruction your cutter makes. I first started watching Upstate Brush Control, but I found your videos are much more exciting to watch. Most of the time you are not lazy about moving the go pro around to get the best angle for us to see what your mechine can do. The only thing I see that would make your posts better for me is if you would push past your comfort zone sometimes. But I know why you don't do that. You have learned from your mistakes and most of the time you have to fix'em yourself. If your running Big munchie A'm watchin.

    Once you get that axle out check with big truck axle repair places and see if they can replace that spindle so you have a spare one laying there ready especially if they are common for each side. I would drill a hole for a grease fitting, grease it then put a plug in the grease fitting hole OR pack it full of grease when installed

    I knew that axle surface would be seriously scored up in the last video you used big munchie in. The minute you could here that creaking and popping it was already too late. When you burn up a bearing those crushed little metal pieces grinding in there take very little time to eat through the inner race and start eating into the axle. It's a good thing you're attentive to sounds or that would've eaten a deep enough groove into the axle for it to snap on you, and then you'd be in a whole new world of trouble. That being said because of the extremely uneven forces being applied with that inner bearing gone and the axle chewed up you really need to replace the outer assembly as well. Those uneven forces will at the very least cause excess play in the outer bearing due to bellmouthing the inner race, but more likely it has very unevenly worn the balls within the bearing (and the cage is probably eaten through) which will lead very quickly to bearing failure. You'd be doing yourself a favor by replacing the outer assembly now rather than when it fails within a few months at most and risking another axle replacement when it does fail.

    IMHO: Jack the machine up and pull the track off. Later on it will make life easy for you repairing the part. Also inspect all the other under-carriage components. With one failure there may be more. Repairing undercarriage is something you have to be good at... or spend money on a mechanic.

  • @paulmace7910
    @paulmace7910 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    If you have equipment it’s going to break. I would learn to do that kind of repair myself. There is enough info on the internet to show you what to do. It’s bad enough to have to pay for the parts much less dealer repair rates. Yes, you are not working if you are fixing, but the money you give to the mechanic is from your profits.

      I wouldn't think it's Davin, as busy as he is. I don't know how he has time to edit these, much less deal with comments.
      From personal experience commenting on other channels, sometimes it's the dang YT algorithm, not the channel owner. One thing I've learned is, if you think it might be deleted, try re-sorting the comments using the 'Sort by' control, from 'Top comments' to 'Newest first', and see if it's there in that view. If so, try and go back immediately and edit it, making some small change. If it throws that red text error and won't post the edited comment, you've used a word or phrase that the algo isn't letting in, or some other reason the algo doesn't like you. And at least what I've found is, once you see that error, no amount of changing the comment will let it post, that one's just done.
      Anyway, joys of YT. Good luck!
