Geniuse scene. Spielberg weaves shots of a traditional musical number with the pursuit and menace. The dancing gets honored and focused for several seconds of pure joy. Great editing.
I saw this movie at the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood when it was first released to a packed house and it seems to me everybody loved it. The thing is that everybody who went to see this movie in the first few weeks probably saw the lengthier previews shown in the theaters and knew what kind of movie they were going to see. Other viewers probably assumed because it was a Spielberg movie it was going to have a more familiar plot and couldn't keep up with the fast tempo and slapstick comedy. To me it's still a comedy gem and a must see for any John Belushi fan.
I remember I was gonna take this girl swing dancing, practiced some moves from this for awhile, night of the date came, she stood me up. Still can crack a few of these moves!
The later half of the film is loosely (LOOSELY) based on an actual event/evening: The Battle of Los Angeles, Feb. 1942...it was a real thing. (BTW, I absolutely love the women of that era.🇺🇸💙🇺🇸💙🇺🇸💙🇺🇸🌹)

The two guys were in BIG RED 1 with Mark Hamill, and Treat Williams was in Empire Strikes Back. Carrie Fisher was in the Blues Brothers with those other guys.
The clarinet solo was by the late, great Abe Most, one of my mentors. His late brother, Sam Most, was a pioneer in jazz flute and played on my CD, "George Kosich Sings and Plays Jazz Greats." I sing all vocals and play sax and clarinet on this CD.

As the movie was intended for an adult audience the gags were to childish and so not well received. But it still is funny and very entertaining.
Many of the people associated with this film were also reported consuming tons of drugs at the time, including Spielberg, who’s always tap danced around the issue somewhat.
I was about 5 years old when this was on KTXL 40 uncut. I LOVE this movie. The physical stunt work with the USO and the riots are AMAZING. Guys hit with chairs, flying through plate glass, the zootsuits fall out of the back of the pickup when it’s rear ended, all the guys ducking when dan akroyd fires the 30 cal at the marquee. Through a child’s eyes it’s just funny, as an adult I just see pain.😁
Folks HATED this movie because it was too loud and frenetic. Ironically it would do much better is it were released today. We love loud and frenetic now.
The band must have listen to lots of Big Band music. But I believe more of Benny Goodman. For the tunes. Are the same. I had dance one time like that. But not like the main couple. What a great not we all had. Then it all ended. Sad. I can't dance any more.
When in elementary school my friend played tenor (I’m a drummer) he had to use one of those luggage dolly’s to get it to and from school, because the case was nearly as big as he was. Of course that’s back when we walked to school but it was never more than a mile.
