That, or at least the Mercedes were not built by bean counters.
I think about how many 70s and 80s cars went to FWD before the proper tech was there. They shipped with CV axles that did not last, and it lead to rebuilt ones that were only worse.
Mercedes diesels were a legend. They may have cost a large amount to buy, but their lifespan meant they were worth the price.
GM had some diesels back then. They were and absolute joke. Engineers were ordered to take a gasoline engine and the bean counters ordered to build what engineering said was impossible. The Olds gasoline V8 was fine when it was a gasoline engine. There was no way to beef it up for diesel.
There were gasoline engines successfully beefed up for diesel, use, but none were from GM. VW did it successfully with the Rabbit diesel.

Ich fahre schon über 40 JAHRE Mercedes, w123 230e, w124 200e, w168 3X, w169 1x, w245 1X und jetzt w246 1X. Alle Fahrzeuge ohne Probleme und ohne Ärger, mit hohen Kilometerleistungen, ab 260.000km und mehr. Der w246 hat jetzt erst 80.000km, das wird wohl mein letzter sein. Das sind meiner Meinung die besten. !!!
