John Edwin Mason - Author, Gordon Parks: American Photographer

John Edwin Mason, associate professor, University of Virginia, is the author of the forthcoming book, Gordon Parks: American Photographer, the first in-depth study of the photo-essays on race and social justice that Parks produced for Life from 1948 through 1970. His talk is part of the i3: Images, Ideas, Inspiration lecture series, which features presentations by digital photographers, hardware and software developers and industry experts. Lectures like this one are so important for the health and history of American culture. What Professor Mason said about the paucity of scholarship devoted to Gordon Parks continues to hit home. John Szarkowski excluded Parks from his 1966 The Photographer's Eye and his 1973 Looking at Photographs; in 2020 David Campany excluded Parks from his On Photographs.
