I keep a small propane burner with a small set of camping cookware along with water and freeze dried meals in a tote in the back. It always has emergency flashers a tire pump, tire plug kit, fix a flat, a small battery jumper, a thick blanket a bunch of gloves, a foldable military shovel, a first aid kit and other things I can't think of. I also have an IFAK (trauma kit) in the front with an emergency cell phone that runs on 2 AA batteries that has a plastic pull tag so it's always ready to dial 911. It's physically attached to my head rest. I try to always be prepared. I live by the moto " I'd rather have it and not need it vs needing it and not having it."

I agree. When I use to travel from Texas to NC, I would keep a blanket in the back, along with food, extra water, toilet paper, wipes, etc. just in case I was impacted by snow, or other road hazard, and couldn’t get help. It’s always wise when traveling anywhere. I’m glad everyone made it out okay.

Snowstorms dumping feet of snow are nothing new. The interstates should have been shut down early. They do it all the time on i35 through Iowa and Minnesota until the plows have a chance to catch up. Then they open hours or a day later.
That section of 95 sucks without ice & snow. Edit: the funny thing is I haven’t driven that part of 95 in over 15 years & the comments tell me nothing has changed.
I normally do, and make sure you keep your tank full. I got stuck on the road during an ice event one winter, for four hours. I had to tinkle so bad. That was the worst part.
I know it was so cold and there is no food but at the end there was a happy ending. I hope You all arrived to your cozy home safely.But after this experience I hope everyone started to feel about poor people in other places around the world ,they always cold and hungry and they never know when they are going to eat. I am the first person before others to admit that I did not provide enough assistance to poor people, so I will try before others to be strong and help the poor people even if it is just a half meal , because if I helped with a small amount and others do the same then every one will be full and no more hunger. It did start off as rain because the temperature in VA the day before was in the 60's. I live right where this happened. They still should have pre-treated the roads. I laid salt all over my driveway and even with the rain...it still helped.

@@Ninnjette- I live between Quantico and Fredericksburg. We had just gotten in late from a road trip from Texas and it was a few minutes before midnight on Sunday night. I took the time to lay salt out on the driveway even though the forecast said it would start off as rain then turn into snow and that's exactly what happened. I was still awake when it started raining.. maybe between 2 and 3am. Then the temperatures dropped and the snow started. Even though it rained the salt I had used on the sidewalk prevented a sheet of ice from forming. We were able to remove the snow easily where as all the neighbors that didn't sprinkle salt had sheets of ice under the snow in their driveways. This is why I think treating the roads would still have made a huge difference regardless of the rain that fell. It definitely made a difference in my driveway. Snow came off easy but lost power for 4 days!
The same thing happened to me in January of 1984 on the same stretch of road. A cold rain turned to freezing rain and locked down the highway. I had a full tank of fuel, food, and warm clothes with me but we were there for 13 hours, and there were no cell phones. This is weather folks, it happens! If you travel I-95 in the winter you should be prepared for this kind of event. Keep some water, food, and a blanket in your car and don't let your fuel go below 1/2 tank. BTW, I-95 has some very steep hills between DC and Fredericksburg Va. You can't blame this on the politicians, it's the weather!
I left from New York back home to North Carolina the very same time as the snow started to come down. Luckily I used Google navigation and it showed heavy red traffic all over, but the traffic where I was were still slowly moving. Stop and Go traffic no more than 5mph. I manage to get off the next ramp and took the backroad. By time I got near Richmond, I got txt alert on my phone about hwy closures and stuff. That is probably one of the best decision I made.
This is the reason why I'm ready for everything in my car. My trunk has things for hiking, beach,camping, rain, and even in the cold day. And my family think I'm crazy. 🤔 one more thing my ice cooler
Why didn’t the STATE POLICE set up a detour on I95 Northbound, so they could turn the cars around at the TAIL END of the traffic jam? Then simply direct them to go south to the safest exits. Could have had them following snow plows! Seems like it would have been quicker than waiting for the accidents up ahead to be cleared up.

Where was Gov Coonman Northam? Typical for Va - say the rain would wash away salt and then spread it after the road conditions cause accidents. Lived there for 40 years and the salt trucks only ran after bridges iced up and cars spun out. I would rather waste salt than put peoples lives at risk.

This is a learning lesson. Always have your gas tank above 3/4. Have a few bottles of water, non perishables in the trunk. "Hot pack" hand and feet warmer pouches and 2 BIG candles with a lighter. At least those candles will give you heat and you dont need to burn fuel non-stop.

I live here. I95 is a problem on a good day! I’ve learned to keep emergency supplies in my car. Never leave the house on such days with kids.
My dad lives in Fredericksburg, his job is 30 minutes away it takes him an hour to get there because of I 95.

NJ DOT would pre treat roads several days before a storm. It was like that famous hot sauce. They'd put that sh*t on everyhing.

This is a learning lesson. Always have your gas tank above 3/4. Have a few bottles of water, non perishables in the trunk. "Hot pack" hand and feet warmer pouches and 2 BIG candles with a lighter. At least those candles will give you heat and you dont need to burn fuel non-stop.

That's brutal .allways have a survival kit prepared in your vehicle. You have to have enough food and water for 2 days.
I personally drive through 3-5 inches of snow multiple times a year. Now add 45-50 mph winds and you might have something. Just saying!!!!!

There was snow plows in wv early morning on the 3rd, they were expecting the same. Too bad WV was much better prepared. Just excuses from VA.

If I saw this if I was driving there, i wouldn't bother waiting. I'd either get out and walk to the nearest restaurant or just drive on the opposite!
