Before retiering I was a calibration technician of electronic measuring equipment for 13 years. I can tell you something about these moisture meters.
All moisture meters are only approximate meters. They give you an indication of the approximate moisture content of your firewood. The differences between the meters is normal and has little or nothing to do with the "accuracy" of the meter.
What the meter tells you depends on the way the measurement is done. The distance between the measuring pins. The species of wood. Also the moisture content plays a role.
Sounds logical that the moisture content plays a role. What I mean is this. Suppose you have a piece of wood that has an absolute moisture content of 21%. You can't measure this electronically but just assume it is 21%. With one meter you may get a reading of 18% and an other will show 22%. The first meter is 3% low and the second is 1% high.
Now you get a piece of the same wood but that has a 35% moisture content. You measure it with the same 2 meters. The first now reads 36% and the second 34%. Now both are only 1% off but the first in high and the second is low. This shows that the real moisture content does have an influence on the measurement.
Note: These values are only as an example, real values can and will be completely different.
All electronic moisture meters only give you an indication and not a real accurate value. It does not really matter which meter you use as long as you use the same meter all the time. Only then you can compare the readings and can you get a pretty good indication.
A reading of 20% on bass wood is not the same as 20% on pine wood. If bass wood with 20% moisture in your wood burner works fine this will not automaticly mean that it is also fine for an other species of wood. For pine it may be your meter will have to read 18% for the wood to be good for your wood burner. Maybe it will be good with a reading of 24%. He, any reading could be good.
All this means you have to make a list of all the wood spicies you use and the readings with your meter that give you the best results.
Also don't be surprised when you buy wood that shows 15% on the meter of the seller and your meter shows 18%. That is completely normal!
    Success.

Another interesting video from GP outdoors! I have a Ligno moisture meter which is supposed to be good quality but have never tested it. I do know that wood that has been in my wood shop for a couple years and is completely dry reads around 6 percent which makes sense. From experimenting I have found different readings in the same piece of firewood. Measure it in the middle and the moisture is higher, the outer edges will have less since wood dries from the outside in. Split the wood in half and take another reading in the center, this will be much higher. This is where I measure to decide if the wood is ready to burn. Keep up the good work Gord! Bill

    Good evening Gord.
I use a General MMD4E meter… I got it a few years ago just to check my wood.
With that being said I have never trusted it at all.. I seasoned my wood by time I had it drying. Split Oak needs at least two years. Maple a year… I didn’t burn much of anything else. I did start cutting Beach the last few years and that drys fast. Cut it in the spring and burn it that winter. I did one year buy wood and it was mostly Ash. That you can pretty much cut today and burn it in a few weeks. But…. As I told you I gave up burning wood and went to pellets.. So much less work all the way around. I do cut some wood just to get out to play and sell a cord or two.. little play money and some good out door time. That is priceless to me. Play with the saw and tractor and splitter.
    Great review.. Thanks for sharing.
I did catch the few little things on the bench behind you at Guys.. Yes I have them too. Hahahaha He has a few more hidden talents… 👍
As always stay safe and always be kind
    Cheers

In the 30+ years I have been burning wood for heat in my house, I have never ever used a moisture meter to check the firewood! I didn't even know it was a thing until I saw another you tuber showing one. Personally, I just try and go by the old theory of letting my cut, split, and stacked wood sit for at least six months before I burn it. Preferably I cut wood this year for next year's heating season, or even better 2 years out. That being said, it was still an interesting video to watch. 😁👨‍🚒

@@GPOutdoors how should measurement be perfomed, along the fiber, across te fiber or over the cutting section? Does it say in the instructions?
      Is there difff in readings?
I think moistmeter has temperature correction. Where is the tempsensor located? Maybe device needs to have same temperature as the wood.
Looks like one of the meters is not calibrated, it just gives 20% higher readings eg 25>30٪. Would be interesting to open it up, is there an adjusting screw?

GP Outdoors is the best!!! If you are bringing cold wood indoors and testing it for moisture, chances are the cold wood might get a layer of moisture on it just because of the temperature change. Like when your glasses fog up when you come inside from the cold. It is good you did some tests outside on cold wood. I have a General MMD4E moisture meter. I chose this one because it has a calibration check you can do to make sure it is reading correctly. But as a wise person once told me, "The man with two watches never knows what time it is"! Nice video, Gord. Cheers!

I started off using a general moisture meter, but grew frustrated with the durability of the pins. I bought a Tavool during a holiday sale. so far the pins have been very durable even when pushing on oak. With out having any other meters i cant comment to the accuracy, but i have yet to burn any wood with moisture bubbling out so i cant help but trust it for now. Thanks for the great content and honest reviews GP Outdoors

I have a General moisture meter (Model MMD4E) purchased though Amazon. It has two settings - one for wood and one for building materials - and claims to be accurate +/- 2%. I can't speak to the accuracy of this meter in the context of a comparison with other meters like the test you performed. The benefit I get from this meter is to know which wood I have is the driest according to the readout. I burn the driest wood first (preferably in the teens/low 20s).

The absolute precision of a moisture meter is more of a concern for furniture makers than it is for firewood. Any firewood that measures below 20% moisture content is considered dry and ready to burn. Glad to see this meter is reasonably priced and is as accurate as Guy's meter that costs $100.
