Dan's taste in media is utterly beyond my comprehension.
Seriously bizarre lol
some part of me wonders if he reads reviews before hand to figure out how he is going to subvert expectations with his opinions 🤣
😂
Haha my thoughts exactly lol
Yeah it makes no sense. Brandon isn't much better though
Brandon should write a Rosharan Christmas carol. With Kaladin being grumpy and being visited by three Spren.
I’d love to see the spren of Christmas past come by and try to explain why his grumpiness is not warranted.
@@Mightyjordy see I figured, Christmas past would be Sel, present storm father, and future maya or pattern.
Kaladin is not a bad person though so he can’t be Scrooge.
That would be he saddest and most depressing version of a Christmas carol ever
But Kaladin already cares about all the people in his life. A Christmas Carol isn’t about Scrooge being too grumpy, it’s about him not caring about people anymore.
I would pay to see a Muppet adaptation of the Wheel of Time. Rand played by Kermit, Perrin by Fozzie, and Mat by Gonzo. The only human character would be Moiraine played by Rosamund Pike.
Edit: Lanfear played by Ms. Piggy
Oh god Lanfear by Ms. Piggy is terrifyingly perfect.
I get that Dan has his opinion about Andor, but I really need to hear why he hates it. It blows my mind how incredible it is on every level. I really hope Brandon watches it so we can hear a discussion, because I really think he will love it.
yeah... I wasn't pumped by the first two episodes because it really feels like they should have turned them into one better paced episode by tightening the editing a bit (especially the flashbacks that feel like they don't really connect with what's happening in the present... It's not a perfect show, but it's a show that has actual spirit and it's such a rare thing I don't comprehend actively disliking it - and the pacing issue is largely solved by episode 3 onwards.
I might be wrong, but my guess is that, like one of my friends who also hate it, is that Dan could be someone that prefers Star Wars to be more about the Jedi/force/magic stuff than about the bounty hunter/rebel/political side of it. Could be that they view Star Wars as an inherently fantasy-scifi IP, and that it is also inherently campy. So them doing something more serious and not magical feels like when someone takes Sonic the Hedgehog and intentionally makes it edgy. If that makes sense.
I'm curious to see if that aligns at all with the actual explanation.
@@midnightbloomofeorzea7182 that seems like a very shallow way of valuing fiction, though, seeing it for what you wish it to be rather than how well it accomplishes what it sets out to do... And for that reason, it's unlikely that it would be Dan's main issue, frankly, who as an author and member of a writing group, has to be able to separate those two things.
@@maximeteppe7627 there is a difference between not liking something and thinking it's bad. Your reasons for not liking something do not have to be deep.
@@mitigatedrisk4264 that's a good point.
It's SO WEIRD to see Brandon not sign stuff. Took me a few moments to figure out what was off.
Yes! It wasn't until he mentioned it that I realized what was off, but he seemed completely off...
Hey I'm kinda new and I mostly just listen... has he talked about his different piles before? There doesn't seem to be a complete pattern to where he puts the paper. It's fascinating.
As I was typing the piles were taken away put into one and pile anyway.
@@jessicatiedeman1065 He places pages on different piles to allow the ink to dry before putting more pages on top of it.
Totally thought this was his interpretation of a Christmas break.
@@jessicatiedeman1065 Its just separate piles so that the ink has time to dry, they don't have any specific order
Dan's taste in TV and movies is so random!
I used to think we had similar tastes, but then he says he hates Andor and gave Rings of Power an 8 out of 10 and now I have to reflect on whether or not anything I like is actually good.
They both have odd tastes in my opinion.
@@Mightyjordy Your tastes are normal. I LOVED Andor and felt underwhelmed (4 or 5 / 10) by Rings of Power. Andor had amazing writing and some of the most powerful moments I've seen on TV.
Does Dan just enjoy incompetent shows? He loves RoP and She Hulk but NOT Andor
I like that he likes what he likes and not just what's popular
I have to thank Brandon for defending the honor of Muppet Christmas Carol. Marley & Marley is a total banger and Dan is horribly wrong.
Absolutely wrong. Although, I think Muppet Treasure Island is better, and they were both lukewarm on that.
The Love is Gone is my favorite song in the movie, the actress for Emily had a lovely voice and it hits such a good emotional beat in the story.
A Muppets Count of Monte Christo sounds amazing.
It actually really does. Mercedes Piggy and Kermit Dontess.
I thought that Dan thinking Hades had no story would be the pinnacle of my disagreement with him, but in this episode he hits me with back to back hates Andor AND Muppet Christmas Carol?
I don't HATE Muppet Christmas Carol, I just don't like it very much :)
To be fair to his opinion on Hades, it looks like he tried two or three rounds before getting frustrated by the "always start from scratch" mechanic (not appreciating that in roguelikes knowledge is the power up) so he probably didn't play it long enough to see the story actually develop or realize that the characters had hundreds of dialogues.
@@danwells9305 Fair enough!
Thanks, guys. I was listening while bench pressing, and "Muppet Lord of the Flies" was very nearly fatal.
Thank you for articulating "Second Hand Embarrassment", because that is the reason I couldn't be in the room when my sister was watching Disney Channel shows when we were younger.
Let me help kickstart the “Dan is wrong about Muppet’s Christmas Carol” train 😆
Surprised when the tangent went to Blackadder that Blackadder’s Christmas Carol wasn’t mentioned. If you haven’t seen is well worth a watch!
Finally, a modern classic in my opinion is Arthur Christmas. Yes the poster looks terrible, but is probably the biggest disparity between how bad I thought it would be and how good it ended up being 😊
Arthur Christmas goes so hard, fav Christmas movie
I also liked Arthur christmas, but didn't see it until this year. I'm convinced Aardman needs to fire whoever names their movies. Half the people I talk to assume this is Arthur the character from kids shows. Don't get me started on Flushed Away.
Knowing that Brandon's favorite Christmas movie is Die Hard makes the plot of Rhythm of War so much more understandable. 🤣
I heard them begin to talk Andor, but I had not finished the show so I paused it. I was so excited to hear them talk about it and I came back to Dan saying he didn’t like it. The Grinch officially arrived.
I literally just did the same thing! I'm still glad I finally finished the show, but I can't lie, I'm disappointed they didn't discuss it. My only comfort was seeing that people brought up Arthur Christmas, my absolute favorite Christmas movie ever.
As a member of the cast of the Hale's production of A Christmas Carol, I'm so flattered to hear that you loved our work!
How can they not even mention A Christmas Story? Its hands down my favorite Christmas movie!
I've always liked Dan, but based on his take on Muppet Christmas Carol, I now believe he is, in fact, a serial killer.
The first two minutes of this episode...made me feel things
FR like andor is one of the best star wars shows ever made
Some of the best star wars ever made
@@jonathanbauer2988 One of my favorite shows
Dan’s taste is nonsensical hahaha
Its actually insane, Andor is literally a masterpiece of fiction. I think its cause Dan likes Campy starwars.
Wait a second, we’re not going to get into why Dan dislikes Andor? Andor was great!
We'll probably discuss it once Brandon has seen it.
I have to know myself
Star Wars is mid and people need to get over it.
@@frenchbaguetteoui can agree that a lot of Starwars is mid (not the original trilogy), but I think Andor is an outlier, and is genuinely great
A lot of Star Wars fans think Andor is this immaculate show Tony Gilroy blessed them but it is far from being perfect.
I really want them to talk about Andor because I’m really curious why Dan didn’t like it and I’m curious what Brandon would think of it. I think it’s the best written sci-fi/fantasy show in years and perhaps the best show of the year. I think it’s genius writing and I think anyone attempting to write a fantasy movie that involves a heist to support a revolution by a morally compromised hero who’s trying to spark a revolution should be versed in how Tony Gilroy and the Andor team did Andor.
I literally said, "The Muppet Christmas Carol is the best Christmas Carol version" just before Dan said that it was the worst.
Same
I like Dan, but he really is broken. He liked ROP and disliked Andor. I will never be able to wrap my head around that. Lol! 😳
The most underrated Christmas movie I have recently watched is Klaus on Netflix. Truly unique animation and a wholesome, funny story. Reminds me a lot of the Emperor’s New Groove.
agreed! One of my favorites
Oh yeah its pretty good 👍
The irony of Dan accusing most people of having bad taste 😂
Dan's tastes in movies is almost a perfect opposite barometer of what I like.
Muppet Christmas Carol is the greatest version of A Christmas Carol ever made, as well as a flawless movie.
This is 100% correct
Narnia is my favorite about Christmas
I think Dan might just be a bit of a hipster and likes things others hate and hates things people loves. The reason I say this, I rarely hear him give thoughtful and logical reasons for his tastes.
Andor is brilliant
Jingle All the Way is a masterpiece.
I'm not getting the hate either lol.
A Nightmare Before Christmas is a Thanksgiving movie. It opens with Halloween, but that’s just one song, and it ends with Christmas. The vast majority of that film is the time between those two holidays. What else is between those two holidays? Thanksgiving.
But there are no songs about thanking or giving thanks. No turkey. Therefore not a Thanksgiving movie.
The movie takes place over the course of a year. It covers the whole gammut.
I didn't get into this episode expecting Dan to pitch Happy New Year with so much zeal. By far the biggest twist of the year for me
The last ten years have brought forth two more glorious evergreen Christmas movies that generations to come will enjoy:
Arthur Christmas and Klaus
Both absolutely NAIL the Christmas Spirit while both are hilarious, wonderful, beautiful and easily make you tear up emotional.
Definitely on board with Arthur Christmas. It's now required viewing in my household. Haven't seen Klaus. Maybe I need to rectify that this year.
Idk if you've seen Dash and Lily yet but iirc it was a pretty well done mini series around Christmas
“What About Bob?” Is a fantastic movie
Die Hard, Elf, and Muppet's Christmas Carol are all beloved Christmas movies. However, Klaus has also made its way into my heart recently
Adam’s Family Values is a great movie for Thanksgiving and my wife’s family watches it every year. They have a thanksgiving directly in the plot
How is it possible for an author as talented as Dan to dislike andor but love rings of power and she hulk. What's going on inside this man's head?
The fact that Dan dislikes Andor is just further evidence that it’s great 😂.
Haha that's a fair way to look at it after hearing more of his movie/TV show preferences. He's broken.
Love the hale center theater's Christmas carol. I've seen it every year for like the last 25 years and it is wonderful every time. The same actor played scrounge for at least ten of those years and he will be greatly missed
Polar Express, Home Alone and Carey's Christmas Carol are probably the Christmas movies I have the most nostalgia for Polar Express because it's the one we put on every Xmas eve and when I studied Xmas Carol for my GCSEs Carey's one would always be the one they made us watch I had this little in joke with my LSA about the scene where he wakes up on Christmas morning and goes to his maid "Dance with me Mrs Dilber" idk why but Carey's delivery on that line always cracked us up
My family watches Polar Express every xmas Eve. Love that movie so much.
Don’t worry Dan and Brandon the best movie ever is a turkey movie. It’s called “free birds” and it’s about two turkeys who go back in time to stop thanksgiving
I love that more people are giving love to the Speedracer movie. It’s so good!
It's been a few years, but I have nothing but fond memories of jingle all the way
Also scarlet letter with Anna kendrick Muppets sounds hilarious
Violent Night is now one of my favorite christmas movies.
Honestly my favorite christmas movie is between Muppet's Christmas Carol and Arthur Christmas. Arthur Christmas is a surprisingly good breakdown of the idea of Santa and what that part of the holiday is really about.
Muppet Christmas Carol is fantastic! It’s also a surprisingly loyal adaptation.
Easily my favorite version of the story. I even prefer it to the book itself!
I can understanding Andor not being your favorite recent Star Wars. and personally maybe not liking it at all. But hating it is just wrong lol. It is objectively just so well made.
Jajajaja I love the contrast of Dan face while using deer horns
We love watching extended LOTR for new years
I thought for sure Brandon's favourite christmas movie was 'A Madea Christmas'. 🤣
I would actually be super curious to hear their thoughts on Andor, which I think is one of the best written genre shows ever. I don’t know if either are big Star Wars guys.
On the Thor = Santa thing, I really like the way Jim Butcher handled that in the Dresdenverse. Santa is just a seasonal mantle that Odin takes on for a short time.
Butcher did not invent this. There is a meme that the origin of Santa is Odin, but in his video Jackson Crawford, an expert in Norse mythology, explains why it is not the case. Santa is based on St. Nikolaos, who is actually celebrated on Dec. 6th in German speaking countries. Odin has some connection to Yule, one of his names is Jolnir. Anyway, merry belated Solstice and a happy Perihelion to everyone.
Blackadder's Christmas Carol is my favorite where Rowan plays Scrooge as super generous and being taken advantage of. I love the role reversal.
Star Wars Christmas from the 70s gets honorable mention/runner up as a favorite.
Looking forward to Dan's scathing thoughts on Andor. It is one of the best shows that came out this year but what exists as criticism is 100% either I can't handle content without flashy light sabers or nothing is happening when the show requires you to focus on dialogue to learn about what has happened.
At least Dan can express his thoughts.
I saw jingle all the way for the first time last year and loved it. It was awesome and had the best pinch of 90s.
Maybe that's why I enjoy it, because I'm nostalgic for that era and era of film but I am definitely a fan
Yeah, my wife's family has a tradition where they watch it every year, and she was just shaking her head during that segment haha.
My family has a tradition where we watch it every year! Brandon might not believe it but I unironically love the movie. It's hilarious 😂
The Doctor Who Christmas Carol is a very unique take on the story.
The Muppets did a Star Wars parody on the Muppet Show ("PIGS... IN... SPACE.....) and Mark Hamill guest starred.
Also, Rowan Atkinson did a movie called Jonny English, which was basically Mr. Bean asJames Bond.
Dan's taste in TV and movies seems like it's chosen at random.
Klaus. It's very new, but instantly became my favorite classic Christmas movie. When we're sitting in the living room at night with the family and sometimes have a fire. It embodies just wanting to feel warm and happy. Plus the art style has been acclaimed in many ways. It's very pretty to watch, like how the old stop-motion movies have their own appealing style.
I have been shoehorning it as a staple with my and my wife's parents for the past few years since it released
My family is doing a LotR marathon on New Year's Eve
Dan's Bollywood shout outs are so unexpected, but very much appreciated 👍
"It's burn into my skull. It's not there by choice, its like a brand" is such a powerful quote..
Home Alone 1-2. I quote them all throughout the year. Those are the Christmas movies I care about.
I loved Andor! But merry Christmas😂😂
Dan loved She-Hulk, hated Andor, and despite pointing out huge flaws in the final episodes of Rings of Power, he still gave it an 8/10.
Dan strikes me as the type to be entertained by making jokes about the show's flaws rather than entertained by the story. Has he ever considered a job with MST3K?
Good theory. He is a baffling glorb of human matter.
Emmet Otter's Jug Band Christmas. Best Christmas movie ever and I watch it almost every year
Surprised to not see Patrick Stewart's Christmas Carol in the discussion. I looked it up and apparently it was made for tv and didn't have very wide distribution, which is kind of a shame because I really liked it!
best "Christmas Carol" is the Patric Steward one. His laugh at the end is perfect and the whole set design feels like you're looking into the mid 1800's.
One of my favorite Christmas films (about Christmas) is Annabelle's Wish. It's highly underrated and I haven't heard anyone else mention it, but it's so cute and wholesome.
Patrick Stewart's Christmas Carol definitely the best version
Today I learned Dan is wrong lol.
Or at the very least has some wires crossed with regards to his tastes because there is no universe where ROP is better than Andor.
You'll never find it, because it's VHS only, but one of our Christmas favorites is 'Miracle Down Under'. It's not a high budget show, but it has some amazingly great performances and writing for what it is. As someone who has spent Christmas in Australia, it has a lot of moments that speak to me personally. The swagman Father Christmas is excellent. The little kid is way too cute. And 'British to the Core' is brilliant, as is the entire food-slinging party disaster.
I have had this exact conversation starter with various friends multiple times! Too relatable.
Also Miracle on 34th st is my favorite Christmas movie!! You should definitely watch it.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone!
I loved the hats. Happy Holidays Dan and Brandon. I hope you both enjoy your time with loved ones!
The Rifftrax for The Christmas Tree is a fantastic experience!
It's slander for someone to say that Muppet Treasure Island is not a top tier muppet movie. It's the best rendition of Treasure Island ever put to screen!
My favorite is the same as Dan’s Scrooge the musical . I am always shocked when people have never heard of it.
Surprised that “Mickey’s Christmas Carol” wasn’t discussed. It’s an annual tradition for our family and holds up very well over time. So charming and captures the spirit of the story well in a short cartoon.
Muppet's Christmas Carol is great. I was expecting Dan to say a Christmas movie that he liked, Jack Frost...
That casual calvin and hobbes reference **chef's kiss**
I like Jingle All the Way : ). To be fair to it, the part where Arnold goes to steal the toy is a low moment in the story for him, and he stops at the last second because he realizes stealing it would be going too far.
Dan wearing Reindeer antlers is my spirit animal.
Nothing says Christmas more to me like Christmas In Hollis with that LA sunset in the background.
I'll be honest I don't think I'll really read any of Dan's Cosmere stuff because the things he likes are diametrically opposed to things I like. I'm happy for him and the people that will have more stories in the world it's just there are so many stories and the Cosmere already takes up enough of my time that to devote more for something I likely won't enjoy doesn't seem like the wisest decision. Nothing against Dan, we just have differing opinions on most everything.
Did you read any of his books tho? Maybe you'll like the way he writes even though he doesn't like things you like
@@Mara15613 You definitely make a good point. I really disagree with a lot of Brandon's Star Wars opinions (they're typical OT guys which annoys me) and still love his books. Do you have a suggestion for where to start?
Wild
Read I am not a serial killer by Dan. That and the third blood in that trilogy are his best
One of my favorite new Christmas movies that I could see Dan liking is Klaus. Kinda dark in the beginning, funny throughout, and truly heartwarming in the last third. Fantastic Christmas movie! Thoughts?
Yes it is so good! It's such an interesting spin on the Santa mythology, and the movie has a ton of heart
You guys forgot the best adaptation of Christmas Carol…The Mickey/Scrooge McDuck Disney one. Love it.
Idk what the consensus is on this movie, but I recommend “The Man Who Invented Christmas” which is a romanticized dramatization of Dickens writing “A Christmas Carol.” It’s an interesting take where Dickens sees the characters as he’s writing it, and it’s just as much about him conquering his demons as it is about Scrooge. It’s heartwarming and I’ve watched it every December since it came out.
I unironically like Jingle all the way.. Granted I haven't seen since I was 10
Best new years movie: LOTR extended edition. You don't have to look at your kids for 9 hours.
Not strictly a new years eve movie, but because it's set on a single hectic night in New York City it actually serves as one fairly well.... Nick and Nora's infinite playlist.
One thing I love about Brandon is that he can reference things like The Christmas Tree in these sorts of discussions.
I knew it. I KNEW from the start that Dan was going to hate on The Muppet Christmas Carol.
"You're the only person in the world that hasn't seen this movie." I haven't even seen the first one, lmao
I would love to hear you talk about 1899! Do you two have any interest in watching it?, and have you watched Dark? (Same creators)
Classic Killers Songs: Don't Shoot Me Santa, The Cowboy's Christmas Ball, and Joel the Lump of Coal. My kids can't stop singing Joel the Lump of Coal.
My children are literally screaming, "What about Home Alone and the Grinch!" I for one am surprised that two 80s kids didn't mention Mickey's Christmas Carol.
Jim Carrey's the Grinch!!!
also, Muppet Scarlet letter with Anna Kendrick has my crying 😂
No mention of the Grinch???
Also the Muppets also did their take on Wizard of Oz-but I’d love to see a Muppets Alice in Wonderland!
In my family thanksgiving movies are Christmas movies. Also my favorite Christmas Carol is the Kelsey Grammer musical version. Same with the Jim Carry one
