Have you read his book The Walking Drum offhand? It was supposed to be the start of a new series set back in the middle ages iirr and I loved it upon first read when I was a teen.
No, it's been on my list for a while and oddly enough, the setting has given me pause. I don't know a lot about the year-to-year specifics of that time period so I would want to do a little history reading before I read historical fiction set there. For example the Alatriste novels by Perez y Reverte are set during the Spanish/Dutch wars of the 1620s. When I first tried to read them in 2005 I had zero knowledge of that conflict or time period. I didn't really revisit the series until just last year. Knowing that the series is contemporary to the Mayflower actually made it make sense.
