When I was only 9 years old my wonderful Dad took me when he went to take delivery of a brand new 1964, Imperial Crown Coupe, that was a met. turquoise, black vinyl roof made with a long grain type material and the softest black leather interior I’ve ever felt. Powered by the quietest 413 V8!

My Dad had a plumb all white interior Crown 2 door hardtop. The day we traded in for a 1970 Imperial we were sorry. It was an awesome car. It owned the road, excellerated slow but once it reached 65 plus mph, it was like soaring on a cloud. 54 years later and still etched in our memories. They don't make them like that anymore. It was a dream lived.

Chrysler Plymouth. Chrysler Dodge. Chrysler DeSoto. Chrysler Dodge
      Truck. Chrysler Chrysler
These cars are not known by the corporate name. They are known by their
individual Division names. Starting in 1955, the same was true of
Imperial. It became it's own division.
      From Wikipedia:
"For the 1955 model year, the Imperial was launched and registered as a
separate marque (make), apart from the Chrysler brand. It was a product
of the new Imperial Division of Chrysler Corporation, meaning that the
Imperial would be a make and division unto itself, and not bear the
      Chrysler name.[1][4]
Chrysler Corporation sent notices to all state licensing agencies in
the then-48 states that the Imperial, beginning in 1955, would no longer
be registered as a Chrysler, but as a separate make ."

The Crown was Imperial's entry level series for 1964 with the Le Baron being the top. If the title lists it as a Chrysler it has been erroneously issued and should be corrected. Once IMPERIAL became a SEPARATE MAKE, The NEW YORKER became the top-of-the-line Chrysler...and IMPERIAL, as a new make, got it's OWN models : THE CUSTOM, THE CROWN, AND THE LeBARON. CHRYSLER, as a make , was a medium-priced car, and it's market competitors were traditionally MERCURY and BUICK. IMPERIAL was a high-priced car, and always competed against CADILLAC and LINCOLN. The Chrysler name always CHEAPENED The Imperial...so, it was decided to SPLIT the Imperial into it's OWN MAKE IN 1955 .

It’s an IMPERIAL! It’s not a “Chrysler Imperial”!

  • @williamg2552
    @williamg2552 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

The correct name of this car is the IMPERIAL Crown Convertible.
The "MAKE" is IMPERIAL. The "MODEL" is "CROWN".
This car is not a "Chrysler"....nor was it advertised , or VINed as one.
IMPERIAL was spun off of the Chrysler Division , and was registered as it's OWN MAKE and DIVISION in 1955.
    From Wikipedia:
"Chrysler Corporation advised state licensing bureaus that beginning in 1955, the Imperial was to be registered as a separate make, APART from the Chrysler brand. It was an attempt to compete directly with GM's Cadillac and Ford's Lincoln distinct luxury-focused marques. Frequently and erroneously referred to as the "Chrysler Imperial", the cars had no "Chrysler" badging anywhere on them, and were a separate, distinct marque, just as Lincoln and Cadillac were for Ford and GM."
Wanna know if the Imperial is a Chrysler or not ? check the VIN numbers.
All of the five Chrysler Corporation makes....indeed ALL cars, carry a ''make" designation code in their VIN numbers.
    Plymouth's was "P". Dodge's was "D" . De Soto's was "S"....and Chrysler's was "C". and IMPERIAL'S was "Y".
All Chrysler models (New Yorker, 300, Newport, Windsor, ETC.) carried a "C" make code.
All IMPERIAL models (Custom, Crown, Le Baron, ) had a "Y" make code.
If the IMPERIAL was a "Chrysler", It too, would have had a "C" make code . But it did NOT.
Thus, it was NOT a Chrysler, but a SEPARATE MAKE

Even the 1956 to 1960 Lincoln and Continental were two different divisions back then but alot of people still call them Lincoln Continental in those years!
