Justin, thank you for being so transparent. You have always been real with your journey. So many times people see the glitz and glamour of a business but never see the hard truths and the mistakes made along the way. Moments like these make the comeback so fruitful. You will bounce back stronger, more prepared and ready to handle things that come. God has a plan and is only ironing these things out now before you take this step to a new level in filmmaking. It's been a rough time in your personal life and while it shouldn't impact your business, you are human bro. These systems you put in place will make sure that things keep going in the right direction and hopefully give you some time back to heal. Prayers up !

“Doing it all yourself is not a flex” .
First and foremost I’m truly sorry for your losses. It really is not easy being a full time entrepreneur , having a business that is heavily relationship based, and being impacted by something outside the business.
I’m glad you touched on this and grateful your clients didn’t try to sue because some people really don’t care and want what they want

    • @JustinPorterMedia
      @JustinPorterMedia  23 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +2

Yea it really is tough. I had a few clients with strong demands and thankfully I was in a position to honor them. I didn’t want to stir the pot too much knowing I had been in the wrong. It’s eye opening seeing how it all led to this. In hindsight it could have been prevented with proper communication.

Grief hits you like a ton of bricks everyday. Big blessings bro! I did weddings 10 yrs ago, and that business was destroyed because of my Vendors and Project Managers. I moved on to something that I do love, and thats cinematography. Keep crushing it bro.

I do a lot of freelance work for businesses locally, but it leans toward social media. Although it’s fun, I’d love to get my foot in the door to that, so what was your journey like?

Duuuuudee! So vulnerable! It’s not easy running a biz and balancing life. And it’s like you said we all fall on our face at some point or another. But it’s like you said can’t go at it alone. The best and worst trait as an entrepreneur is the naivety to believe we can do it all and then we realize we need to be working on our business not in our biz anymore. Shoutout to you for picking yourself up man. If you wanna go fast go alone if you wanna go far go together.

My business failed because of this. As a young 23 year old not really having any business savvy. I even sold all my cameras smh. Going into 2025 rebranding and refocusing, but I've spent the last 3 months refining every process I possibly can, so I CANT fail!
I don't have any answers other than spend time reflecting on your entire process. It is different for everyone. What I did for my lady is ask her questions and have her talk about her business to me while I wrote down what she said. Afterwards, I sent her a document with her entire process broken down step-by-step so we can identify any problem areas and refine it. It's a day to day process, and thank you for your transparency

The truth is Clients want more than anything else to trust. This clarity and humanity is why I'm glad to have been a small part of this journey youve been on. I think the academy have felt every bump and bruise with you and its great to see you rebuild in this way.

Feeling this in my soul. Business has grown over 2x this year along with a new baby, various health struggles & finding out we had 4 weeks to suddenly move house and it's just been drowning/survival mode all year long. Have desperately needed to rework outdated business systems & processes but have barely been able to keep up, much less reinvent my business. I may as well add "sorry for the delay" to my email signature at this point. Being a lone wolf through all of it is the most demoralising part because it feels like you are the total failure and "no one else could possibly be as bad as me" so hearing your real story and not just the highlights was very needed.

Thanks for sharing your struggle. I'm not in this business, but I can relate to having family members who are struggling. In my case it was my daughter. There was a three year period where our family was in survival mode. We made it through and everyone is good now. I agree that you need to prioritize building processes. Block off time in a schedule to take care of the tasks one at a time. You will get through this period and you will be more resilient. You will be better than before because you have gained wisdom from going through it. I look forward to following your progress and seeing more of these authentic experiences you are willing to share with everyone.

Then i hired an editor was hoping he was doing what he was supposed and ended up dragging me farther behind than if i just did it myself
I have many mas clients right now and of coruse only reciews we are getting is when someone is mad. Not the other happy ones
Just keep a chin up and breath slowly - work through the fire and make sure you seek professional mental health assistance because you're going to need someone to help you through it

    Hi Justin!
Firstly thanks for sharing. It’s much appreciated.
I can’t agree and emphasise enough the importance of having a good system in place.
I’m a new wedding filmmaker and through having a good system in place. This year alone I’ve managed to film, edit and deliver 37 Weddings.
    The systems I use:
    Squarespace (Website)
    Google Workspace (For Emails)
    Zapier (Email Automation)
    Freshworks (CRM)
    Xero (Accounting)
    Google Spreadsheets (Finances)
    Airtable (Workflow Dashboard)
    Notion (Video Planning)
DaVinci Resolve Cloud (Collaboration With Contracted Editors)
    And some more random stuff.
Hopefully this helps someone who may be struggling with their systems.
    Books I’d recommend:
Fix this next - Mike Michalowicz
    Profit First - Mike Michalowicz
Who - Dr Geoff Smart & Randy Street

It's hard to grow without delegating. There is a fine line as a single person, or even a small crew, only has so much bandwidth. Honesty is good, but never easy. It's good for you to learn this, even if it's the hard way. What you have been through on a personal level, I can't say I understand because I have not been through all that. On the process side, however, I have seen people fail because they didn't focus on SOPs at the start and decided to just move forward waayy before they should have. Keep your focus and you will succeed, you can't walk forwards while only looking backwards.

I’m considering entering the audiovisual field and I'm trying to decide which camera brand to invest in. Based on your personal experience, which brand would you recommend for long-term growth? For example, starting with something like the Canon R6 Mark II, then progressing to the R5C, and potentially moving to a higher-end model like the C80, or a similar progression with Sony, Nikon, or other brands. What would be your suggestion for a well-rounded and scalable camera system?

    • @JustinPorterMedia
