Indeed! To remain solely inward looking in a state of perpetual naval gazing will only ossify a person, or in this respect a place. History has its place, indeed, and should certainly be regarded but not at the expense of the present (or future). I Heard one of my uncles stories from that era back in 1963 when i was real little about Bluegrass legend Bill Monroe travelling there in his younger days to enter bare knuckle prize fighting contests and winning almost every one of those for the big average prize of $20 and a glass of beer.

That Air Stream @3:07 is worth good 💰. I just googled the Clinch River and it has excellent trout fishing. I truly believe Mac McClung's vertical ability is solely based on the magical water properties of the region.

I forgot that St. Paul exists. Thanks for sharing. I think the towns of Appalachia should consider legalizing gambling in the old mining towns like they have done in Colorado. It is a nice compliment to outdoor recreation. I wish my hometown would do that. I live in Phoenix, AZ, so there isn’t much I can do to help.
There are certainly casinos coming to the region, but not directly into the coalfields per se. Thanks for watching!
As someone that lives in Virginia, specially on the beach, and have traveled through over 50 of these small towns, YOU are correct. I've seen many of these small towns dying off because there isn't much to offer, and the jobs are scarce so the upcoming generation moves away.
Casinos could bring needed life, especially on these small towns that are middle stopping points for bigger towns.
@@knowledge4741 I lived in Denver for a few years, and my firm represented a few of these casinos. If the law doesn’t tie it to something like historic mining towns, it is a few more jobs, but there is no protection. It is like Walmart coming just outside my hometown and pushing stores out of business. If it is tied to something and can only be operated within the town limits, locals profit a lot more with not only jobs but services for the casinos and visitors
I'd rather see something else other than gambling
@@stephanielegarda5443 I understand that, but I haven’t seen anything else be successful, and every year things get worse back there. One good thing about casinos is that they won’t tolerate drug use.

The Clinch is a great river to kayak. Over the years I've paddled all the way from St. Paul to Sneedville, Tenn. A little way downstream from St. Paul the scenery is incredible as the river runs in against some towering bluffs. I highly recommend the area for kayaking.

My mother was born & raised in St Paul .. up on Grayhill .. my Paw Paw & MawMaw lived there whole life in St Paul.
Paw lived to be 92 years old and yes we had 3 generations who retired from the mines as well as some uncles also..

As a resident of St. Paul, we also have the Clinch River Days festival. It usually lasts two days, sometimes three. It's quite peaceful here and most of everyone is easy to get along with. There's also a new coffee shop in town and I believe there's a pastry shop that's been open for a couple of years that I've heard has some good sweet snacks and cakes. It's worth checking out if you're a tourist and like adventure. We also have a ton of wildlife. I even have two raccoons that visit my house normally and one will let me hand feed her but my advice, don't try that with a black bear lol. Just be careful around rivers and creek beds. We have a LOT of snakes and snapping turtles that blend in to the environment perfectly. Other than that and the random brawls that do happen from time to time, it's a nice town!

Great AV of a small town of the coal fields.
Wow, i was in St Paul in the early 90s. We were driving and the road ended. Just ended. It didn't become a dirt or gravel road, it just ended. Its a beautiful place.
They've got some very determined citizens working hard to breathe life and new ideas into their town!
Roads do that sometimes. St Paul has several roads that just end. The main street ends at the school. The road by the park has only one way in and out too.

I’m enjoying these at home on a rainy day in Australia. I’m so glad I stumbled upon your page; I’m always drawn to American infrastructure and the actual real life that goes on besides what you see or hear on the news.
I’ve been to the states twice but with family and only to do the general tourist crap.
I wish to one day get an Rv and travel America.

Glad this town and its residents chose to reinvent itself. My hometown of Silver Creek, NY (near Buffalo) could desperately use the same approach. Sadly, the “woe is me” mentality is deeply entenched there since the NYS Thruway was built in the early 1960’s. Time to stop living in the past, and create a new and vibrant future.

Thanks for the video! My Maternal Great Grandmother owned/ran the Blue Sulphur Hotel in St Paul from 1944-1948. And my Mom graduated from St Paul High in 1947 so this little town has a lot of family ties!!

Enjoyed this video. I love old architecture. It just has so much character. Happy to hear many of the town's historical buildings are still there. It is great the town has and is fighting to stay alive. Loved the drone work and the landscapes. Keep up the great work. Keep them coming.

I’m a Castlewood native and use to work with St. Paul Main Street.
Just FYI the wetlands is pronounced like “es-ton-no-uh” not like the European country.
