I couldn't get reconstructive surgery for my missing right ear until my Junior and Senior years in high school in the late '60s. It consisted of 3 surgeries and the results were terrible. My 'ear' looks like someone slapped an L shaped lump of putty to the side of my head and there's an ugly pale scare behind it. It was felt back then that surgery should be postponed until almost adult and most growth had already occurred.
