I was introduced to this in 1992 and thought it was new stuff.....I'm blown away at the fact that they were indeed churning out classics like this even before I was born😯😯
Best tune REO ever done! I have to blast and turn it wide open! I saw them twice in my life and better when they were older. Right on beat, in Elizabethtown, Ky.
I love Bruce's bass solo at the beginning...saw them twice this year and last when they did it indoors you could feel the ground shaking it was so cool!!!!
I have followed these guys from their days of playing bars in Champaign, IL and throughout their entire and outstanding career to date. REO Speedwagon is in a class by themselves and one of the best bands ever! Keep on doing what you do, you do it well guys! A fan forever from Farmer City, IL ...Dan S.
Good to see these guys still ahving fun and rockin it out. RIP Gary Richrath. Dave Amoto on guitar is a very worthy replacement. Great guy and has been with great bands before,.
REO is like taking a trip in a time machine back when good music rocked the radio on all the hit stations. Great vocalists, I loved when the three sing together. Top instrument playing and stage presence. These guys are pros. Pay attention up and comers.
I wore out a perfectly good cassette tape back in the '80's listening to this song. Couldn't get enough of it then ... and still can't. I want this sucker played at my funeral.
That lead guitarist is no Gary Richrath(RIP) If you have the time google this song when Gary was in the band and you will see its so much better and much more consistent. Gary's solo's always included what the original recording had in it and then he would embellish it some for the live crowd. Each time I hear this song with Dave Amato playing lead, it sounds different. The two solo's Gary did on this song made it epic and you always heard what you were looking to hear. The two solo's Dave does are just random guitar playing.
One of the comments posted by a drummer says; "You have no idea how much sweat and concentration gets put into every song". I think it would be "Doubly Tuff" especially if your deaf as is the drummer for Reo. My hats of to him because he does a tremendous job and I've seen them 3 times with him in the band.
Kevin, Bruce, Neil, Dave and Bryan kick ass again, anytime these guys are on the road don't miss your chance to see them in action, it's one hell of a show everytime!
I ve seen this band 6or 7 times. Always tight. Richrath was a good player. New guitar player gets some bad reviews from some. WHAT?? This guy s a pro, and damn good.
I liked Gary a ton but Joe Amato is a damn fine guitar player and singer. I liked Alan Gratzer on drums too, but this guy Bryan Hitt is really good also. A good professional touring band. And to be honest, they sound like they have more balls here than in the past. A bit heavier.
Dave is a good guitarist that's really not an issue. For me the issue is his stripping the songs of Gary's essence. Most of REO's songs have a solo or 2 from Gary and the songs were created with him in mind. So to go in and remove that from the song or change it, just seems wrong on so many levels. "Back on the Road Again" has 2 very distinctive solo's that for me are "instrumental", no pun intended, in the latter part of the song. I always listen for those solo's and specifically the way they are done because Gary did them so great. He always kept the basic structure of the original song intact. Dave changes them so much that they are totally different and unrecognizable from the way they were originally done. Plus he does it differently each time so it's almost as if he is just noodling when he is doing the solos. That seems wrong. At any rate, I know Dave has some big shoes to fill, that much is true, that being said, he is a good enough guitarist that he should be able to keep the basic structure of the REO songs intact. I know many people are biased because they love Gary and feel he was shafted out of REO. This makes it more difficult for Dave. For me it's like this...If you take over Lead Guitar for one of the most prolific rock bands of the 1980's you really have a responsibility to preserve the memory of the songs as they were originally recorded. It's really that simple. Changing them can be looked at as disrespectful. The concept of changing them by itself isnt disrespectful. Artists do that to other artists songs all the time when they cover a song. This is disrespectful because it's the original band doing the changing and when fans pay money to come and hear their favorite band play but they dont get what they paid for, that to me is a problem. Anyway, I digress. Sorry this got so long. I just happen to have a more personal connection to the band that I cant go into now, that's all.
Learned this one when it was brand new off of the Nine Lives album in about '80. Bruce Hall, the bass player song that has served them well for gosh...42 years now. Long time on the road.
Reo Speedwagon Rocks! Moondance Jam Rocks! 2 awesome things at the same time! Hey REO if you happen to read this - Please come back to Moondance Jam in 2020!
ok i know reo and all rock n roll groups from this time . is getting older !!! But this is very good Bruce Hall is the man .doing bass and singing this great song, as it has been !!! well done !!!
OK...so many of you are clearly not true REO fans. Dave Amato is no longer the "new guy". He's been in the band for 24 years! That's longer than Richrath! He was in the band 19 years, from 1970-1989. And some of you don't even know Bryan Hitt!?! He started the same year as Dave (1989). Face it...Richrath screwed up and REO kept truckin' without him. You'll be hard pressed to find another band that has had the same lineup for 24 years that performs as such a finely oiled machine.
One of my all time favorites! This song along with 2 others Roll with the Changes and Keep Pushing so helped me through a very troubled time in my life! These 3 songs are all time favorites! The Lyrics so fit my life at that time! Thanks REO
I played this song on bass in my high school talent show, over 35 years ago. I still remember how to play it, but can't remember what I did yesterday. lol
Well Kevin said it all..They were ready to rock their collective balls off. High energy, hard driven Rock And Roll. REO at their best. If you haven't seen them live you gotta put them on your list for a loud rockin experience you'll never forget. ;). YEAH YAEH BABY!
Who thinks this is better than the album version? Cuz this is just pure badass. I watched this on DirectTV one day in the summer back in '10 found myself coming to TH-cam. Favorited it, and come back every so often to blare this through my stereo. This song isn't long enough.
No need to be negitive Neal, REO rocks and it takes all five of them to create REO, so if you can't be positive about them just don't say anything and go away.
If you think this guy's guitar solo's are gods gift to humanity then you haven't heard Gary Richrath's solo's. Gary Was The original lead and his playing was epic!!! If you have the time do TH-cam search for "REO Speedwagon full live 1982". This concert is REO at its best! The song on this video "Back on the Road Again" is about 3/4 of the way through the 1982 video. But I would encourage anyone listening to listen to the whole thing. If you weren't an REO fan before listening to that video you will be after. Specifically listen for Gary's solo's. He was the master at doing a pic slide up the neck of the guitar and that sound became part of the REO sound. Until Dave Amato took over in 1989. For some reason he just can't do a pic slide without it sounding like some awful screeching sound. The best song to compare those two guys with is "Keep on Loving You". The concert I recommended above has one from Gary so if you can find one if Dave just compare it and you will see Gary's playing is definitely God's gift to humanity.
REO sold out. But this was from when they kicked serious ass! One of my top ten songs ever recorded! This version gives me friggin' goosebumps! Absolutely awesome!

Say what you will about Dave not living up to Gary, but you have to admit he kicks ass during this song!!
I’ve always liked it when bands let another member showcase their singing other than the lead vocalist.

This is probably my favorite song of REO Speedwagon. They are outstanding live. And that lead guitarist is - wow!
