It would be nice to see what you did for the top of the hive, and how to accommodate the upper entrance door for venting. We are in Manitoba and most of the insulation videos seem like a joke for our winters.

Awesome looks great. I am running to home depot and buy plastic and insulation . Thanks for the info ... Just bought what I needed . Plastic roll was in the paint section . r20 pink insulation cost me 46.20 and plastic roll hdx 55.77 , Already did one cover. Was pretty easy to do. I sealed all one side with the heat gun and just taped the middle . Works great and I have allot left for many hives.

Forgive my arriving late. Diving into this today. The video is logical, easy to understand. Love it. I do wonder if the trick/tip of squeezing air out results in an R-value reduction. I won't worry about that now. Gotta get to work.

William, its my understanding the R-Value on the sides is not important as long as its less than the top. The insulation makes a barrier from heat loss from the wind much like wearing gloves. I use a homemade top ventilation box 4+ inches deep with a round top feeder, I cut fiberglass insulation R13 to fill the top air space and my bees do very well in the winter w/o a wrap. Note: I am using ANEL insulated hive bodies as an experiment and the top feeder is warm in the early morning under the insulation blanket.. I believe a Hive Cozy or any other insulation has benefit in cold regions.

Awesome video! Is that plastic the 6mil stuff you can find at Home Depot? Is there a brand name?

it doesnt actually give me the thickness. The brand will also likely be different event though i did in fact get this at home depot because this one is a Product of Canada. HDX is the brand, they make lots of different products, And it says "Heavy" across the bag.
Thanks. I plan to make all my own hive wraps this year.

HDX is actually Home Depot's house brand I think. We have that in the States. Is this the stuff? www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-10-ft-x-100-ft-Black-6-mil-Plastic-Sheeting-CFHD0610B/204711639

      Or this? www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-10-ft-x-25-ft-Black-3-5-mil-Plastic-Sheeting-RSHD3510-25B/204711650

this one, mine came in a bag like the other one but it was 10ft x 100ft. I have a suspicion this is actually 3 mil .. but do it in 6mil if you have access to it. The give away is the weight. mine doesnt say 6mil but has a weight of 12 lb , the one here has a weight of 28 lbs... im roughtly half the weight, so i likely have 3 mil.

you better hope Trump doesnt rip up NAFTA , this says "product of canada, Distrubuted by Home Depot, Atlanta GA" :P .. You need to tell me what yours says if you pick one up.. i dont believe they make all HDX for home depot here. must be a generic label Home depot can put on any product meeting the spec.

Neat! Luckily I don't have to do that here in the moderate climate of Northern California. It gets cold but not that cold.

California is down right tropical compared to here in winter. it can reach -40*F with windchill at times. its pretty amazing really that the bees make it at all.
