I grew this in S AZ this year. It did not produce any fruit at all during hot summer but grew rampantly and completely covered the trellis and tried to take over all plants in area. It developed a lot of powdery mildew in mid summer so I cut it to ground. It came back from ground and in fall produced some fruit.
I believe the spikes are natural defense against pests, rodents, etc. You definitely wouldn't want one thrown at you! Lol. Remember how dry and hot it was this summer? I never once saw any leaves wilting and no issue in full sun in a raised bed. No pests at all. I managed to get almost 100 fruit of two or maybe three vines by the trellis. Very prolific and no fuss. Definitely worth playing around with.

Had no idea what they were or that they would grow here, thanks
Do you think the spikes would deter pests? What is the water requirements? Could be an alternative to the water hungry cucumber.
