Yep. And many of the comments say how she couldn't possibly be homeless coz her hair & clothes are clean. I'm homeless and care for myself. I can show you my pic on Instagram, you'd never think I'm either disabled to the point of wishing to die every night, nor that I'm sleeping in my 20yo car entire Rona just to be near my dying Mom (all apartments here are above my SSDI earnings + all landlords require you to make 3 times the monthly rent, and NO ONE on disability can do that. HUD/Sec8 is hard to come by, I've been on every list for years now).
I hope she spends that money gotten from trusty kind people on medication. That's all.

Strangers have given me money and food so many times. I think it was because I never asked, I just looked pathetic without realizing it. One lady gave me 80 bucks when I was alone in a cafe around Christmas and had an argument with my mom on the phone. People kept thinking I was blind because I'm autistic and walk with a cane (I would correct them though when possible). Although I've been homeless, I usually had somewhere to live, but it was often unbearable to hang out there, so I used to spend a lot of time wandering the streets dragging my possessions behind me.

Are you doing okay now? Do you have all you need?
During 2020 fires in my area, two friends from Twitch sent me money without me asking. I cried for days. They didn't know it at the time, but that money allowed me to house my very ill mother in a motel instead of on the floor at the local fire shelter center. She couldn't even get on the floor if you paid her.
Another lady also from Twitch crocheted me a pillow, and yet another sent a book + a little care package that warmed my heart no end.
I've never met any of them irl, but it doesn't matter.. i consider them friends and sisters.
They'll be getting presents this Christmas, if I can only manage to drive to post office. I'm determined to somehow repay their kindness, no matter if it's 2yrz later. Just wish I could buy them something like a vacation, but it's gonna be much, much smaller scale gifts.

In the UK we’re told not to give the homeless money but offer to buy them food/water instead. I think for the most part it’s to prevent donations being used for drugs, but I’ve never considered until now that it could also prevent this.

Honestly I don't care if someone would use the cash I gave them to buy drugs. Obviously it's bad to be addicted to drugs, but addiction recovery is complex, long, and difficult especially when you're dealing with the stress of being homeless. A small single donation probably isnt going to a big difference for them either way for recovery in the long term, so if they bought drugs with the money and it helped them get a night or a few hours of peace or easing their pain, I still feel I've done a good thing.
I was also generally taught to offer to buy food or water instead of money too, but I just don't care what they do with it (......as long as they're actually in need, looking at you lady). If they really need it and are desperate, whatever they spend it on is going to be helpful for them whether that's physically, mentally, etc.
Socks/underwear are a desperately needed item so if you aren't comfortable giving out money maybe you could buy and keep some in the car or in your bag to offer. I used to also carry about individually prepackaged granola, protein bars etc but I know a lot of homeless people don't trust being given food like that because there's awful horrible people out there who've deliberately poisoned food and drinks they gave out to the homeless to hurt and kill them just because they're homeless :(

Story time with Spoot: I was doing a lot of hard drugs at the age of 19, lost my friends, family and finally my place to live. I ended up homeless in Connecticut in late march (VERY cold). So I asked a friend to take a road trip with me to Georgia. I stayed in GA to live on the Appalachian Trail when he headed back to CT. I had minimal supplies no money and no choice I just had to make it work. Sitting outside places I would stop to rest at, people would make conversation and ask me about my trip so far. I would explain my situation honestly, but never once held a sign, asked for money, or even insinuated that I needed help. Simply said "ah just taking a lonesome venture to get clean and start new. Figuring things out as I go." Maybe it was because I was visibly young or maybe it was the fact I had in interesting story but people would come out of the store with bags of food and supplies to just hand to me and say "good luck, stay safe". Many people handed me cash on top of the things they bought. Many times I was holding back tears as these people not only helped me through these hard times, they sympathized and gave me advice and directions or info on good places to stay and clean up. Stranger hospitality is very very real and I quite literally might not be here to type this if it wasn't for the kindness of strangers. It breaks my heart into a million pieces to see people taking advantage of that kindness. I'm in a much better position now. I'm 25 and found work in pro hockey so anytime I see someone down on their luck I give what I can. I wont stop giving even though there's a chance that person is like this lady and I stress to all of you to please keep giving and don't let this effect that. Most people out there really truly relish that dollar or two.

Thank you for sharing your story, Spoot! I have shared mine somewhere here too .. current homeless due to disabilities & dying Mom.. I'm sleeping in a 20yo car & need an expensive surgery. I look just as "normal" and clean as her, but never would do what she's doing. Not even in war did we scam people.. we helped each other, and that's how most of us survived. (Bosnia, 90s. I was 14 when it started, 17 when we came to US and i had to start working, driving and being head of the family). From civil engineer to homeless just coz of illness i did nothing to bring on. But I still give, still drive other homeless in my city to thrift stores.. some are mean to each other, some are generous to a fault. Last night i couldn't get myself a drink or food, so I gave a homeless friend (whom i met by chasing him around thinking he's a thief, lol) some $ and tried to let him keep the change. He wouldn't. I insisted. Just as he was leaving, he tosses something into my car & drives off. It was the rest of the money I gave him & asked him to keep (coz at this moment his need is greater than mine, at least until the 3rd). He only bought himself a pack of cigs. That's all he'd accept, and I know for a fact he doesn't even have enough to fill up his gas tank.. which he used to get me the vitamin water I wanted. There's bad apples in every group of people wherever you look... including houseless. But there's also heart, integrity and conscience in many of us. I've had 2 homes in my life, now that's a car. I'm still the same person, with all the same principles, ethics and morals.
Don't be fast to judge, you never know what someone is going through (houseless or not). If you give, give from the heart not expecting anything in return. People like this scammer woman are gonna regret it (i sound like dharman, lmao). I just say let it be on them if they scam me. My intention was pure. I give when i can and don't ask what they'll buy with it. Look at every big charity, and the money distribution of theirs. Directors get SOOOOO much, while a very little percentage goes to help those in need. This one woman cannot possibly scam more than they do, but we don't talk about that.

To those who call me a bad mom, that I must be on drugs, that I should have known better, that I’m lazy for watching some TH-cam videos to pass some time (even though you all are here too? I can have some breaks as well?), you are all so off base. I hope you never face hard times and hear such spiteful and downright ignorant words thrown at you. Obviously the DV was gradual, I was working before and not “leeching” off my ex, not everyone who needs help is a drug or alcohol user (that kind of thinking just makes it harder for people in hard times, just like the lady in this video), and… I couldn’t get out for myself, but I got out for my children.
Best wishes to everyone. Please spread positivity, not hate. ❤️

Right outside our store, a homeless man would sit on a crate between our store and the subway everyday asking for money. I’d always give him a dollar or two before I entered the store to start my shift. I’d also give him a cup of water and free coffee and donuts whenever he asked. He was always grateful for what I gave him. During my last few months there, he stopped coming at his spot and I assumed something bad happened to him. Damn, Charlie... I’m sorry that happened to you. I was homeless for a long time after I got home from Iraq, but I’m not anymore because of the VA. Any veteran who tells you they’re homeless has options for getting out of the situation and being housed. It’s a program called HUD VASH (VA Supported Housing) the VA will pay up to $625/month for your rent, along with a utilities allowance check at the beginning of every month. This program has no time limits whatsoever, so a veteran can be in it for as long as they need the assistance. During your time in the program, they will assign an employment specialist to assist you in finding a permanent job to provide steady income for you. Any veteran who remains homeless is doing so either because they were dishonorably discharged and lost their VA benefits or is refusing to meet the requirements of the program (no alcohol in the household, no drugs/paraphernalia, no criminal activity of any kind, etc. Not unreasonable requirements. If you encounter a veteran that is homeless, direct them to the nearest VA facility, do NOT give them monetary assistance at all.

Way more likely to be the kind of homeless to have a gym membership for showers and a steady job, but still show up to church lunches and get the stink eye. I used to think badly of them, too, because they didn't look like they had it as bad as I did. They didn't, but it's not a competition. Gatekeeping is everywhere lol.

tbh, as someone who’s mother was homeless through my teen years, i would challenge you to possibly rethink that mindset a little bit. i understand why and buying usable goods instead is totally fine and all, but just wanted to give an alternate perspective:
my mother was very lucky to get some money from many kind people, and she built up that cash and used it to do her laundry for her job interview and, a while later after getting the job, pay her first down payment on her apartment! for a lot of people, cash means they can get themselves a cheap hotel room, a hot meal, laundry, medicine, etc., but i also understand it also can mean the salary of a professional scammer in places where that happens.
there’s absolutely nothing wrong with what you’re doing or even why you’re doing it, though, just wanted to pass on an experience that made me personally change my mind!

My eyes were opened by two experiences. One was when my grandma showed me how people in the city had been fakers. The second was in winter, where there was an obviously homeless man who was not pan handling. My stepmother bought him hot food and a hot coco. The man burst into happy tears and thanked her. Since those experiences, I now offer food instead of cash, and that is how I've learned to pick out the fakers. The fakers almost never accept the offer of food. I actually had a faker scoff at me because I offered to buy them a meal and then they said only cash would help them.

Thankfully her boyfriend at the time used to be homeless and he panhandled one time to help us not be evicted. One day of doing this he made around $700. My mother and I have dealt with similar situations, some dude got 10$ from my mom and she watched him for about 20-30mins cause he was asking for enough money to get water and food, man goes in the gas station and comes out with beers. So, clearly not hurting much for money.
Our way of figuring out who is who, typically but doesn't always work, is asking if they'd like something to eat rather than money.
I was getting gas myself after stopping to get pizza, the only cash I had was spare change from getting the food and this older gentleman wanders up and asks for enough change to get himself a hotdog cause what he had was too little. Flagged him down after getting gas and offered him the biggest slice of pizza I could manage to convince him to take (these were Xxl slices, like four regular pieces in one), then went back to my car and waited a bit cause I was doing something on my phone, but I remember looking up and seeing him come out with a bottle of water to have with the pizza.
My heart still goes out to him and I wish I knew where he went, hope the best for him.

I would never do something like this but when he told me about the value proposition I doubted myself if I wanted to go back to that burger flipping job for (at the time) $12 an hour or if I should just join this asshole sitting on a street corner and make more money on average. $15 an hour for these minimum wage jobs is better then it was, but not enough. frankly we need to address the minimum wage.

I went and got a new iPhone and everything but then they were saying it needed a special program on it and wanted me to send it to them to put it on there then they’d send it back. It's something I've definitely thought about before, but the thought of taking money that I feel I didn't earn makes me physically ill, especially when there are a lot of people out there who need it more than I do. I've just been holding out hope that things will improve and I'll find another option, but at the same time I know that I've been really fortunate already to have gone for so long without work and not already be out on my ass. It's just a really damn tough pill to swallow, because I truly want to be someone who contributes to society and not takes from it... I really hope that people like the woman in the video never have to experience what it's actually like to be hard up without options and to be physically unable to control your own destiny, even though you actually would do anything just to be able to get out and do an honest day's work.

Now my clothes weren't all dirty and stuff cause fortunately i had friends who would let me do laundry once in a while. This one lady got all mad saying i wasnt homeless and that i was a fake. It hurt me cause at the time i was sleeping on a dirty mattress that i had found in an alley next to a dumpster. Then one day, while im waking up in the morning, i heard someone walking up to my little clubhouse that i had made with cardboard boxes. The person pulls the tarp i used to cover everything aside and it turns out to he the lady that called me a fake. When she saw me she started to cry. She apologized and tried to give me 100 bucks. I didn't want to take it though cause i felt she was only giving it to me cause she felt bad. I didnt feel like it was genuine. After this interaction though she would stop by every other day and bring me food. She would apologize everytime for what she said and would say a prayer for me before she left and always tried to give me money, begging me to take it. I finally took it one time but as i did i told her, "next time you see someone who claims to be homeless, try to give them the benefit of the doubt. You don't know how hard they are struggling even if they are dressed like they aren't." Im not homeless anymore and I work at a Starbucks. I still see that lady every now and then and when she leaves she always leaves me a 10 dollar tip and says she is proud of me for getting off the streets.

I’m disabled and experienced homelessness throughout my life, shit like this lady just takes away from real people suffering and makes us look bad when we actually are asking for real deal help. I’ve been without my wheelchair for over a year now and barely have been able to raise enough for a new one and I only need 2,000. Seeing frauds make thousands and thousands kills me.

This is actually very common where I live in Brazil. People even fake having a broken leg or some other injurie. Most of them make this a job and have better apartments than lots of people who gave money to them. It's truly ridiculous.
And they ask specifically for money... there was this time a lady bought coffee and a sandwich for a guy, and he threw the coffee on her legs, I remember she screamed because it burned her.

I grew up in a trailer park, and all my jobs have been mostly shitty retail and fast-food stuff. Almost all the vehicles I've ever drove were junkers that I bought under a grand with the help of car-savvy parents. My most high-paying job was my most recent; a stocking position that I was very, very good at, but had to quit because no one in my household has a vehicle that's capable of safely traversing the interstate highway, and I'm currently jobless while living with my mother and brother as I approach middle-age.
It's because I'm well-aquatinted with poverty and bad situations that I've always forked over a twenty *cough*get that genocidal maniac off of our money *cough* to those with a sign at the side of the road if I had it. Seeing that 'homeless person' get into a car that freaking nice just makes me feel . . . violent.

see, the way I avoid giving homeless people money, but also helping them out is just offering to buy them food or something to drink.

4:40 :[ i feel you, i learnt a similar lesson, when my parents were looking for work, and they would take sandwiches with them on the long walks through the city canvasing. I was with them when my mother kindly gave half our food to this poor homeless kid/teenager and his dog, and went to turn back to give them some money when she saw him feeding all the food to his dog, not even splitting it.
The rule learnt was, if you want to be nice to a homeless person, you offer to take them to get food, instead of giving them money, if they refuse they must not be after money for food.

    • @TheFirstAtom

Don’t offer to take them anywhere; that’s how people end up killed. You give them a gift card or something that they can’t use anywhere but where the gift card is meant to be used.

Because of stories like your first one, I have a rule: ONLY give panhandlers/beggars food or water. If they're actually homeless or in need, that food or water will really help them out, but if they aren't, you didn't put money towards their addictions or scams.
Keep some shelf stable granola bars or something in the car, easy to hand out and nothing that can melt.

Sadly, I don't think this is helpful anymore. I've heard stories of homeless people receiving glass sandwiches and poisoned water. Because of this I bet many of them refuse to take these things. Right now I only give out items that cannot be resealed, like cans of sparkling water (the only water I could find in a can not a bottle).

As a person who was homeless up until 5 months ago, the first reply is true. We've had people give some... Shady food. And drinks, especially as a woman, because who knows if it was tampered with and I'd be roofied and followed... But what I can tell you is canned foods, gas station/fast food gift cards (if you worry they'll pawn it for drugs, get low amounts that'll be good for one or two meals). Also, SOCKS. And boxers for men, any clothes really. homeless people go through those like they're disposable. Cannot stress that enough. We used to get too many toothbrushes lol, so that's usually not needed. Just chiming in on behalf of the homeless people who really do need help. I wouldn't give homeless people money either because I know where it's going 99% of the time, but everyone deserves to have their basic necessities, even addicts.

Apart from the real homeless I did encounter I also came across the grifters. There was one, always stinking of booze and ripened human filth that hugged the streets to aggressively ask for money. He once took seat across me in the bus and started talking to me, about prostitutes no less, that he liked to visit whenever he had some extra cash. It was disgusting. I had hardly reached adulthood and was still looking like a minor at the time.

Saw a dude panhandling at Walmart years ago. One day I saw him walking home. He lived by my mom. lol
Next time I saw him I made a sign and stood in front of him calling him out. At the very bottom, "Got any beer?"
Someone actually gave me money. Then I just gave it to someone else.
A different time I shoved a pillow under my shirt and held a sign saying "Pregnant. Need Booze". The faces I got were amazing. One dude stopped to take a pic. lolol
