What a heartwarming video. I bought 14 acres of grassland in Nth Cumbria in 2003, and dumped my job. It's been an arduous journey to single-handedly change it into woodland and a small veg garden with polytunnel over the years (planning authories, locals et al). I've finally got permission to build a few strawbale & cob guest dens too. Now I'm self sufficient in woodfuel and charcoal, and bottle/dry most of my food (I'm off grid and can't freeze) and wouldn't ever go back to my old life. If you're really going to do this with plenty of years to enjoy it, take that leap of faith and burn some bridges....don't leave it until you retire or you may never get there.

I am 66 years old, I have 13 beds, and quite fruits trees. I canning everything is posible, I made the tomato sauce for a whole year, I only have 0.2 acres. I manage two crops every year! When I hear 👂 you talking remind myself so much. We bought the house in 2018 buy very little from the store. Love to see your animals! My concentration it was in microbiology too. LOL 😂!

    Hello Liz
I can't tell you how timely this video is for me. I too am not young (66 and beginning to feel it!) and have never had a garden as such although I've always dreamed. I'm now buying a plot of land (only little, 1000m²) with 2 tiny derelict houses and hope to move in May next year. I live in NW Turkey and am on my own now but thankfully have some good friends who will help me when needed. There are moments when I think 'oh my word whatever have I done?' but this video along with yours and Huw's have really given me the encouragement to believe I can do it!
Sorry for the long missive. All the best
    Davut (Dave)

I was 55 and always had a veg garden of some sort.Gardening is the best mental health treatment available. My husband died suddenly just 4 months into the start of the business. I was very busy but very satisfied and I would not be mentally as good as I am now given various traumas in my life not least th sudden death of my husband and during lockdown here hss been my saviour. I can related what she's saying. before, when I live where there is this small plot of land I can grows, I grow so many vegetables, before sleep I always wishing morning would come sooner so I can get back to my garden again. I really missed those times a lot. Moving to new place, where no place for me to do gardening I really stressed out. Now I'm focusing on finding stuff that I can enjoy at this age now that I can't gardening by doing a lot of cooking and baking and knitting and sewing to fill my time and learning editing too but still searching for channels which do gardening like your. Love watching people enjoying gardening life like I do. Thank you for sharing. Now I added your channel to my favorite too so when I missed my garden I can get here and watching yours instead. 🥰

I’m from Alberta too and always wondered how to grow food here given extreme winters. Good to hear you have made it possible!

Thank you, thank you thank you, all you girls and guys that openly share your knowledge, your trials, tribulations and successes, it is really inspiring. You are living your life in a way that at the moment I can only dream of. But every so often I come across a film or a channel that says "you can do this". Thank you Liz and Saronne for being so thoughtful, considered and inspiring and all you wonderful people like Huw Richards, Charles Dowling, MI gardener and countless ( I cant get over how many generous people in this area of life there are ....) others that are helping people like me to believe that we are not stupid for going against the grain, that growing your own food in a responsible way can be rewarding, productive and sustaining .... know that what you are doing matters. ... far beyond your own awareness. Love from Australia

What I didn't tell you about this video, is that Saronne gave me ALL of the tomatoes that she picked while I was filming this video and they were delicious!

Very relatable for me as a mid-60s retiree very, very excited about my garden and what it’s growing for us. Herbs and easy vegetables first, but ever expanding choices to experiment with techniques. It’s really amusing to bring in what seems like a small harvest when I’m in the garden only to realize I’ve gotten a big load and I’d better get busy with cooking, preserving, drying, and sharing. Six acres is a much larger than we have, but we still have great abundance, and I’m very grateful, indeed.

I’ve been following Saronne for a little while now and love what she has achieved on her smallholding. I’m particularly envious of the tomatoes as most of ours have been blighted this year. Thank you for sharing:)
