Korg opsix: Buiding a West-Coasty, Buchla Music Easel-esque patch using User Algorithms

- In a previous video ( • Can you build a Juno i... ) I explored the idea of building a Juno-style synth architecture within the opsix by making use of the user algorithms and operator modes. While that was a fun exercise and demonstrates the principle nicely, with all of the varied operator modes, it is arguably a little...safe?
So in this video I'm going to get a little more weird (a direction I will always endorse in electronic music), and apply similar thinking to build something approaching a west-coast, Buchla-y, Music Easel-esque architecture and a "Krell" style patch.

Learning about buchla style synthesis has made me a better subtractive synthesist. I think less linearly and more experimentally about music in general now. I don’t have a West Coast synthesizer but learning about the techniques and how they work - opens up new ideas to approach subtractive synthesis in different creative ways!
Yes, this, a million times. Almost all knowledge in electronic music is transferable, there's always something you can apply elsewhere. A lot of how I treat my Ekekron boxes these days comes directly from what I've learnt from using modular for example!

Thank you! I've said it before and I'll say it again: I know why Korg described this synth as an "Altered FM" synth, but I maintain that they're selling it short with that description, it's far deeper than that.

Just gotta thank you for these inspirational videos on the opsix. I’ve debated returning it for some other more expensive synths but the variety and capabilities that you show have changed my mind. It really is an interesting and powerful machine.

It really is - I had it out on my desk again for the first time in a while last night, and the depth of its synthesis is kinda staggering.

In these "Take Five" , and "Nymphes" times - i GOT the OPsix - and YOU , and t the "Can you build a Juno wiyh the OPsix" . and THIS video , is THE mainreason i BOURGHY it ! - I remember you said to me , that if i was REALLY interested - youd teach me some trick´s AND ill be DAMN´ed if i dont take you up on your word !!! - Do know that You and Lolpop and ofcourse Jay Hosking , are big influences on ALL i do with synths ! and thank you for the way you are being you !
Ducks in space. Awesome patch architecture. Eventually, after 4 hours, I managed to upgrade FW 2.01. Incredible possibilities. This synths is as deep as space itself. 😊 Thank you for sharing.

Thanks - it was suggested to me in the comments after I drew some diagrams on white paper that were absolutely unreadable because the camera washed them out. I like how these look on camera, and unlike something computer generated in post, I can point at stuff as I explain.
I find your videos very informative and helpful on my journey with my opsix. One thing I miss from this video is turning the frequency knobs on operators. Which when is set to fixed mode sounds more authentic as a structure to a buchla. Giving millions of overtones and beating frequencies. Again I much appreciate your time to put this together. Thanks for all your opsix videos out here ;)

A thoroughly enjoyable voyage into another fascinating dimension of this wonderful synth. Thank you! I wondered whether you would save the patch after you made the initial "Buchla Template" setup, so as to be able to use it as a starting point for other ideas. Could be an idea to note for anyone reading this who wants to try this for themselves. The user algorithm allows for a lot of flexibility, and I have to admit I'd never thought of using it to make "circuits" with VCAs in them, as you did here. Quite a revelation.
The patch that I've shared in the video description - if you go onto the vpatch and remove everything but the first two slots (and clear the sequencer), then that should get you to a "empty" version of the patch that you can take forward and explore. You can also swap the modulation source on those first two to Envelope 1 if you'd rather not have the cycling functionality (if you do that then you should set the sustain of Envelope 1 to full if you want an 'authentic' patch to work with).
The "VCA" trick is pretty powerful, but you have to balance it against losing an operator to doing something more interesting - but in some patches, having that VCA control will be the interesting use case I suppose!

If I didn't know this was produced with a digital synth, I would think it was some kind of analog 60s experimental synth. I think the spring reverb effect helps a lot.
The opsix can get as experimental as you like!

I joked in the comments of your “Alien Soundscapes” episode about how it sold me on the Opsix much like your NDLR video sold me on the NDLR (literally, the reason I bought the NDLR - and now a second NDLR on the way). This Buchlaesque tutorial is the reason I’ve actually just ordered an Opsix.

While I don't see an opsix in my future, this is some excellent work! It inspires me to get a Korg Volca FM2 which is within reach, and see how far I could get in this direction. What do you think? Somewhat feasible? Really enjoy the sounds you've gotten!
Sadly for *this* example you'd really struggle with a Volca FM2. It's a fine synth for the money, but it's very much sat in the DX7 way of doing FM and all the user algorithms, operator modes and flexible modulations simply aren't there.
If you're looking in that price range for these sorts of sounds and patches, I would probably look towards either the Microfreak - not exactly the same thing, but it has some of that "West Coast" philosophy in there, as well as flexible oscillator types and a mod matrix; or the Volca Modular which is very inspired by the Buchla way of thinking and replicates basically the same architecture as I build here.

There's a link to the preset in the video description, which you can load into an opsix if you have one? Otherwise, you might have to just sample the end of the video when I shut up for a bit!
Oscillator Sink can a cycling envelope be achieved much like a fake pulse wave(like fake pulse width) on the Digitone?

Final result reminds me of drumming. Have you built any interesting drum machine patches?
I've done some, yes. A lot of stuff based around filter pinging. You can borrow ideas from 'building drums from parts' in modular.
Am I am doing something wrong? I have to go to MISC quite often during my eperiments at some point I again have to say YES to edit.... ? Is that normal or do I miss something?
To edit the User Algorithm? Yes that's normal.

I downloaded your Easel patch and it shows up where I downloaded it but the OP6 doesn't see it when I try to merge it to my hardware....any help appreciated
What have you tried so far?
Have you sent the bank back to the synth? Once you've added it in the librarian, you have to send it back over to the hardware.
Are you running the most up to date firmware?

How about building a prophet 5!!!???
That would be fairly similar to my Juno patch I think, but you'd get rid of the high pass, and use it to act as a VCA between the two oscillators to do FM. And have a wider range of waveforms on the two oscillators too.
Maybe a quick tutorial on how to create the vca and add the waveforms??? Fingers crossed *

@@granderlavail6836 I talk about and use the VCA concept in this very video. Around 06:25 I start talking about why I need them (basically the same idea as you'd need in the P5) and go on to show how to set them up in the User Algorithm. The different waveshapes are just selecting the appropriate waveshapes for the relevant operators, that's all.
Its too bad that the spring reverb on the opsix does not sound like a spring reverb at all..
I've heard worse - if you want really good digital spring emulations though, the Source Audio algorithms are *chef's kiss*
