This song really touches my heart and soul. To listen to the words and think of going to hell and your family going to heaven without you is very painful. It means we have to serve God here and be ready at any time He calls. THANK YOU.
Just heard this again, last time I heard it was when I was a little child and I'm 55 now. Brings back memories when my mom played it all the time in 70s. It got my full attention then and now that I turned to the Lord, it doesnt scare me anymore! Thank you Jesus.
I grew up with this song! My dad had this record and sang it in church many times. I used to cry at the last verse every time he sang it. I can't wait to hear this dear sweet lady sing it in glory!
This is the first gospel song to ever sell a million copies and it's easy to see why. Still one of the greatest songs in gospel music history. Rest in peace to mrs. Naomi and all the other original sego brothers. Thanks for your great legacy and heritage you left for us to follow.
Southern Gospel Music includes The Segos with Naomi were the first to move their music from Vynal to Digital CD in the late 70s early 80s. The reason in my opinion is Southern Gospel Music was recorded in and around Nashville. Of course, back then, I remember on late Friday Nights, the Grand Ole Opry would go from Country to having Southern Gospel Acts preform live and on 650 WSM. As a kid in the 70s, I love to DX on AM, but we lived 30 minutes from Downtown Nashville, WSM-AM's Transmitter was in Brentwood, TN, so I would filp on WSM and hear Gospel Music on the Grand Ole Opry. Oh Yes, I loved Opryland and I miss the Park here in Nashville!
Mother had Gospel programs on theTV every Sunday morning. This song was sung every Sunday morning for a long time. I heard this song so often while waiting for mother and my sister to get ready for church, I knew it by heart. It is a heart-rending recording from Naomi and the third verse brings tears to my eyes, still.
The seago brother's & Naomi,.... Wow,.....there was a time when music,...Gospel music had a message. The idea of songs of south,.this gives way .comes to the term,....(southern Gospel ) A lot of these songs got their starts in Holiness Churches ,any place that preached hell so hot your seat almost caught fire. These are the churches I love. The spirit of Almighty God Was therr,....The preaching was right down the line. The songs also had a CONVICTION TO THEM, church we've come a long way,....BUT IN THE WRONG DIRECTION. Fred seago was always on naomi's right.....he played guitar for the group until his passing. slowly the rest went to be with the lord as well. Naomi remarried after a few years her last name is Reeder. This woman,...with the anointing that was placed on few in those days,...vestal goodman,...labreiska Hemphill, and Dottie rambo, God used the conviction power many people got saved.... But where has it all gone....? this stuff now is ok,....I guess.... but church we.need to get on the old path that works again. love the music, evangelist jerry f.miller
Yes indeed, I grew up back in those days, in those churches...and we all sang with conviction, these wonderful old gospel songs. Have loved Naomi and the Segos since I first heard this record. Thank you for this information.
She could definitely sing. Watched this group on Sunday morning along with other groups when i was a kid in the 60's. Singing Caravan and Gospel Jubilee were two programs I never missed on Sunday. Back then there was no Southern Gospel, Contemporary Gospel et cetera. It was all Gospel Music.
Yes, those were the days of gospel songs just like my mountain family and my country church sang. I love the Gaithers and all those more recent groups, but the old days were special.
Song traumatized me as a kid with my Dad singing it in a quartet and having the lead and having a little sister as well and hearing him sing "you can't be our daddy anymore".
Hard to express just how big a hit this was back when it came out, at least in the South. It got as much airplay on stations that played secular music as some country and rock "hit" offerings. I was only 11 at the time but was still amazed that a gospel song, even though a great sounding gospel song, could have so much impact on the overall music scene of the day. I think Naomi's heartfelt, soulful rendering of the song (even though written for a male voice) had a lot to do with it. Her's was a truly superb rendition. Thanks for the upload, W. Great memories.
It brings back good memories of Sunday morning getting ready for Church, when I was little in Georgia. My Granny would have Gospel Music turned up LOUD. LOL
Dennis it is a known fact that it takes just as much for a preacher to preach a sermon from the pulpit and for a singer to sing a song as it does for someone to put in 8 hours of hard manual labor.
Flying monkey, tell me your parents and grandparents are from the Caribbean. I grew up on these. As a child you get to know these songs word-to-word. Caribbean life and childhood. It was sweet.
Naomi , ......that prophetic sound, ....still scares me silly to this day. This is gospel in the classic tradition from the Sego bros and Naomi and rather an inspiring choice for an upload. Gospel has always been present in country music and innumerable artists have recorded/continue to record Faith-inspired albums.
Thanks for sharing and maybe you should cross the line more often. Gospel music is a forerunner of many a type of secular music, as I'm sure you must know. I remember this song well.
Memory's I grew up with them litterly. My father sang with them thru the 1960's. We all lived in Macon, Ga when we made that move to White House, Tenn so they could be near the recording studio.
I saw Sister Naomi in concert at few years ago ,....she is a very humble woman. And Still Brought the house down at lee college in Cleveland, tennesse E Wendy Bagwell & The sunli:ters,...And gold city,... now that was an evening.
after remarring, Naomi was blessed with another chart buster, but mainly a favorite and a must for the Gospel broadcaster entitled, "WAKE THE TOWN AND TEll " THE PEOPLE, IT WAS DONE LIVE AND AS A FORMER SYNDICATED PROGRAM I TELL YOU,...IT WAS PURE ENERGY., IF YOU CAN FIND IT YOU WILL LOVE IT. Yes… Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Only those who have been made a new creation in Christ Jesus and continue on with the Lord will be excepted. Help us Lord…
Interesting tidbit. When my mother-in-law was a teenager, she saw in a magazine/paper about submitting poem/song . This was it. Sadly it became the property of the agency that held the contest and she never received one ounce of recognition and yes, no royalties.
Naomi Sego (Reader) Passes Away - Centerville, GA (Nov. 4, 2017) - Naomi Sego Reader, 86, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, November 3, 2017. She was born in Enigma, Georgia to the late Jonathan Andrew and Nona Cook Easter. Naomi was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon D. Reader and her first husband, James Sego and a son, Ronnie Sego. She was a member of the Holiness Baptist Church in Enigma, Georgia.
In these days when gospel music is being hijacked by so-called “artists” ( 2020) seeking place and position in the various genre of gospel music, such as, Country” gospel; Gospel “rock;” Hillsong gospel; Evolution gospel; “Gospel rap;” “Contemporary” gospel, et al),
There is no money in singing the whole truth. Jesus spoke more about Hell than Heaven. I don’t know why preachers like Paul Washer never point this out.
Hell is never the subject in Christian music nowadays. In fact I have never heard of any other musician writing on Hell from the 1970s to this day in 2022. This is the only sermon that I wept and my hand could hardly hold the pages while reading. I don’t know how I made it through except by my Father’s grace. Naomi died November 3, 2017.
Where can I buy this.
She sounds remarkably like Vestal Goodman.
My mom wrote this song Sylvia Mort
Praise God… What was the inspiration or how did she come to write it?
For Real??!
Huh??? Rev. Hinkle Little wrote this song, not your mom. I sang with the Segos for a number of years.
