By jj Thompson model Helium has positive charges all around and some negative charges in a atom....Rutherford proved that most of the spaces are empty and positive charges are focused in the centre along the nucleus....Helium 2+ ions are used to determine this and found that more than half of the Helium particle or (alpha particle) pass through the gold atom only few has large scattering angle with less impact parameter.....so Helium ions are used to make the particles positively charge to repel the positive charges on the gold....no nucleus is involved here...
