This guy has ability beyond belief & has more melodic sensibility than the vast majority of technically advanced players!!! Greg Howe should DEFINITELY be known more than he is!!! I know he's popular among us guitarists, but somebody this good should be on the tips of everybody's tongues name wise!! Every time I see him I learn something new & he's definitely versatile as he's covered every style with ease!!!
I agree his talent is unquestionable, but songs are the name of the game and I wouldn't say he has the most memorable songs. I imagine him as content where he is at. I could be wrong.
@@bobsebring3377 Yes I agree too a point. Now the thing is that how can you express your feelings when you don't really understand the language in which you intend too express yourself in!? Their has too be a high level of understanding within the language so you can pull out the melodic information in the message as any given time!!! Greg Howe DEFINITELY understands this & NEVER does he ever sound like he's unsure of what he's trying too say!!! Frank Gambale is another great example of the perfect marriage of technical abilities, technique & expression (Kiesel must be the company that finds these players!!?) & in this you can include Larry Carlton,Roben Ford & Oz Noy etc... I love it all & pick up something new everytime I hear any musician break free from the musical prisons set by the styles in which they play!!!! I've noticed with Greg Howe that their's somewhat of a mixture of Larry Carlton,Frank Gambale,E.V.H & Alan Holdsworth!!! Check out his Pedalboard S.O.S video (That Pedal Show) & hear how great his playing is with no backing as it's just him & Daniel Steinhardt of The Gigrig in a hotel room trying out his newly repaired Pedalboard!!!
"Hi I'm Greg Howe and this is me just goofing around with different riffs and guitars. Thanks for watching." I've listen to Greg's stuff since the 80's and the Shrapnel Record days and he has grown as a player far more than most from that time.
I've been a fan of Greg's for 30 years, and this is the best I've ever heard him play. Flippin' jaw-dropping. He sounds like NO ONE else, and he's SO musical. I'd love to meet him, just to say "Thanks" for the endless enjoyment he's given me. And one million Thanks to Greg for posting this!
My jaw drops every time I run across one of his improvs on Facebook. Greg is still one of my favorite all time players, 30 years on, and I'm an 80's kid who discovered him back when his debut album came out. I fell in love with his style and listened to his stellar, underrated rock band Howe II endlessly in the early 90's...amazing stuff💜
I first met him when he played in "Duke" (which later became Howe II), Used to share a rehearsal place with them. He was always a great player, and a better person. First time I saw Him and Al was back in 1982, and they were doing VH better than VH (well, at least live versions of both) In the mid 80's, He used to warm up for gigs playing early Malmsteen stuff through a little Mini Marshall Stack. Greg told me about the whole Shrapnel thing as it was unfolding. He gave me a great heads up about what was going to be coming out, and who to look for in the coming months. He really is an awesome guy, and I miss the fact that he's not based here anymore.
Why this guy never got the fame he deserved always puzzled me.. so underrated. Who plays as clean as this dude seriously ? (especially back in the day..)
What I want to know is how 40 people would have the ignorance to give a thumbs down?? Greg is, and has been one of the best jazz fusion players for decades. He's in the same conversation with Allan Holdsworth. Thank you Greg for all you keep giving us.
I remember getting Greg’s first album on vinyl in the 80s. I’m surprised he didn’t get more attention. He deserves as much recognition as any of the other greats.
Amazing guitarist. The fingers of the right hand are incredibly fast, he combines all possible stunics perfectly. Thank you so much for the inspiration Greg.
Dude is.....and has been for years......a FREAKIN BEAST on the guitar. That "hard touch" 3 finger lead style is all his. Easily one of the top 10 players on earth.
it is 2018 and I am listening to the Greg Howe & Richie Kotzen Instrumental albums from ...1995 --1997 ...lifetime ago ....they are insane ... There is no best anything just music and skill experience represented on a musical device to express the whole human experience and what the brain comes up with in conjunction with the heart ... so to have guys like this back in the 90's writing instrumental tunes with so much groove , nastiness, devastating licks AND I MEAN DEVASTATING!!!!!!! neck snappers ..... i always wonder how many players out there are really trying to take and hold onto the music approaches from the 80's 90's from guitar and merging it with now .... listening to Greg Howe gives me a sense of young excitement likle a teenager to push hard on the guitar but hold a standard that they established .... discipline ....
I was talking to Greg back in the mid 80s shortly before he finalized going to Shrapnel. He was talking about going out to California again to finish everything up. He was pretty pumped up about it. He gave me a heads up about what was about to come out of Shrapnel, and who to keep an eye out for. He is a really nice guy, and wanted me to tell him what I thought about how his guitars were set up. They did play sooooo amazingly. Greg always wanting feedback from wherever he could get it. I miss him not being around here anymore, but I'm glad that things are working out for him.
@@stratoblaster3236 That's awesome man. I would have loved to see him rip live up close and in person. He has this really fluid movement when crossing the strings...his picking is so clean.
@@craigharrison5406 His playing looked effortless. I suppose having really long fingers didn't hurt him reaching points easily, and having his guitars play as easy as they did was a bonus too. I was sitting having a cold one with him, a few hours before "Duke" (later changed name to Howe II) was doing a show that evening. We were rehearsing down in the lower level that same evening, and came up and hung out with Greg, Al, and the rest of the guys. He had three of his guitars laid out on the table, and he asked me to tell him what I thought about how they felt. Those guitars were set up so perfectly... easy as butter. It was nice to talk shop with him. He's a great guy.
Still absolutely amazing! Been listening to almost everything from Greg. Still some of the tastiest stuff I ever heard. He's got that magical thing coming from improvising his solos, so nice phrasing and yes, it has the important spaces at the right places that make his phrases so tasteful and enjoyable...
Hey Greg, I was playing Jan Hammer licks on guitar in an allentown guitar shop round 1995. A voice behind me asked "hey, you like Billy Cobham" and we started chatting. After a few minutes I realized it was you. You gave me an invite to your place to Jam a few times. The brick building near easton/bethlehem. You were laughing at me carry my little Mesa up your flight of stairs...and my Pink HM . You were the most laid back and coolest person I ever met. Thanks for the great pointers you gave me. And hope you liked the games I brought you on CD-r and the copy of Cool Edit Pro . I remember you showed me your DAT setup and you used a boom box behind the monitors with U2 as a sound reference ! Good Times ! You're the best Greg !
