This was a really big deal in the UK when it came out. The video and lyrics were very controversial and the song and video were heavily edited on TV and radio. You had to stay up late to hear and see it unedited, and everyone was talking about it at school.
So... like the "official" version of Pearl Jam's "Jeremy" video, this "official" version of "Stan" cuts out the wrong parts of the story and makes the video make much less sense. I'm happy you went and found the uncensored version. It's much more impactful and interesting when you see and hear the whole thing. Back in the summer of 2000 when I was an assistant AAU basketball coach here in Los Angeles this song was super hot. That entire summer, whenever we went to a tournament up in Las Vegas or the Bay Area, the guys would be blasting this song in the team van. They played it on the way to every game and used it as their "hype song" to get ready for the game. I couldn't understand it because to me the song was very dark and depressing. But those guys loved it and they usually played great ball too.

I always liked Dido's vocals. And to think she got a lot of them from her mother's poems and material which she turned into music. This song really put things into perspective when a fan/stan goes too far...yikes. Eminem did an awesome job on this collab though!
Saw Enemin in concert with Dido years ago, early 2000s. Big group of us took a limo loaded with alchol and had the best time ever! It was an outdoor concert and we were like 8 rows back from the stage. Enemin was close to us it was crazy. They did this song and the whole crowd was singing and it was fucking awesome! I was a fan of Dido way before this collaboration. She has such a unique tone, very smooth. When I saw they mixed her song with rap I did not like it... later on once I had the chance to listen to this song and video entirely I started to like it and appreciate it.
This catapulted Dido’s career (she plays the girlfriend in this video). Should definitely check her out - “White Flag” and “Don’t Leave Home” are great. The song that’s sampled here is “Thank You”. Her sister is a member of the U.K. dance group, Faithless. Their song “Insomnia” was a global hit and was huge in the 90s and beyond.
This was a watershed moment in music.. at least in terms of today.. was like the rock movement but waaaaaaaat deeper as it was mych more societal rather than generation.. the album this came from was probably the best album ever made....
