      The animations were top notch and helped me massively to understand the topic. Thank you. How did you do them?

    • @petea8644
      @petea8644 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JCrashB +1 definitely interested in help with animation, there's a solid wealth of info on audio engineering, video compositing, etc... but animating seems to still be the wild west of media production, no standard workstation. Seems many production houses (like south park studios) have made their own in-house solutions, etc....
      I am betting Michael used an outsourced web-based solution, I have heard of web services that will even take a text document or an audio narration and create an animation to match the content, for pretty cheap, and very quickly.
      But they tend to have a certain "look" that is non-negotiable (cartooney, reminiscent of flash animation, and that look is all over youtube "infographic" type videos).
      Kinda makes you wonder where the difficulty lies, if those web services can be so efficient.

    There are various aspects to the "sound" in the terms of mixing, but polarity and phase issues were such topics which honestly speaking there's not a single person who could explain any easier and yet give even free to use tools for us to work upon and sharpen our skills. So proud to be a viewer right from the beginning Michael, its always a pleasure to see you come up with some really tough topics and explain us with utter simplicity. Wishing you good luck in your endeavours, and keep elevating the "sound" game a notch higher 😉

    Just wanted to add that when recording with multiple mics, use a measuring tape to make sure the mics are the same distance from the source. (for drums use the snare) great video as always man! Making it easy to understand!

    • @inthemix
      @inthemix  3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Excellent idea. I’d also further that by adding that even when you measure and place microphones correctly (which you really should if we are going for perfection!) sometimes microphones will interpret a signals polarity as the opposite. This can also happen with reversed wires too. So to add to Mark’s comment, measure and then double check!

    This is really helpful. Thank you for this video. One question though, should I be checking this on a whole mix or just on sounds that are recorded with multiple mics or sounds that sound too similar? I tried using the correlometer on a whole mix and it seems that some parts of my song especially in the pre-chorus where I have this specific bass, the correlometer says it has a bad phase but doesn't really sound bad to me, I'm new to producing so I don't really know much but as far as I can hear, it doesn't sound "wrong"? Should I try to fix it? The reason I'm asking is that, I maybe be not noticing something wrong because I don't know that it is wrong because I'm new and have an untrained ear. When I started learning about mixing and all these nitty gritty details, it kind of become so tiresome and it honestly takes away the fun. I felt like I just want to make music and focus in production but mixing is part of it and it seems there's no escape to it 😅. Anyways, would appreciate any advice. Thank you. I hope you have a nice day.

    To the OP or commenters, how would you go about addressing phase issues with two guitars?
    I'm trying to mix a grungey song where the rhythm and lead guitars are distorted and they're cancelling each other

  • @Quadr44t
    @Quadr44t 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yeah this stuff is super important. One thing I recently started doing is get my kick and sub-bass to have aligning phase (like so: drive.google.com/open?id=1CbpeVzpVE3biybWsEjywRa7FPqpqpSRs&authuser=kdvdploeg%40gmail.com&usp=drive_fs). Also when sub-bass is in a different key. I make sure the parts that overlap will still align and are in the same key as the kick. And then pitch the bass to the key of choice later.
    And I have to say that has a huge impact. Not only do the two sound more cohesive, it also opens up a lot of extra room in the mix. Just because you don't get weird phase behaviour during moments of overlap. Sidechaining is fun and all. But this stuff works so much better imo.
    Anyway. Nice video! Didn't know of those correlation monitoring tools!

    Great tutorial. Thanks! Just one question - does anyone know if FL Studio has an option to zoom into the samples? So really large zoom in?

    Thank you so much " In the mix" iv said it before and il say it again, Your information is invaluable and explained in such a way its "idiot proof". you've helped me for about 3 years and i continue to watch your videos and learn more every day. thank you so much!. i have a little request, please could you do a video on how to delay the end of vocals and/or sounds as i often find it difficult to delay just the end of a sound or it picks up the wrong frequency of the sample. If that makes sense =/.

      Thanks for the kind words, I’m glad you have stuck with me so long! For delaying the ends of words, have you tried using an automation clip to adjust the input of a delay plugin?

      @@inthemix thank you so much for your reply. Yes thanks to you iv become pretty adept at using automation clips. My problem comes when trying to get the last part of a word to delay. For example say the vocal was : " we have a long way to go" if I automate the delay i end up with "way to go, (way to go)" but I only want the "go" to echo off not the other sounds in the sample. I found the only way I can do it is by chopping out the individual word and delaying just that but it's so time consuming that way. Is there a way to isolate the one word at the end of a sample without chopping it up? Keep up your hard work in the mix =).
