As a native Persian and a student of "Comparative Literature", I wanted to mention a few points about the words:
It starts in an Iranian traditional music scale with a line by Saádi the 13th century Persian poet which goes as:
چه خیال ها گذر کرد و گذر نکرد خوابی Che khiaal haa gozar kard o gozar nakar khaabi
So much thoughts and illusions came upon me, but not even a moment of sleep
then the upbeat rhythm starts, which creates a melodic picture of that state of illusion and delirium, and the text is a random combination of different Persian classic poems, but with an emphasis on a poem by Mowlana Rumi, which contains the refrain:
صنما جفا رها کن Sanamaa! Jafaa Rahaa Kon
My Idolized Beloved! Stop tormenting me.

beautiful, thank you for sharing this. Can you direct me to more sources where i can learn more about persian literature? I'm iranian but brought up abroad and am really interested in learning more about my own culture and literature and teach my friends about it. Merci

@@suhailb.2955 Suhail Jaan, Can you speak, and more importantly, can you read Persian? If Yes, then I recommend original texts which are easier (Contemporary poets like Moshiri). If No, then there is little that I can help since I don't study Persian literature in English, but I am sure you can find good English books like "Recasting Persian poetry" by Dr.Karim Hakkak.

@@SohrabmosaheB yeah i can talk, read and write in persian. I was raised in dubai so it wasnt difficult to learn persian fluently, but i couldnt explore more about persian literature there

    • @SohrabmosaheB
      @SohrabmosaheB 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@suhailb.2955 in that case, as I said, I advise reading easier original texts, like Fereydoon Moshiri´s poetry or contemporary Novels. The book "سخن شیرین پارسی" is also a very good introductory book. You may be able to find a free pdf online, I am not sure though

I mixed front of house for him a few years ago. Such an incredible artist and performer. It was such a cool experience working with him to EQ for his different songs and sitars. Really kind and down to earth too! I’m glad people outside of the Persian community are discovering his talents.

Shirin & Farhad are symbols of love in Persian literature like Romeo & Juliette, they have a really nice love story with a sad ending.... and the charector of the song refers his lover as to Shirin. At a certain point the voice changes to an old man's voice, that's one of the beauties of this song, it illustrates that the boy singing this song has grown old and still he hasn't got to his lover and he is still alone.

This is my personal understanding as a Farsi speaker on this song. He is repeating the phrase "Sanama Jafaa Rahaa kon". It is asking "Sanam" which would refer to someone/something that you are interested to gain/reach/be-with. It is asking to "relieve the anguish". The pain is trying and wanting but not reaching and achieving. He specially mixes and matches regular and funny-sounding vocals to resemble different characters implying this suffering happens to everyone and we all are being set back by what we seek.

  • @fereshtehsabetian5781

I really enjoy your reactions man! Well the lyrics are hard to translate all the meanings, but the main phrase is like "my love, stop putting me into misery". Namjoo says if we gather all love stories and love songs, the extract of all of those is this phrase, and that is why he tries to repeat the phrase as it is spoken by many different people, in some other concert version he really went crazy with this variety :)) .

Sanamaa in Persian means the same as "baby" in English love songs but said by Shakespear in a classical poetic manner!! Namjoo is making fun of " babe" here! As you might have heard it too many times in English songs the same is true about Sanamaa and old Persian poems!! The same is true about "hair" that he sings about and makes fun of in a way that instead of laughing you want to cry! There is Mysticism in Iranian poetry and makes it difficult to understand so forget about the meaning of the songs but if you have a friend who knows English and Persian very well he me give you an idea what it is about!

The thing about his music is not only mixing different styles also kind of mockery going on. He is considered as revolutionary in Iranian music, because he used the traditional music which he is master of, and like the last moments when he did the (Chah Chah) but ending it like that! Sort of disrespecting the translations! Also in lyrics, he is singing a well known Saadi poem here. That for centuries was being sung in traditional way and meaningly has a weigh in Iranian minds. He is also defying that. Although I'm against his thoughts and beliefs, I enjoy some of his works and innovations. Traditional music is scared, he has defied that!
    Sanama means o the idol

It's good you are watchig a lot of Iranian music but hopefully you realise this is a complex issue. As an example, Namjoo in this song was singing a lyric, from a poet in 13th centurey, called Hafez, AND Shajarian in one of your programs was aaoo singing a poem from the same poet Hafez, and yet you thought that song was a prayer! here we go, the complexity of an ancient culture one needs to know a bit of historcial background about Iran.

I maybe wrong, but I believe No Iranian in their right mind, with a few exception, would ever listen to the type of music Mr. Namjoo performs. It's way too abstract to fit into the Iranian's variety of liking, unless of course you are seriously involved in the Art community, or are very trendy. I believe in Iran, after people hear these type of genre would for the most part say: "this only belongs to the international festivals, and for the consumption by the foreigners."
Mr. Namjoo is brilliant, but the Iranians want to be fed depth. Unlike Americans and Europeans they won't shake their head and body as they listen to the music that is not designed for dance, particularly when it involves the works of their greatly admired Poets, and writers.
Using the type of voice changing and animation that Mr. Namjoo adheres to when reciting works of Saddi or Rumi is considered in an artistic way, a sacrilege in Iran, in my opinion.

What is actually very disappointing to me is that I do want to translate what he says to my non-Iranian friends, but these lyrics are from traditional poetic Persian language, and thus, are not easily translatable. Even Iranians cannot extract the meaning from the poems, if they are not into literature. And if we translate the poems to everyday-spoken English, all these words of love turn into very cheesy, cheap teenager-favorite stuff.
    Appreciate what you are doing.
