    Hey Sofia, nice exercises you are posting! I sped up my look-up by using sun shadows in the picture and time of the day:
    1) We are near the equator, so shadows will look similar during the whole year.
    2) The post states that the picture was taken in the morning, the shadows are long, and looks like the picture was taken around 7AM. Shadows are therefore pointing straight west.
    3) We are looking at a right angle wrt the shadows, so we are looking south.
    4) The road we are looking at is a southbound main paved road leading into vegetation (most of the city is dry, vegetation lies mainly just near the river).

      Hi Luigi,
      That was also a great use of the information given in the tweet!
      I only realised I could have looked at the shadows to figure out the direction of the road after I recorded the video. I tend to go straight for the trees/features as they are often the most reliable pieces of information.
      It's great to see people's different approaches when solving the exercises.

    i am a beginner at osint, but when i first read the tweet, i realised immediately that as tweet mentions the morning, the sun rises roughly at the east, so judging by the shadows i concluded the road is going from north to south and people are directed to the south. that narrowed my search, but after that i was stuck, had to watch the walkthrough. downloaded google earth pro, what a nice tool! great video, now will proceed to easier exercises :))

    • @gralhix

      Using the information on the tweet and the shadows is a great strategy to start!
      I'm happy to hear you downloaded google earth pro. It's an amazing tool and very easy to learn.

      @RamBeuk 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      First exercise and found the solution like this too. But you're conclusion is the opposite. The tweet mentions the morning. So shadows would be cast towards the west. Which means the road is going from south to north. The tweet mentions newcomers, so they have to be coming in the city. Which means the picture is taken at the outskirts. That matches the picture. Then there's electricity poles going to the distance. From which I concluded there had to be a power plant to the south. I looked for power plant in Kiffa on Google Earth and almost immediately found the right location.
      Everyone gets to the solution differently I guess.

    This was fun! I found it mainly thanks to the shadow angle and the fact that the person said "newcomer", so I looked at which hotels would match. Thank you!

    Pretty hard one, spent around 30 mins or so to find it, and even after that I wasn't 100% sure, so I clicked this video to confirm. What helped me, aside from the obvious city name, was the description that said it's a morning photo, so the picture was taken from north pointing to south, since the shadow's projected from the left. Next, I brute forced all the locations in the city that were near a location with dense vegetation. This spot came up as the most plausible location.

  • @gclip9883
    @gclip9883 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I actually found it surprisingly quickly as a newbie. The tweet said that it was in the morning, so i looked up where the sun rises in the northern hemisphere. Together with the date (because the sun apparently rises either a bit north or south of east depending on if it is summer or winter), i could say with confidence that the picture was taken facing south. There was only one road that matched this direction, which was exactly where the location was. And the trees of course matched. But i wasn't 100% confident so i looked up your video to confirm it.
    Edit: i just saw that a lot of other people had the same exact idea.

      Yes, using the shadows is a great method in this case. Sometimes finding the correct place is not the hard bit. Providing evidence is where it may start getting harder because without proof, it's only a guess 😉

      @@gralhix Yeah, that's a great point. Also a newbie and I "found" it based on the shadows and vegetation, but didn't pinpoint any features. It was the mostly likely place from the set of places I considered, but I didn't have any evidence. Thanks for making these exercises and the thorough walkthroughs! Looking forward to working through these.

    The text also gives alot of information in this tweet. Newcomers for me felt like a pretty big hint that the people walking in isn't from the city. Maybe they came in trough some kind of transport? Maybe from the airport?
    So I also looked for the airport + trees. That made it easy as the airport is located 2km down the road the on the picture. There is usually textual clues also so often that can shorten down and give some hint, it can also lead you in the wrong direction if the text and picture dosn't match

    Thank you for this! I have only discovered your web page and this channel a few minutes ago and loved this exercise!! I found this one within minutes based on the sun, but also the phrase that mentions the city presents itself to newcomers, which to me meant it was located on a road that links the airport to the city.

    I went through all the right steps - google map, street view, google earth pro, but I missed the fact that the image was taken on the edge of the city and I didn’t realize that the colors on Google Earth meant there were trees there, but I should have known (although I am a beginner and haven’t really used Google Earth often). It’s those minute details.

      But with the sun coming from the left in the morning, it meant that the photographer was facing south? I also picked up morning a clue in this exercise but ended up losing at the southern road XD Are clues like that often taken in the analysis, or are they too unreliable?

    • @gralhix
      @gralhix  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Polideukes889 Yes, the photographer was facing South. The morning sun was rising in the East (as usual) and casting shadow on the buildings seen on the left.
      Occasionally figuring out the location of the sun and observing shadows helps when geolocating because you can see the direction of the road and narrow down the search by eliminating any road that runs on a different angle.
      Trees, buildings and tall structures are the best thing to look for at first though.

  • @Motorman2112

    I got it pretty close in 5 - 10 minutes. I was about 100 metres too far North because of some details I missed.
    Immediately I went to the city of Kiffa and looked for long straight roads. Not that helpful as it has a lot of those.
    Next I noticed that this is morning, which combined with the shadows tells me that we're looking South down a road that bears slightly West. That was easy enough to find on the map, but where are we along that road?
    I had a rough guess at how close we are to the bend, and couldn't find the green area on Google Earth. Eventually I realised that this is seasonal, so I changed the date and it appeared. Helpfully, it's a narrow strip of green along the river which basically confirms it's the right area.
    I still haven't quite been able to pin the exact spot on the road as there is no street view available to compare the buildings, and I cannot find images of them on google by the names they are labelled as on Earth.
    In hindsight, I could maybe have ID'd the vegetation area without an image from the correct season, by the dry river bed with the nearby bridge crossing it, but it would have taken much longer, if at all. I changed the date to get a different season, but missed that we were given the exact date and time. Maybe would have had better data if I'd set it to that. I also stuck with the assumption that all the text information is true/correct. I totally missed the tall tree behind the building.

    First ever OSINT exercise, and got it in under 10 min. Wasted most of that time with useless image recognition searches.
    One point you didn’t mention was that the Twitter post said it was taken in the morning, which meant left was East, which meant a road leading South out of town. After that it was easy, since there was only one such road. Edit: Just saw other posts saying the same thing, all guys. Probably a male vs female thinking thing.
    I really liked your tips about the time shifting in Google Earth Pro and looking for shadows of vertical objects. I’m going to work through the rest of your challenges now. I wonder, is there a place with hundreds of these kinds of challenges, so I could do them like a morning sudoku or crossword?

FWIW I'm a guy that solved it basically as shown in the video, considered the shadows thing but figured it was harder than just looking for bends near streams in the small number of paved roads
