I've now made a longer video on the various things to know and think about when learning vibrato. You can watch it here: th-cam.com/video/xaPeE1wmy4g/w-d-xo.html
indeed,i find this technique very good. thanks very much. and by adding to this technique the holding tight the fingerboard to a wall - this is the fastest learning viberato.
This doubles as a how to make your roommates hate you tutorial :p I am going to try this though. My teacher kinda threw me into vibrato, so I think I've learned some bad habits with it. Thanks for sharing!
also, is it normal to have a burning sensation in your forearm when practicing? when im practicing vibrato the burning is so intense that i have to stop playing after a few minutes. Its not painful, just a burn that inhibits my ability to accurately practice the vibrato.
No, any pain while playing indicates you are doing something wrong in either your chin rest/shoulder rest setup, or in how you are holding the instrument. Do you feel the pain only when practicing vibrato?
Yeah it could be that. If your arm, wrist, or hand is super tense then that could be causing the pain. If you're not holding the violin correctly with your chin, then it causes your hand to hold the neck more than it needs to, which makes vibrato and shifting hard. First make sure that the chin rest is tall enough for your neck. Then practice holding the instrument with just your chin and shoulder. Then watch your left hand to make sure you aren't tensing up.
Ok I found that I was holding the neck with too much pressure because I wasn't holding the violin with my chin correctly, but I fixed it! It is actually very comfortable now! I have another question, you said that 165 bpm is close to vibrato speed. I am having trouble finding what speed to do the vibrato at. I can do it at about 220 or more bpm if I really really try, but it doesn't sound as fast as other peoples, or as good. I was wondering what you think the bpm is for a normal vibrato, so I can practice at that speed.
I don't measure an actual vibrato, otherwise it'll drive you crazy. Just go for it. The slow metronome is only to make sure you are getting the right movement and even timing. Lookup violin solo music from the romantic era and watch how the masters do vibrato and try to match what they are doing. Typically vibrato for romantic pieces are as wide, warm, thick, and slow as it gets. Music from eras before then you might want a faster, brighter vibrato. But thinking about the colour of vibrato is more of an advanced thing. For now focus on just getting it right.
A Ayman It depends on the individual and how often you practice. For myself it took a few years because, at the time, I was going through a phase in my youth where I didn't practice every day. With that said, I have had a couple students get the hang of it after a few months. And they were able to accomplish it in a shorter amount of time because they practiced every day.
