If the defenders tries to stick to their man during a pick and roll then it gives the ball handler the space to either hit a 3 or if he is fast enough to run to the basket. Now some bigs would hedge or show to stop the drive or the 3, while the trailing defender goes under the pick, but this allows the ball handler to turn to the other side while the pick resets so now there is a wide open lane. If the trailing defender goes over then he is now stuck behind the ball handler, if the defending big goes level to stop the ball handler now the guy setting the pick has a wide open lob. Seriously if you are up against an elite guard, the pick and roll is a pick your poison situation for the defenders. This is why players like Bam, Draymond and Giannis are so awesome to have cause they are big players that can defend so many positions.
