    The secondary diaphragm housing on the Holley has a vacuum port sealed with an o-ring to the carb body, this port is internal and is routed to the venturi on the primary side, airflow causes vacuum to increase in the primary venturi enough to allow atmospheric pressure to override the spring in the secondary diaphragm housing, pushing the secondary throttle blades open.

      If that's a Pontiac 350 it should have more power. Maybe it's a GM 307.

      @@danielventura8073 No way... that is a Pontiac engine 100%. However it could be a 326.. especially considering it is a tempest with a 2 speed. The only V8's that were made for that car in 68 is a 326 or a 350. Unless GTO, then only the 400. But they are all the same blocks any many parts are interchangeable.

    • @whichgodofthousandsmeansno5306
      @whichgodofthousandsmeansno5306 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But regardless the main problem with that car is the 2 speed trans, They came with terrible gearing for power.. like a 2.60 ish. If you swap to a 3 speed auto and better gearing like a 3.23 that would wake it up some. This is a heavy car and with that trans is meant to just putt along.

    If the green on the Tempest was the same as on the GTO in '68 then it is called Verdoro Green. My friend had just returned from Vietnam and bought a brand new '68 GTO in that green. Just beautiful.

      Yes they are. I keep Cooper all-terrain's on my 2000 Tacoma 4x4. I've bought them several times over the years. No complaints here. I bought the truck new 21 yrs ago, and it still runs like new on all original engine & drive train.

      Not sure if Diamondback Tires out South Carolina are still in business, but they treated me WAAAAY better than Coker Tires did. They were also much less expensive. They made custom smooth-side redline tires to my spec for my ‘72 Luxury LeMans. They were 2/3 the price of off-the-shelf Coker’s. And they were made from high quality radials - essentially they lathed down the factory lettering, then did some kind of permanent heat bonding of the redline. I highly recommend them for classic-looking tires.

    Randy the hose running forward to behind the passenger side headlight is for the windshield washer reservoir. The reservoir attaches to the wheel well in the open space between the core support and the wheel well. Also the ideal set up for the vacuum advance should be ported vacuum. Intake vacuum for the transmission modulator valve and heater controls. You can buy a fitting that threads into the intake where the brake booster gets it's vacuum that has an additional port for intake vacuum as well as having your break booster.

    BOP didnt have powerglides they was the :The Super Turbine 300 (abbreviated ST-300) was a two-speed automatic transmission built by General Motors. It was used in various Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac models from 1964-1969.

      Wow, I just learned something new, thank you very much for sharing that.
      I’ve only experienced one 2-speed transmission in my lifetime and that was my dad’s old 67 C-10 that he owned in the early 80s. I knew that transmission was a 2-speed powerglide and I never knew GM had built any other 2-speed transmissions.
      I loved the way my dad’s powerglide shifted. Sure it wasn’t a speed demon but he lived in a pretty rural area without much traffic back then. I loved how it would go and go and go in 1st gear and then all the sudden when you least expected it shift to 2nd. I loved the wide gearing, I thought it was pretty cool.
      That’s interesting that Buick, Olds & Pontiac had their own transmissions although I guess that sort-of makes sense since they also had their own dedicated engines back in those days.

    • @whichgodofthousandsmeansno5306
      @whichgodofthousandsmeansno5306 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did not know that. I knew BOP had their own version of the turbo 350 and 400 I thought all GM 2 speeds were powerglides. Live and learn. Granted I have only owned GTOs so not familiar with anything but the 3 speed auto.

    • @hydroy1
      @hydroy1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Something else on the turbine 300 / 2 speeds , You can pull it , swap out a BOP Turbo 350 as a bolt in as the drive shaft yoke and shaft are the same but you might have to re drill the cross member bolt holes in the frame. Really great swap !.

      @@whichgodofthousandsmeansno5306 My 66 GTO came with a Turbine 300 two speed, column shift and bench seat ordered from the factory. Also my dads 65 Olds 442 had a 400 motor with a turbine 300 trans and a friends 65 Olds Vista Cruiser wagon was ordered with a 425 and a Turbine 300 as a trailer package. See there was no Turbo 400 trans until 66 ! Back then we could order what ever you wanted as the customer was KING ! That switch pitch Turbine 300 was a interesting idea that Cadillac put in a few turbo 400s later .

  • @rustyaxelrod
    @rustyaxelrod 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is how we all learned this stuff “back in the day”. By doing it. The adapter plate is required to put the square flange carbs on the spread bore intake. There is a spread bore Holly that will bolt up without the adapter. The only advantage to the Edelbrock carb is that it’s new. The Holly is a better carb and easier to tune. All the parts are available separately. There are only two types of vacuum available, manifold vacuum (below the throttle plates in the carb) it’s higher at idle and decreases when the throttle is opened, and ported vacuum (from above the throttle plates) it’s lower at idle and increases with RPM. There is no “rule” for which type to connect to the distributor. The timing advance operates differently from different manufacturers and even year model.
    I suspect the soggy acceleration is a tuning problem and the distributor is a good place to start. Put a timing light on her, you’ll want to see 10-12° at idle (base timing) and 32-34° all in by 3,500 RPM. Looking at the weights in the distributor, I think you find they are sticking or the springs are wrong. Tweaking the carb (too much to get into in a comment section) after the timing is sorted should make this car easily chirp the tires.
    I would consider getting the proper Q-jet carb. The car is worth it. Be aware there are several different CFM ratings and fuel inlet designs. You’ll want one specifically for a 350 Pontiac. If you’re used to Chevrolet stuff, everything on the Poncho mill is on the wrong side or backward Lol. Fuel pump, starter, distributor turns backward etc.
    Good luck, it’s a cool car even if it ain’t a goat.

    Randy, that open spacer is indeed hindering performance. Either get a four-hole carb adapter, or get the proper Quadrajet. That's why that spacer is there, to adapt the Holley/Edelbrock base to the Quadrajet intake manifold.
    By golly, I actually wondered if that car was originally a different color, and even suspected that it was green (although a light green). If it's that dark 7-up bottle green or the Verduro Green, I'd rather have the green than red. And I think it's a LeMANS, not a Tempest, since it's so well optioned. Also can't help but wonder if that's a 400 swapped in there, because of those chrome valve covers.

  • @jaysmith5084
    @jaysmith5084 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's the distributor that is at fault not the carburetor ! I had a 350 Pontiac engine and it would burn the tires all day long 😂 Check the vacuum advance as the diaphragm and there dries up and leaks also check the curve weights if the car sits for a long time they will rot in place and won't advance the timing . Get a timing light and a vacuum gauge and start checking it out . You'll be surprised at what you might find and switching the carb is fine with the plate because stock it's a spread bore and the adapter makes the square bore for aftermarket carbs . I think that car is at 8 degrees before top dead center btw and totally advance is 18-24 degrees . And you want it close to 20 lb of vacuum as well .

    Did you check to see if it's was getting full throttle. The factory cable on a 2 bbl and 4 bbl are different. I would have put a Q-jet it to get rid of that spacer.

    That spacer is blocking your intake ports, remove the spacer because its not made for the stock intake. Also, when you use the spacer you also need 2 gaskets.

    Ooh! My first ride was a 69 Lemans! What a car! Those cars hugged the road like no one would believe. It’s great to see someone doing this epic “GOAT”!
    This is like the Gibson Les Paul that you kick yourself for selling many years later. ;-)
    I can’t wait to see what you do with this classic muscle!

      He can only sell to another dealer. Wholesale license. Or Copart /IAA.

    If I had the money and didn't live so far away, I'd buy that Tempest in a minute. I wouldn't have any problem with it being a Cruiser.

    it's a combination of the 2 speed tranny,and the 350,possibly even a 326 2 barrel cammed engine,that's the reason for the sluggish acceleration.a GTO 400/turbo 400 would straighten that right out,it's a shame it's a clone,although it is in very nice overall condition..

    If I were you.... Make sure it States that its NOT A GTO when you sell it... Since you got scammed. You could have asked me..... Was President of a GTO Club for many years and still Moderate one of the largest Pontiac forums.. Car needs Springs along with the shocks... Your PCV should not be connected with the Power Brakes.
