    A few years ago we lost the split tailgate in the disco 5. This year, we lost it from the land cruiser 300. After deciding to upgrade my trusty ageing Touareg that has served my family faithfully over 12 years, I began researching and test-driving suitable replacements since the start of the year.
    After a few months of anticipation, I was finally able to take the 300 VX for a test drive a few weeks ago. I was impressed with the power, drive quality and, surprisingly, the appealing sound of the V6 engine. It certainly seemed to drive much better than the outgoing 200 series Sahara that I test drove a few weeks earlier.
    I was seriously tempted to lay my $2,500 deposit down there and then to secure my car for delivery some unknown time in the future… but there were some niggles that got me to reconsider. The niggles included:
    1. The rather cluttered, busy array of buttons and ‘stuff’ on the dashboard
    2. The cramped third row seats that are cumbersome to operate
    3. The synthetic rather than real leather, despite the salesman trying to convince me it was real leather (I accept synthetic is better for the environment but hey, you can’t beat the smell and feel of real leather!)
    4. The absence of the split tailgate, which I thought was a nice touch in the 200 series
    5. No electric tailgate
    6. No memory seating
    Individually these niggles aren’t that bad but when you add them up, along with the fact you can’t customise to add 1-2 bits, it proved for me to be a deal-breaker. I thought that shelling out $125k (inc ORC) for a car would’ve included at least an electric tailgate, but I was wrong.
    It was a shame that Toyota didn’t include some simple features such as electric tailgate or memory seating on the pricey VX model that seems to be standard for most other (and much cheaper) vehicles. What’s worse is that you have to pay $18k more to get them in the next level Sahara, as they aren’t even offered as an option.
    The day after I took the VX for a test drive, I took a slightly used Range Rover Vogue for a run, and boy what a difference a day makes! I’m now a proud new owner of a totally different class of vehicle that has all the features I was looking for and more… but that’s another story.

    My Sahara is parked in my garage for almost two weeks still learning new features. If you want to compare VX with Sahara, here are the features Sahara have VX don’t have: Power-folding 3rd row, heated and ventilated 2nd row outer seats, driver’s seat memory 3 memory settings, sequential turn signals (front and rear), chrome accented exterior door mirrors and door handles, power back door, leather accented seats, heated steering wheel, rear footwell illuminated entry lighting, cool box, driver and passenger seat back pockets hard backed, 14-speaker JBL premium audio, head-Up display and dual rear seat entertainment with (headphones not included). To be honesty the new Landcruiser is better than the older one: more power, more torque, it is quicker, beautiful design, technology and safety. Thank you, Paul. You have done excellent job on VX.

    Good review, but what’s up with Toyota’s trim level? This is vx? If you don’t say I thought it’s a gx, small wheels, no rear locker, can’t slide 2nd row so what’s the point having 3rd row? And 3rd row needs to be fold unfold manually, this is not family friendly. I probably keep waiting my prado vx.

  • @matthewfarrell317
    @matthewfarrell317 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    300 series looks nice as hell, price-wise going to stick with my Prado. The Kakadu has enough for what I need.
    Only two things, the 6-month service is fine, better to over service than under service, and it also catches those who offroad in small doses. Prado has a 6-month service and it's nothing. Second in terms of hydraulics in the steering and brakes. Glad Toyota made the sensible long term choice and did not go electric. It might be fine in a brand new car, but give it a decade, with wear and tear, and if you lose hydraulics you can still steer and brake the car safely (just with a ton of muscle). Toyota relies on the fact there will be a million 300 series putting around in a few decades.

    Our range toppers here in South Africa are the ZX and GR-S, available with the 3.3 V6 and 3.5 V6. Those are the only ones I would consider buying, but their prices are between R1 760 000ZAR and R1 850 000ZAR, which is between $160 000AUD and $170 000AUD, with the 3.5 V6 models being the more expensive ones. I would love a GR-S with the 3.5 V6, but I can't see myself ever paying that kind of money for one. I'm currently in the process of buying a Hilux Legend, it's very similar to the Hilux Rogue in Australia, and that's almost half the price of the cheapest 300 series we have available here, which is the GX-R for around R 1 285 000ZAR or around $118 000AUD. Just wish Toyota could hurry up and get some stock since I've been waiting just over 6 months for my Hilux, but apparently things are looking good for the end of this month.

With a 2019 Sahara 200, I’m going to give it a couple more years to see what the facelift model introduces across the range, but I think Toyota really missed the mark by not having the 2nd row fold flat to create a huge sleeping platform, and the loss of the tailgate will keep the aftermarket busy no doubt. Hi Paul, Another great review. I like what Toyota have done but agree that the VX should have a few more standard features thrown in, diff lock and definitely a power tail gate. I noticed that there was a considerable fluctuation on the oil gauge from idle to increasing revs. Seemed a bit odd, anyone else notice that? From the rear, it reminds me of the current Patrol. Be interesting to see how this new engine performs when run in and it's reliability. Cheers.

    • @ErzbergAdventures
      @ErzbergAdventures 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I saw that oil gauge movement. I'd say it's more to do with the oil moving rearwards in the sump with the initial acceleration. Then slowly creeping back to level.

    There are things like the entertainment unit that look like it is pasted on, not integrated. For such a huge vehicle that the third row is disappointing. Mechanically it sounds good, time will tell, but no diff lock at that price, unforgivable. The one thing missing that is one of the most useful things is the split tailgate. It is extremely handy. But most new vehicles omit it lately. Don't they listen to their consumers? Then there is no way that a brick-like shape will do 9 L p/100 km, maybe if it's downhill. But people who buy this, don't care much about fuel consumption. It's big, it's heavy and not streamlined.

      That is an ignorant comment. The Ram or Silverado are bigger utes and that's not what these vehicles are aimed at. Also no thanks for an American product vs the heritage of the Landcruiser. Also the re-sale value of these vehicles is the best of anything full stop. Do your research before spitting out a one dimensional American Tank vs a Family Touring Vehicle. They are world's apart. Exactly the reason one of Melbourne's biggest boat dealers has sold his Ram's and invested in the Landcruiser. Horses for courses and you aren't even comparing Apples with Apples.!
