Pretty sharp, Vic. You hit on a good one. We get bombarded with messages all the time from all over the map: "It's rigged and you don't stand a chance." "You're just one guy - what difference is your puny little opinion gonna make?" And on and on. The Daddy State needs us to feel alone and helpless. So they feed us bad information, fully intending to give us the convenient excuses Vic's talking about. We can deny them one small victory at a time by writing those letters, and chit-chatting with strangers, and building little communities - like this one, which isn't all that little. I click on Vic's link, and I'm reminded that I've got almost 35,000 neighbors here - and that's not nothing.
Our democratically elected republic is under siege by olicarchy, when most people don't clearly understand that an oligarch is a rich person who uses their wealth to influence politics. Citizens United has been very empowering for oligarchs. Voting for what the oligarchs allow us to choose from is but an empty shell of a true democracy. This has to be addressed. Voting when this is clearly the case can be tricky. Non big money backed candidates must be selected by the masses. We need to be together in this. This is for us (the non oligarchs) and for the power of democracy in our republic. Stop voting for those beholden to the ultra rich, but do vote for those who will represent our best interests.
True story: about 10-12 years ago, there was a ballot initiative...up to that point, one of the most expensive ones in the state. Money poured in from on of state. Since the out of state interests profiled the people like me, where I lived, as the most likely they could convince it was in our local best interest, we were bombarded with calls and ads. Also, door knockers and roving representatives at everything I attended that summer. The difference was that the people who were showing up in person and at my door were almost all volunteers who wanted to talk...against the measure. Volunteers and talking...at places where people gather....Most expensive ballot measure to that date...2/3rds voted against it...and in the areas where one side spent a lot of money and the other side talked to people, all people I of just the ones they figured would agree with them, over 80% voted against it. People meeting people where they are
Knowing people like that is frustrating and disheartening, have been trying with several since Trump came along to just get them to vote. They've bought into the "my vote doesn't count" and also avoid the slightest bit of political conversation. so remain unaware of what's being done or discussed until their social media buddies bring it up and often distort it or they hear it on the snippets of news they do watch, which never has the entire story of the effects.
Exactly. We know these things, and knowledge is power. We can’t just throw our hands up and say Oh well. I’m not saying that I have any brilliant ideas about what to do, but I’m doing what I can to put myself in the right places to create change where it needs to happen. I am involved with my local Democratic Party office, and I’m emailing, calling and writing to my representatives. It feels better to do what you can, rather than sitting and feeling lost. Hang in there, because you’re not alone! 💙🇺🇸💙
Several months ago I had lunch with my older brother who's a Vietnam vet, and he had gotten it into his head that because of Gaza, he was not going to vote Democrat anymore. In fact, he was even contemplating voting for rumpti. I told him I was gonna disown him. I expect he changed his mind. However, it wasn't more than a couple weeks later that he announced he was gonna take a trip to Vietnam, where he hadn't been since 68. He is not a young man, and he does have some War related disability But he does have a camera and a little bit of money. At Thanksgiving, I said remember everybody uncle Phil is not gonna be here for Christmas and his response was, he'll be celebrating TET. Frankly I don't believe he's coming back.
You said he was considering voting for trump. Does he not know that trump is supposedly pro Israel? So is Biden and almost all presidents because Israel is our ally in the Middle East. They were brutally attacked on October 7. Hamas started the war. And if that happened here, we would retaliate. Remember 911? But when it comes to Israel, they’re the exception right?
You are correct. They didn't go into the voting booth with people. The Supreme Court was yet another reason Democrats needed to win. Too many to count. Today I got an email requesting funds for home heating bills to help people unable to pay heating bills. The reason for the bill is because the federal government can't be counted on to use our tax money to help the poor. The poor either didn't vote or voted for Trump.
CU came about because Obama said he wouldn't use money they usually give both candidates to use. He was surging fast and Mitch saw that, and jumped in with CU, and here we are.
Apathy is the killer of action. The tasks needing to be done seem overwhelming and ultimately impossible. But the best way to counter apathy, is to do something, however small and seemingly pointless. Because action in itself is empowering and brings momentum.
Small donors to the Harris/Walz campaign showed what the power of people can do when motivated to contribute their hard earned dollars. They raised record-setting amounts of money for the campaign. Citizens United is unlikely to be overturned soon, but we, united as individuals for a just cause, can still make a difference.
We all have our own civic responsibility. We can also work for other changes, but bottom line is we all need to be an informed voter. If we can’t do that minimum amount of work to keep our country moving forward, we don’t have the right to complain.
100% true, however, those of us who do our own research and vote with intelligence are sadly in the minority. The last two generations don't seem to have that ability. For two Presidential election cycles we all thought the younger generation would stand up and vote for the right things. They either didn't vote at all or voted based on their desire to get rich. We all thought they cared about the environment, the economy, and social justice. Apparently not.
I think you just gave each person permission to take some personal peaceful responsibility to learn and to write ( appropriate representatives). I could be wrong but I really liked this video. Respectfully, thank you.
What's the link between Citizens United and Dobbs? As for money in politics, the Democrats raised and spent far more money than the Republicans and still lost congress and the presidency. How did that happen?
I entered a response to Vic's statements that was civil, fact based, non-violent, no swearing, etc... That was about two hours ago ... And now I look to see how it's doing, and it's been removed! ... This is what I'm talking about ... My opinion was not voted off, was it? It was removed on purpose by who? .... Be careful on TH-cam ... Something is very wrong; we are being channeled down specific roads of thought towards specific conclusions ... This is very wrong ... Shame on you Vic ... I thought better of you ...
When Thomas and Alito retire, I bet they will lose their rich ‘friends' who take them on expensive vacations!
And they will be replaced by Trump nominees
They become consultants. Revolving door.
No worries trumbfuk will replace them with the space laser lady and that unlicensed escort from Colorado.
Retire? The only way those vultures will retire is in a form-fitted pine box.
They should retire to prison
