    I used to build tons of snow huts as a kid, never from blocks since they would always cave in after a few days but rather just smushing up the walls one handful at a time like you would with clay into a dome. Those were way more durable and could survive a day of snow melting temperatures, becoming stronger each time as the melted snow slush would freeze into denser ice. The best one I ever built was due to a month perfect weather where the constant melting/freezing and me adding fresh snow on top turned the entire thing into a 20 inch thick solid ice dome. You could ride a sled down the side of it from the top and it didn't collapse until well into april. I was the coolest kid in the village, seems I peaked at 12 years old.

      Just Imagine Being Stuck In a SnowStorm Somwhere In the Most Harshest Place In Siberia where it’s Below Freezing 🥶Lets Just Say For Example -46 Degrees!!!? Sooo You Have 2 Options That We Learned From This Man’s “How To Video” You Either Sleep Without A Man Made Igloo With A Temp @ -46 Degrees That’s Not Including A Gust 💨 Of Wind Chill Blowing Constantly...Or Plan B Sleep Inside This Igloo AT 6 Degrees Fahrenheit Which Blocks Most Of The Wind 🌬 From Entering Thee MakeShift Igloo.... Doesn’t Plan B Sounds Like A 5🌟Trump Hotel Compare To Sleeping On SkidRow In NewYork City During Winter?lol A Bit Cozier Than -46 Below I Might Say!!! “Makes Sense My Friend?”

    I grew up on the Gulf of Mexico, and lived most of my life within 30 minutes of the Gulf, so not much snow to speak of :) However, I watch these videos because it is interesting, you do a very good job explaining what you are doing and why, and you have a calming voice. Another big plus is that you didn't add any annoying music to the video, thank you for that. I spent a year in Colorado and did a lot of camping. I have enjoyed camping my entire life. I think it would be fun to travel to an area where Igloos can be built and spend a few nights in one, hopefully with a friend who knows how to survive in the area :) Great videos, thank you!

    I watch your videos BECAUSE it doesn't snow where I am. I look forward to cooler weather 9 months out of the year, but this year it was 80F+ on Christmas day. Not twenty years ago it would be between 40-60F on Christmas and I've been grumbling about 2020 being The Year Without Winter, and threatening to move. Your videos restore my sanity. Thankn you so much! Liked, subbed & all the rest!

    One the subject of igloo's collapsing: I've built and slept in about 200 igloos over the years on mountaineering trips. A few were made with good "styrofoamy" snow, most were made with marginal or poor snow, IE, had icy or weak layers in the snow pack that yielded fragile or weak blocks. I've had blocks fall in while I was still building but never had one block fall in, let alone a complete section once the igloo was completed. I also used to worry about an igloo falling in on me but haven't thought about it for years. The key is finding wind blown snow. And, to make the most of marginal snow, having a really well designed snow saw. I used a double sided Wyoming or packer's saw like in the vid but long ago but have moved way beyond that. A well designed saw makes ALL the difference in the world in labor, quality and time.

    why does the Igloo not melt on the inside due to the temperature gradient?

    • @overthehilloutdoors6779
      @overthehilloutdoors6779  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The inner wall surface will melt a little if temperature inside the igloo gets above 32 for very long, but it usually refreezes when the temperature drops again - especially when the igloo is unoccupied. Melting and refreezing is a good thing because it tends to seal small air gaps and bond blocks together better.
