My husband is from Shanghai originally but he made me learn Mandarine before teaching me Shanghaineese so I am able to communicate properly with anyone I China. But because I'm around him all the time and listens to him speaking Shanghaineese with his family I've ended up speak mandarine with a shanghai accent haha.
I experienced in Shanghai when I spoke with my broken mandarin people often did not understood me. But when I exchanged all the "sh..." with "z...", as example saying for 是 instead of "shi" a "zi" people could immediately understand me. Even when I said "zisi" they understood "14". I'm still wondering if the difference is for Shanghainese ears so big or its just some kind of pride as we know from French. :-)
You guys talking of enjoying so much Chinese foods but do you realise even so you two do not seem to put on much extra weight. Thats because Chinese foods are relatively not that fatty, vegetables centric , very balance and tasty.
