    The St Petersburg Tournament of 1914 featured the joint winners of the 1914 All Russian Championship and players who had won at least one major tournament. There were the veterans Blackburne and Gunsberg, established masters such as Tarrasch, Bernstein, Janowski, Nimzowitsch, Alekhine and Marshall as well as the World Champion Lasker and his two most prominent rivals, Rubinstein and Capablanca.
    The tournament was divided into two sections. The first stage from the 21st April to the 6th of May was an all-play-all event with the first five finishers proceeding into the second stage which ran from the 10th to the 22nd of May. This second stage was a double round all-play-all with the scores from the preliminaries being carried over to the final.
    Prizes amounted to 1200, 800, 500, 300 and 200 Rubles. Each non-prizewinner received 20 Rubles for every game won and 10 Rubles for every drawn game.
    A brilliancy prize was being considered for Nimzowitsch vs Tarrasch, 1914 after the 5th round's finish, but more than 2 rounds later, it was awarded a 2nd brilliancy prize as the runner-up to the Capablanca vs O Bernstein, 1914 coup.
    The main source for this collection was the St. Petersburg 1914 International Chess Tournament book by Dr Siegbert Tarrasch. ISBN 0-939433-17-6.

    WAIT!? So Capablanca didn't study openings, told everyone to study endgames, and privately mastered the middle game, so the other two didn't matter?? The MAD LAD!!

      Capa did not said that he did not study openings..what he said is to study endgame first before anything else. So it means you will have to study opening and middlegame..

    His opposition must have been getting a little concerned about this dude from Cuba. It just seems he was a little better than anyone else in the world. Do you know if Capablanca was a good sport or did he rub it in when he crushed his opponents. The way he was staring down Lasker in those old photos made it appear like he was the baddest dude on the planet and he knew it. Kinda like Magnus today. Would be interesting if you could comment on his reputation among his peers. Although, chess GMs by nature, are just classy professionals.

    I don’t know if this comparison will make sense with what Fischer said about the endgame versus middle game but it is from the comic strip xkcd.com.
    A hacker said he was awesome because he installed a Trojan into some popular software and got root access when the user downloaded it.
    A better hacker said he was better because he hacked the software company and installed a root kit on the original source code.
    A better hacker said he was better because he hacked the disk drive manufacturer and installed a root kit on the hard drive platters.
    And the winning hacker said he hacked the Big Bang, installing a rootkit in the rocks where they got the magnetic material from which they made the hard drives.
    I think even the guy who just won the most games at the end can still claim to be pretty talented. And I bet capablanca was still pretty handy at the endgame.

    Why is the Rui Lopez so common?

    • @brawnstein
      @brawnstein 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It is the most basic and least complex opening , specially for lower rated players who can easily blunder in a complex opening like King's Gambit , Sicilian , Petrov , French , etc.

      I believe it's because it is one of the most principled openings. When you play 1.e4 you open the most possibilities for developing pieces. Then, by playing 2.Nf3 you develop a piece with a tempo, attacking the undefended pawn on e5. And then, by playing 3.Bb5 you are developing a piece to the furthest square available, gaining the most space possible, and also threatening to double black's pawns (if you're willing to give up the bishop pair), and you're also already ready to castle and put your king in a safer square on move 4.
      Anyway, if you think about the principles like "capture pawns toward the center", "gain space in the center", "develop pieces with tempo", "king safety", etc., the Ruy Lopez just seems to agree with them a lot.
      But what do I know? I'm just a 1200 player :p

      Because it's very easy to play as it follows chess principles and white gets clear and stable advantage without allowing much counterplay. One of those opening where White had more winning% (30% and black only 20%) , and if you compare this with Bc4 it's 32% for white 26% for black. You can see the difference

      It should also be pointed out that in 1914 the so called "hypermodern" openings (like the king's indian defense or the gruenfeld) were not a thing. 1.d4 always meant Queens Gambit Declined or Tarrasch defense, so when somebody did not want to play against one of those they just played 1.e4

      @@brawnstein Cannot agree at all. Especialy with "least complex". It can be very complex, if players want it. There are so many examples of complex Ruy Lopez games that it's really hard to choose one. But if anyone wants, you can take a look in that famous game between Kasparov and Karpov when Kasparov made a number of sacrifices and then crushed Karpov's defences.
      My answer why it's so common would be that it's very rich opening for both sides. Both white and black could play successfully either on king's or queen's side. This may sound common, but take other opening, e.g., French. It's a very rare occasion that you'll get a serious game as black if you decide to play it on king's side. I've seen it at the lower levels but usually with little success, since it's much more natural to play the French on queen's side as black. Anyway, back to Ruy Lopez. Both players can choose to go for open or closed positions. Again, in some openings it's one side (e.g., white) which decides on how the game will look like. I think these are the reasons why Ruy Lopez has been played at all levels for so many years.
      Myself, I've played Ruy Lopez as white for many years and was quite successful at it. Tried to play it as black and liked it, but again, white can choose not to play this opening and play something else, e.g., Italian game or Scotch, or four knights. Since I like to choose my own openings, I usually play French (was my single response to e4 for a long time), or Sicilian (that's what I play mostly these days).

    At 3:08 why couldn’t Capablanca play cxd2+ before playing Qxf6 winning a pawn?

    • @VR471
      @VR471 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because he wanted to ruin Alekhine 's pawn structure. Cxd2+ only helps white clear open the d file.

      @@santiagorodriguez2940 Magnus is better in endgame and even in middlegame, the thing is Caruana used engine preparations in classical time format and still couldn't win 1 out of 12, in blitz Carlsen showed who's the best ;)

    • @santiagorodriguez2940
      @santiagorodriguez2940 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Tengo25 I used Caruana as an example of a player who is just at his strenght level. Magnus is very good at squeezing water from a stone in endgame positions that are completely equal against strong GMs like Topalov or Fedoseev, but not against Top 10 players like Caruana or Ding Liren (Except for some rare blunder maybe, if there was one)
      Since Alekhine here was a top 10 just as Capablanca it is not fair to say that Capablanca was not as good as magnus in the endgame just by looking at this position. That's why I made the comparison between Alekhine and Caruana. I was not thinking on the 2018 world championship specifically
