New Radials and Signature 9 Vertical Antenna Up and Ready for Action

  • Today, I made some new radials and moved the Signature 9 antenna from its temporary tilt-over mast to its new home on the ground post. Slight tune required on some of the ham radio bands required due to the different ground conditions (100m wire vs 350m of wire radials for Signature 12.4). I will cover that in the user guide, don't worry about it. But what do you think? Looks nice, eh? Callum.

    That Signature 9 looks awesome. Might be a good idea to drill a 4-5mm hole in the ground plate, just behind the SO239, to fit a little stake through into the ground to eliminate "turning forces" on the antenna in high wind? (No guy lines to prevent it from spinning on planted stay-up pole). Continuous lefty-righty turning forces in high winds might cause unnecessary strain on coax and all radial wire connections. I watched the video the 1st time for the antenna. The 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th time for the music 🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠

    Very nice. If I have to put a vertical in a corner of the yard and can only run the radials out in one direction (90*), will the majority of the propagation be in the direction of the radials or the opposite direction?

    • @DXCommanderHQ
      @DXCommanderHQ  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It will still be omni-directional however rather than MORE gain in the direction of the radials, there will be some loss where there are none. So to answer your qwuestion, sort of yes - but there won't be a null. I dproved this many years ago with a 180 degrees of radials and promptly crossed the Atlantic on 80m - which was the "wrong" way :)

    A couple of plastic stakes either side of the SO239 socket (mounting bracket) may stop the antenna from rotating around the PVC pipe in the ground.

    • @DXCommanderHQ
      @DXCommanderHQ  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, the coax tends to stop it.. Then as the antenna settles on the ground, it'll stop. But sure, why not.

In such a case, it'd be good to know whether I'd need to add guy wires to the Sig 9 to account for that? (Does it come with guy lines?)

      Yes, ,we have a replacement policy for all poles. On 18m, we price them one-at-a-time. Basically I do them individually and come up with an individual plan to assist customer depending on what their issue was. We have replaced only 2. Both times, customers won't mind me saying that they f*k'd up! We do both PayPal and Credit cards now too.

      @patrickbuick5459 ปีที่แล้ว

      @DXCommander I meant the 9m poles, but yes, those ground posts, too.
      I'm working out a build for a "portable" tilt-over pole base for my 12.4 with latch(es). So I just place the base, run 3-4 low guys down, some smallish stakes (or big ones for grounding), slide the Signature onto the pole, and raise to "click." Then guy the Signature. The base raises the Signature up a foot or two ( a meter?) out of the snow and muck, and braids connect the ground plate to the radial wires at the base. I may use my DX Engineering ground plate or just fab a sheet of aluminum. This would work for the 18m Signature as well.

    Callum can I use the mounting post for the signature 9 on a Classic multiband +80? I feel I need the extra support - I live a half block off Lake Michigan, and it can be windy at times.

    • @DXCommanderHQ
      @DXCommanderHQ  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      OK, a) it's not a good fit on the classic and b) assuming it's guyed, the post won't do anything. I understand about the wind and sure, it can be disconcerting to watch your antenna blow about however in the main, it'll just blow about.

    • @DXCommanderHQ
      @DXCommanderHQ  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, that's a huge story. Only because I think most "wind survivablility" numbers are guessed - and I'm a man of fact. So I don't know. I would guess it won't be the wind but what would knock most things off would be gusts and frequency of those gusts.. I'll maybe make a video about this.. But one of the reasons you can't get insurance on a fence post - same issue..

    I have a question for those of you who are experienced in HAM radio. I recently retired from the fire service, and I still have my Kenwood NX-5200-K2 VHF radio that I used for communicating with my fire repeaters. I am working on getting my Tech and General license, and I was wondering if I would be able to use this HT for HAM radio as my first rig. I know it has a range of 136-175MHz but I am not certain if this radio is reprogrammable for the layman.

    Good day Callum, Have you ever thought about elevating one of your antennas say 3 meters off the ground? so you could have elevated radials coming off your ground plate. I have been watching videos by SteppIR and Waltersstanton th-cam.com/video/enb7pcv9ZBI/w-d-xo.html that are reporting massive gains by elevating their radials. I thought if anyone knows if this is worth while it would be the DXCommander. All the best to you and thanks for all the great videos.
