Why does the factory radio almost always have better AM & FM reception than an aftermarket radio using the same factory antenna? Are the tuners in aftermarket radios that bad?

I have this problem with my 2012 Chevy Sonic. FM, CD player, Bluetooth work great, yet no reception on the AM band.
Er - this doesn't tell you ANYTHING about HOW to tell whether you need a new antenna. So it's just an advertisement, right?
