Kal came in like a hurricane, beat Dave Johns for the Mr America, won the Universe over Mentzer, then Weider ended his reign. Now a professional road racer
That was one of the most precise routines ever, he showed us only his strengths, had the crowd wanting more he bowed and left the stage. I was there and never forgot his awesome presentation.

Great Guy. I see him live at the Profi World Cup 1981 in Essen with Sergio Oliva, Serge Nubret, Robby Robinson and other big Bodybuiders from the golden Time of Bodybuilding. 👍
Old School bodybuilding……he was one of the very best. My dad clearly remembers reading an article that Kal wrote for one of the bodybuilding magazines in 1977
Kal, along with Jeff king, and Matt Mendenhall were never given their just dues , however pro bb's of that Era will say these names AND SAY THEY WERE FANTASTIC AS WELL AS any pro at that time don't forget Rory, and Belknap , those body's were up there with the pros of that Era
Youre Way off; he had an excellent upper body and poorly developed thighs and calves. He was still able to win some big shows because of his upper body but at the same time he should've done a better job bringing them into balance
@@cheese033 Back in the day, they didn't want the Carrot shaped fat girl thighs so evident today. The funny thing is, apart from the disproportional inner thigh development today, the rest of the front of the thighs were as good or better in the old timers.
1982? Wow, I never even heard he went on to the NABBA after he did the crucifixion pose at the IFFB Olympia when he felt cheated. He had personality and a sense of humor too. No wonder they were calling him Arnold's replacement after Arnold retired. He had no weaknesses.
Kalman is one of the greats of a looooooon list of athletes whose career Gang of Dirt Old Men a.k.a. Weiders & and now Manions destroyed for petty reasons !
Supposedly Szkalak injured his lower back early in his career which prevented him from doing heavy back squats. His leg development hindered better placement in contests.
The imbalance is such that I don't believe that at all; he could've done other things. The main thing is I don't think he worked them very hard and didn't care
Kalman had an awesome physique. I remember him most for his crucifixion pose when he got robbed of a major title. I think it may have been the Olympia?
@@wataboutya9310 We can agree to disagree. At the 78 Olympia even if you disagree with Zane winning Calendar, Coe,.Padilla , Roger Walker and Dennis Tinnerino had much leg development and overall more balanced physiques than Szkalak. There were even bodybuilders who only competed at a regional level that had better legs than Kal. I think Kal's legs got a bit better a few years after but they still did not match his incredible chest and biceps.
I have never understood the claim put forth by various people starting with that Gelfo woman of Mentzer's that Kalman was only half a bodybuilder because he had 'no legs'. Okay, so he wasn't Tom Platz, but neither was anyone in that era who wasn't named Tom Platz. Compared to his competitors, Szkalak had pretty good legs. He certainly did here.
No, even by the lower standards then he was mediocre and that's on him. There's no way he was working them as hard as his upper body and the imbalance is glaring. However, sometimes his upper body was so good he could still win
I never knew that and I grew up in Pennsville which is the first exit when coming off the Del Mem Br on the Jersey side. I was in high school when Kal was at the peak of his career and he was one of my favorites.
Kal had a great physique, BUT when people talk about Arnold they always think his 1975 "Pumping Iron" physique wad his best condition. He was bigger and very defined in 1973 and he was huge, but not quite as cut, in 1974. Arnold looked good but was considerably downsized in 1975.
looks like 2 different people from the waist up, and the waist down. where are the legs? the abs? pretty bad when your forearms are bigger than your calves.
Agreed his upper body especially his chest, arms was incredible but thighs way too small for his upper body and calves even proportionally smaller. Mike Mentzer should have beat him at the 1977 world's in Nimes, France
I'm not going to address this specifically to any of the ignoramuses admiring Kal's 'symmetry' because it may be that time of the month for them. It's astonishing how ignorant the bodybuilding fan base is. Even people like me who aren't fans know the difference between symmetry and proportion. Example: Arnold Schwarzenegger had terrible symmetry, not because his legs were too small for his upper body, but because his left bicep looked nothing like his right bicep. Symmetry should not even be a consideration in bodybuilding since close to 100% of obese and emaciated people exhibit perfect symmetry. Arnold is the only well known bodybuilder I can think of offhand who had less than perfect symmetry. Even decrepit elderly people possess perfect symmetry. It's not much of an accomplishment.
Schwarzenegger's asymmetry wasn't very noticeable; kals imbalance was very noticeable and that was on him he clearly didn't work hard on his lower body
40 years ago and pisses all over today's pros, underrated then also, never got the recognition he deserved.
This was A M A Z I N G ! Man... how we've lost our ways with this sport, both physique, staging and showmanship :'(

Kal was in the mags when i was a teen, always admired his physique.

I only saw him in magazines and then 2-3 times on the net. Darn... Why did he not win Mr. Olympia? He had it all in my eyes...
The days when your "relaxed front pose" wasn't a 3/4 completed front Double Biceps pose.

I cant find a lagging bodypart on this guy anywhere, maybe a little less water in the hams but other than that what an incredible physique.
His body flows with Synergy
Symmetry in general is not the greatest. 90% biceps. The AAU Mr. America the year before, Dale Adrian, had much better symmetry.
I would say hamstrings and inner thighs, but anyway, his physique was out of this world..
